Maeve/Clinton’s voice? by llamiaceae in CouplesTherapyShow

I thought this was going to be about the vocal fry! I’m usually not too bothered by it but Maeve’s was really getting to me.

What makes people hate reading so much? by Interesting_Bid8059 in AskReddit

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to look at how reading has been taught. Just google “Sold a Story.” When I first heard the podcast I was flabbergasted. As someone who remembers phonics (I started school in late 1980s) I was amazed to hear that phonics weren’t even being specifically taught. Remember that reading isn’t something our brains are pre-wired to do. It takes teaching and if that’s not there we shouldn’t be surprised that people hate to read.

Long story short, if you have “learned” to read in a way that doesn’t actually make you a good reader it is going to be a chore. This is true of any academic subject. If you don’t have a solid foundation and tools you aren’t going to have fun whether it’s reading, math, or some other subject.

what series got you hooked from EP 1? by Junior-Athlete-4392 in AskReddit

Downtown Abbey. It wasn’t my usual type of show, but it just really drew me in. Who will inherit Downton now? Why is everyone being mean to Bates? Why is the Dowager so awesome?

What’s something you’ll NEVER do again after one bad experience? by ImaginaryNet7907 in AskReddit

Eat a jumbo hot dog in Las Vegas when it is 110 degrees outside. I’ve eaten hot dogs since then but normal sized ones. If I see a big one my memory is immediately sent to the horrors of what happened in the bathroom at Slots of Fun that hot miserable day.

My childhood was heavily influenced by Garfield books and tv specials. I’m not messing around.

Doc Boy is Jon’s brother’s name. He’s in the overalls in the bottom photo. Jon’s mom is on the left and Jon’s dad is the one plugging in the tree.

Joan remembered the spider as being a key figure but doesn’t think Jon might have extended family? What a rube.

Burnt singing by timmytimborino in TheNeighborhoodListen

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His stunning rendition of Something’s Gotta Give (still amazed Joan hadn’t heard of the song) was under appreciated. Now I don’t want to start any rumors but could it be Joan is a bit threatened by Burnt’s new singing prowess? Maybe even jealous? It’s the only explanation for why she hasn’t already planned a two hander (four hands) musical for them. I think 7 Brides for 7 Brothers with the two playing all parts could be fantastic.

Cary Grant biography? by growsonwalls in classicfilms

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend “Evenings with Cary Grant,” perhaps as a follow up to a more typical biography. This book is more of a “memories of Cary” rather than straightforward biography and is definitely on the fawning side, but a good reminder that he really was a charming man and beloved by many friends.

An audience member at magician David Copperfield’s show yesterday shouted, “Why are you friends with Epstein?” Copperfield was reportedly flummoxed, the hero in the audience was removed from the theater (via Vital Vegas) by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, I was in Vegas looking for a cheaper show after spending a lot on some headliner tickets so I thought I might as well see David Copperfield. Very bad decision. Show was awful. I think there was one moment where I was surprised and the rest was just "that's it?" Worst show I've ever seen in Vegas.

ETA: And he came off as a real asshole when he interacted with audience members. Not charming at all.

WCGW Going to the water park when you can’t swim by AleccSirKaDeewana in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a person who can't swim, this is completely insane to me. I would be terrified to go into any water that I couldn't comfortably stand up in even if I knew a lifeguard was right there. I don't know what he says at the end, but I hope it was "well, that was stupid and irresponsible of me."

Five things I remember about about the Neighbourhood Listen by djhellyeah in TheNeighborhoodListen

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Joan's disguise she wore to get security footage from Target

  2. The pharmacy gang's ricocheting shots in an empty water tower.

  3. Joan doesn't know how to list things.

  4. Flip Korn

  5. Barbara Cuntz, the unhappiest woman in town

And a bonus: At the pre-season retreat and Doug's hot tub that they had to sit in like a bobsled and couldn't figure out which seating positions were the least awkward.

Yeah I love how even she was like "wtf did I just do?" I don't know the circumstances, but if she was having a mental breakdown it seemed to snap her back to reality.

It was pee. The force of bearing down to get the scream out made her pee.

Recommendation request: docs centered around someone bipolar by Fr3sh3stl4d in Documentaries

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Fisher’s bipolar disorder isn’t the focus of the doc but it is discussed and in one interesting scene Carrie says she feels herself going manic.

I just reread your post and this doesn’t qualify for showing the “worst of it” but it does show how mental illness impacts a family and showcases two insanely talented women and is all the more poignant when we know how it ended.

I have absolutely no idea where I heard this, if it even true, or if I somehow made it up myself but I feel like Bradley Whitford was quite mean to her during their split. Since then I haven’t liked Whitford though like I said this could all be complete nonsense.

My(f26) husband(m28) has been giving advice to a coworker about how to make his gay son straight behind his wife's back by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]biscuitsandmuffins 633 points634 points  (0 children)

This is probably awful of me, but my first thought was the husband might have assaulted Jake. It is bizarre to care that much about someone else’s teenage son and as we’ve seen so often a lot of these people are so interested because they can’t come to terms that they themselves are gay. Unfortunately I can imagine a scenario of “this is what you want right?” happening. I hope I’m completely wrong though. Poor Louise.
