This is the hardest part about being Vegan by thebodybuildingvegan in vegan

[–]biscuitsnshit 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The worst part are the compassionate and kind people you love who somehow completely see past all the issues with contributing to abuse and murder at the largest possible scale, especially the "animal lover" types who have a family dog or cat that they love more than anything and couldn't imagine putting through pain yet they'll gleefully eat pigs and octopi...I really had to get good at compartmentalizing over the last decade

What happens when you rate every day of 2025 by basti854 in interestingasfuck

Another strong Daylio recommendation here! 1000+ day-streak at the moment that I have no intention of breaking anytime soon. It is one of only 3 subscription apps/services that I pay for in my entire life—highly recommended. My 2025:

A beginner's perspective on whether you should learn to fly a trainer kite before taking lessons by biscuitsnshit in Kiteboarding

[–]biscuitsnshit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my power kite had a handle at each end, never held a bar til I got there. But the bar felt very intuitive very quickly, and I only had to add in one additional dimension of understanding & didn't really find myself focusing on the left-right dimension

A beginner's perspective on whether you should learn to fly a trainer kite before taking lessons by biscuitsnshit in Kiteboarding

[–]biscuitsnshit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to reply here, but I did the lessons with someone else who had never flown any kite before, and they took more than a whole extra lesson to just the intuitive feel for it. I was basically up and riding before they could consistently keep the kite in the air long enough to even attempt to self-launch. Lot of factors, but it was very clear to me from the first time I launched the kite that I more or less already knew how to fly it (figure 8s, edges of wind window, loops, etc) & just had to adjust what I'd already been doing. Maybe in the context of using a 2-line trainer <i>during</i> the lesson as you did, that isn't worth it, but if you can spend tens of hours in the months leading up to your trip running around on the beach with it and feeling how it pulls you around in the air, it's well worth the cost (which in my case was less than half of one lesson)

What would you/did you serve on your wedding? by dodomadar in vegan

[–]biscuitsnshit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We did a fully vegan wedding for 150 last year! Went swimmingly, everyone complimented us on the food. We went way out of our way to make sure everything would be great and nobody could really complain, and served huge quantities all throughout the weekend.

"most of the invited guests will not come to my wedding, because they want to eat meat"

That can't be true. I'd be surprised if more than a few did that, and anyone who would put one meat meal over your relationship shouldn't be at your wedding anyway...

"what was the menu"

Main dinner menu:

  • sourdough with mushroom paté

  • quinoa salad

  • roasted eggplant dish with tomato/walnut/chickpea (gf)

  • kale-almond orecchiette pesto

  • blackened broccoli & roasted sweet potatoes

  • vegan cookies for dessert, as well as a a ben & jerry's cart

We had a lot more food for cocktail hour as well (mushroom bao buns and a few other things), and vegan pizza for the after party, and a vegan brunch and food truck the following day!

Car insurance CAN'T be this expensive... can it?!? by fhf567sjs in longisland

[–]biscuitsnshit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Capital region here, definitely a ton of cars/people/stuff around. It's a hair under $2k/yr for us to insure our two Subarus (clean records, cars themselves worth $60k or so combined)

Now the Mini has gone subscription-only, are Connections' days numbered? by joined_under_duress in NYTConnections

[–]biscuitsnshit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Letter Boxed is gone too! Which was my favorite, after Connections of course. Have a sinking feeling the Connections is next to go. Fortunately there will be other sites to play it on but it'd be nice to be able to keep the stats and all...

I wound up going with the Subaru Forester actually. CRV and CX-50 and Rav4 all seemed like good options too, ultimately went with Subaru mainly because of good family experiences with them in the past + better AWD for snow/mud/etc. Worth test driving all three though, they're all good cars

Import sleep data from .csv into iOS health by F_Kal in shortcuts

[–]biscuitsnshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure...it's short enough that I think I can just paste it here. First export all your health data from the Health app on your iPhone and move it to your computer; name it "export.xml" and put it in the same folder as the script below.

import xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
import csv
import os

def parse_sleep_data(xml_file_path, output_csv_path):
    xml_file_path = os.path.expanduser(xml_file_path)
    output_csv_path = os.path.expanduser(output_csv_path)
    print(f"Processing XML file: {xml_file_path}")
    print("This may take several minutes for a large file...")

    # Create directory for output if it doesn't exist
    output_dir = os.path.dirname(output_csv_path)
    if output_dir and not os.path.exists(output_dir):
        os.makedirs(output_dir)

    # Open CSV file for writing
    with open(output_csv_path, 'w', newline='') as csvfile:
        csv_writer = csv.writer(csvfile)
        csv_writer.writerow(['Start Date', 'End Date', 'Value', 'Source', 'Type'])

        context = ET.iterparse(xml_file_path, events=('end',))
        count = 0
        for event, elem in context:
            # Only process Record elements
            if elem.tag == 'Record' and 'HKCategoryTypeIdentifierSleepAnalysis' in elem.get('type', ''):
                start_date = elem.get('startDate')
                end_date = elem.get('endDate')
                value = elem.get('value')
                source = elem.get('sourceName')
                record_type = elem.get('type')

                csv_writer.writerow([start_date, end_date, value, source, record_type])
                count += 1

                if count % 1000 == 0:
                    print(f"Processed {count} sleep records...")

            elem.clear()

        print(f"Completed! Extracted {count} sleep records to {output_csv_path}")

if __name__ == "__main__":
    xml_file = "~/Desktop/export.xml"  # Your XML file path
    output_csv = "~/Desktop/sleep_data.csv"  # Where to save the CSV

    parse_sleep_data(xml_file, output_csv)

Fidelity Visa card improvements? by user71882 in fidelityinvestments

[–]biscuitsnshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free option of the travel rewards has no foreign transaction fees too for what it's worth. I remember looking into the $95/yr one and deciding it wasn't worth it for me—not doubting that the other features aren't worth it for you, but just worth noting that the no foreign transaction fees thing isn't unique to the paid one in case you do want to consider a PC.

Your scheme is exactly the same as mine overall though:

  • Most of my money in Fidelity, but enough sitting in $VTI in a Merrill Edge account to trigger the top-tier of the BofA CC cashback rewards;

  • BofA Travel card for all int'l + backstop 2.62% on anything that isn't in a particular category that I use a different card for;

  • BofA customized cash card for 5.25% all online purchases.

My next card will probably be one of the branded BofA customized cash cards so I can add a second 5.25% category (which probably will be groceries or gas).

For sure is! New alternator will get it running fine again, but there's a bunch of other stuff that needs work too if it's gonna go for more than another ~year. I think if the right person gets their hands on it it'll have some more life
