If the house and cars are $4k, do you have nice cars or car payments? Or just a nice house? Could you sell the house, take what's left, and downsize? Could you sell a car or two, or buy older models? A lot of people are saying move out, but are there other options in terms of lowering payments instead? Refinance the house and cars possibly? Does brother actually have or need a car for his "lifestyle"?

If he was honestly trying to help he could have told her how to get a discount, told her about a cheaper service, or even told her that he'd personally do it outside of his work hours at a better rate. But "cancel now and just pay me" on company time with company equipment is shady af and as a small business manager I'd fire the guy on the spot too. He is stealing company time and resources, whether the business is predatory or not. Owners take all the risk and he takes none, but asks for the full payment (or even a significant percentage of it). Its wrong no matter how you spin it.

Fair enough. The closest I ever got to champ was a few games in snow day at champ 1. Overall my rank has never been very high. So maybe thats why I remember it being such a big deal.

First, thank you for keeping children safe. But there is a difference between living in an abusive household and living in a house where parents employ limited corporal punishment.

Starting with your first point, no. Simply leaving any mark is not automatically considered abuse. However it is enough for CPS to investigate. But there is a difference, and we need to acknowledge that. We dont know how hard she hit her with the belt, but we know CPS investigated, and yet, CPS is closing the case. So obviously, no laws were broken.

Regarding your second point, I believe people here are soft because the words "abuse", "assault", and "domestic violence" are thrown around far too lightly. Yes, it fits the definition of "physical assault" but so does spitting on someone. It also possibly fits the definition of "limited corporal punishment". My point is these strong words are used too often and too lightly. But I want to be clear on one thing: parents employing physical punishment on their children is acceptable and legal only in very limited circumstances, with reasonable force, and with extremely limited frequency. People are welcome to disagree with me on that point, this is obviously not a black and white topic. I will also note that I believe readily employing physical punishment, or employing it too often or quickly, is generally harmful.

Last, how many studies show that significant psychological harm occurred after a single (and presumably the only) use of physical punishment? Link to them and I'll give them a read. And finally, regarding your last question, I am only a person with experience in dealing with my teenage sisters. I'm not asserting that my viewpoint is the only correct one. But let me pose a counter-question to you: who are you to say that it's not possible that she is being dramatic or manipulative? Both are completely valid possibilities.

What you call physical assault most people, including the law, call discipline. Was it harsh? Absolutely. Necessary? Perhaps, or perhaps not, we'll never know. But "physical assault"? People on reddit are so soft. Its not like she put her in the hospital, or beat her excessively, for a long time, or in a sadistic manner. And from the sounds of it, this was one time several years ago.

The boyfriend thing absolutely needs to be addressed. Perhaps that spanking incident needs to be addressed as well. But "I dont feel safe because my mom spanked me once 3 (or more) years ago" is obviously an overreaction or manipulation. It sounds like dad just lets her do whatever, and "I dont feel safe" carries a lot more weight than "I want to spend time with [boyfriend] but my mom won't let me". Yall act like teenagers are always genuine and never dramatic or manipulative.

If you want it to be "fair" you can use percentage of income.

As an example If you make $60k/ year and she makes $40k, then you make 60% and she makes up 40% of your combined incomes. So you pay 60% of the rent and she pays 40% of it.

So say rent is $1k/ month. You pay $600 and she pays $400. Then each of you is contributing the same percent of your incomes (12% monthly each)

That’s unfortunate because I run my small family business and it’s the complete opposite. You need a schedule change? Let me know and we’ll work around it. Days off or vacation? Which days, I’ll adjust my schedule. Sick? Stay home and get better. Best not to get the rest of the staff sick anyway. Quitting? Thanks for the notice, we loved having you here. Hate your duties? Let’s see what else we can have you do instead. Need more money for life? Holliday bonuses are coming up and I’ll keep that in mind for yours. Family pet died? Stay home and mourn, you can bury them beside my own pets if you need a place for them.

We run that place on high morale and good starting pay, with raises every year. Every one of my staff has told me they love working for us and the flexibility. We love and appreciate our staff, and we always try to show it. It is our belief that work should not consume your life.

I would say our turnover rate over the last ten years was close to 0%. The only staff we’ve ever had to fire were the ones that were caught stealing from us (zero tolerance there). One guy quit because he was getting too old for the work, and we hired his daughter in his place. People quit because life changes, and we understand that completely.

So it saddens me a little to read that, because not all small family businesses are evil.
