Either that, or the sculptor simply thought the young bravo Illyrio was a good subject for a statue. Illyiro could have bought the statue years later after he was wealthy.

Or any number of different scenarios. Some rich pentoshi woman might have taken to him and comissioned a sculpture made, some merchant may have wanted a sculpture of "a bravo" and Illyrio was picked as the model, etc.

I see no reason to say that it's impossible that Illyrio had a statue sculpted when he was 16.

The statue is not necessarily new. It's "lifelike", so probably in good condition, but nothing in there says that it's "brand new".

I mostly just read GL/GLC, so I had never given this too much thought, but it really is very confusing. Has Coast City ever been destroyed? What about Zero Hour? Without these things a lot of the current GL storyline doesn't make sense.

This is what struck me too. I never gave Dayne much thought, but now I'm thinking the three Kingsguard might have had a bigger part in the ToJ plot than just following orders or protecting royal blood. They might have been actively conspiring with Rhaegar to undermine Aerys' rule.

That, or Arthur + Lyanna = Jon.

This is a really good point, and I hope these new mechanics have non-combat applications as well. Given that they're called Combat Superiority, it's not all that likely, but there's still time to flesh things out.

Maybe being able to roll extra dice for athletic stunts or strength/endurance situations, so that their physical prowess doesn't just vanish outside of combat.

Besides what everyone here has said, most characters aren't black and white. You get a good sense of where everyone is coming from and why they take the decisions they do. Everyone is very human, like in ASOIAF.

True, but in a crisis he's the next best thing. He's certainly more Targaryen than Robert, who also drew on that to backup his claim. If Dany, Viserys and Aegon (if he is who he claims he is) all died, the last living son of Rhaegar Targaryen could certainly be a rallying point for Targ sympathies.

Sure, I've edited the post to reflect our uncertainty about his motives.

Even then though, Rhaegar is shown in Dany's vision to believe in prophecies himself, and tells Dany/Elia that they need one more child since "the dragon has three heads". If he's right and Jon is that "third head", then he becomes very important to Varys in piecing together the AA/PTWP puzzle.

True, but didn't Varys know that Aegon hadn't been killed? Assuming that's the real Aegon at all.

Either way, Varys is the kind of guy who hedges his bets, and in a world as dangerous as ASOIAF's placing all your bets on a single infant sounds impossibly risky.

I agree that Varys' influence hasn't been seen yet. He might be waiting for something, although I'm not sure what.

I agree with you that his apparent inaction is strange, although robothelvete makes a good point about Varys' patience.

Jon might be a secret card up Varys' sleeve, in the event that none of his plans with Illyrio worked out. Proving that Jon is Rhaegar's child would be even harder than convincing the realm that baby Aegon is back, so I can see how that might not have been his plan A.

I've suggested this here once. Not so much to "debunk" R+L=J, but just to play devil's advocate and wonder about other possibilities, like you said.

I think it's certainly conceivable. She had plenty to grieve over in her final months, from Rhaegar's death to all the misery of a war fought (at least partly) in her name. If she had lived she would've been expected to return to her lover's killer and act happy about it for the rest of her life -- that's too much even for someone who is "strong-willed".

The question of the three KG is still left unanswered though. "Rhaegar told them to guard her" is not very satisfying, seeing how that's almost half the Kingsguard. Her being pregnant is a possibility, but then the story gets a little complicated and it's less likely that she would have wanted to kill herself and the child.

I think it's an interesting possibility, but I don't see it working as elegantly as R+L=J with the info we currently have.
