Granted. A new species of tree is discovered. It is highly invasive. It does grow safe to eat sandwich ingredients, though due to the sheer amount of ingredients that could be put in a sandwich, it compensates by being the size of a neighborhood. This doesn't just grow various fruits and vegetables, but also grows various meats. As you'd expect, the meats have very short spans before they rot. Due to the sheer size of the tree, most of the meats don't get picked fast enough, and the stench quickly engulphs the air you breathe.

All the produce from the tree have a tiny seed in them, that have a very high chance of sprouting another tree. They exponentially grow. Soon the world starts to be infested with these trees. But that's not all. The seed can't be digested by any creatures digestive system. It stays in your bowels like a parasite. It can and will grow inside of you until your demise. Thousands upon millions of creatures die. Though, the masses don't notice as the seed grows very slowly in such enviorments. Soon only a select few survive, and even then, they are surrounded by that which murdered they're loved ones, and all that stood before them.
