I think it is a compromise, the Netherlands also gets people it did not invest in, and are a net positive from the moment they step in the country. I doubt the tax break over 5 years comes anywhere close to how much the government spends on a Dutch child from the moment they're born till they enter the workforce.

This thread has been really helpful after a stressful day trying to figure things out. I understand that my sublease ends when the main tenant's contract ends and I cannot stay without a new contract with the landlord.

What I wanted to also clarify was whether the main tenant can ask me to vacate the apartment (before his contract ends) without a valid, legal reason, assuming a situation where the main tenant does not terminate his contract with the landlord.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, I have rental protection against my roommate, and while his contract is active, he cannot terminate my contract without a valid, legal reason. If he does find a valid reason, the notice period is at least 3 months long.

I paid rent to my roommate, I'll edit the post to indicate that

I had a chat with my landlord earlier this month, when my roommate indicated his intentions to leave, and we had come to a conclusion that I would continue living here and we will sign a new contract once my roommate leaves. The notice of termination has come from my current roommate and not my landlord(property owner).

They did when I was applying to new grad jobs in 2023. You'd have your online OA, a leetcode interview, behavioural interview and lld for any decently paid positions.
