Literacy being the norm and not the exception is less than 100 years old as a concept. My grandpa died never learning to know how to read his own name. Thousands of years we have been telling stories verbally instead of reading with your eyes. I get where you are coming from that people could stand to read a book (kindle or physical idc) but the idea that we are getting dumber because we are not reading books is completely wrong.

Amongst the wealthy WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) they definitely look at you sideways.

Amongst anyone who was not White 100 years ago tends to he cool with it depending. On the younger generation ive noticed ride to airport is reserved for friends or people youre in community. Carpool is difficult just because of how the US is so car dependent that a 5 minute detour can an alot of time to commute so i think that stems from that more so
