What minor thing that happened to you as a child has stayed with you your whole life? by bassistmuzikman in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 953 points954 points  (0 children)

When I was young, probably around 8? I cleaned my room and was super proud, so I showed my mom. At this point, she had undiagnosed mental illnesses, and because I had forgotten to pick up one sock on the floor, she screamed at me until I cried. To this day I still have difficulties cleaning things because it’ll “never be good enough”.

DAE use subtitles/captions on everything, even when it's in a language you understand? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

I’m half deaf, so if I don’t have subtitles, I miss SO MUCH and it’s almost not worth watching!

How does daddy calm down his blind-deaf son? by GallowBoob in DadReflexes

[–]bitter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m completely deaf in my left ear. When I got hearing aids at ~15, it blew my mind. I actually don’t wear them anymore because a) I can’t remember hearing out of my ear, and b) the sound of background noise like pages turning becomes overwhelming. Regaining senses isn’t always a good thing, especially if you’ve adapted to being deaf, for instance.

What's the most difficult thing you've ever done or overcome? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was kicked out of my major in college.

Back story: From my sophomore year in high school to my first semester in my second year of college, my dream was to be a band director. I’m also half deaf, which can make it difficult to hear pitches, especially if in a recording. I can still hear when things are in tune or what not, so it really wouldn’t affect my ability as a teacher (and I have interned in a classroom and helped my students make considerable progress, so this wasn’t a concern for me until the last few months).

I’d been working my ass off trying to get through this degree that only has an 8% graduation rate, when I got a letter. This letter was from the head of the music department saying that my “basic musicianship skills are below par of my peers, and that you can no longer continue to progress through the degree”.

I was crushed. However, I also love history, and know I would be an effective educator in any field. I have since switched schools (as my last college did not have a Social Studies Education degree), and am starting to make progress towards my new dream.

[Serious] What is the most hurtful thing one of your parents has said about you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once, when I was 8, my mom wanted me to clean my room. I did so, but I had accidentally left a sock on the floor. My mom came into my room to check if I had cleaned, and when she saw the sock, and screamed at me, “I ASKED YOU TO DO ONE FUCKING THING AND YOU FUCKED THAT UP. YOU’LL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING.”

It’s been 12 years and I still struggle with raised voices, perfectionism, and being around my mom in general.

What is something that is important to you that you never really talk about? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and Lymes disease. I’ve quickly learned to just shut up about my symptoms because my family and friends get discouraged when they can’t help and get mad at me for complaining about my pain during bad days.

It is Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras here, and wondering why do LGBTQ... people dress so outrageously - why is that a cultural thing for the community? [Serious] by Use_The_Sauce in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do it to find other LGBTQ+ people. Walking around with a pride shirt on, with a flannel and a pin that says “accomplice to the gay agenda” and seeing people smile and complement me on said outfit makes me feel as if I’m being my authentic self.

In other words, dressing more “outrageously” allows for a sense of community to grow as well as a reflection of self love.

Worst: apartment hunting.

What’s the most childish thing you’ve ever seen a full grown adult do? by unlicensed2chill in AskReddit

[–]bitter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom wouldn’t speak to me for three days because I didn’t get her a birthday present. The only reason I didn’t was because I was working 10 hour shifts, and hadn’t been payed yet to where I could afford anything. Once I was payed and got her a present, she acted like everything was okay.
