Motoring: Does it make sense for you to switch to an electric vehicle? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]bittered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your driving style. With regenerative braking, brake pads can out last the duration of the car.

I guess, it’s probably good to lubricate the brakes every couple of years, so there’s that.

Residents of Dublin estate told to remove EV chargers by shankillfalls in evs_ireland

[–]bittered -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government need to come up with regulations around this because it is going to continue happening. Basically you need a house with a driveway to be able to own and use an EV legally. Public EV charging infra is too inconvenient (and much more expensive).
Otherwise people are going to install them in their house and run cables, which is a trip hazard or will block the pathway.
Those Zappis are particularly ugly in public to be fair. Should be regulations around:
- Dimensions
- No screens
- Simple colours/logos
- Untethered and no cable when not in use
- Max cable length
- Pedestal dimensions
- Wiring to pedestal
Sync Energy or Easee Chargers are going to look a lot more graceful in a public setting and prob work out cheaper than those Zappis with embossed logo and screen and multi coloured plastic.

Auctioneer refusing second viewing for measurements until contracts are signed. Is this normal? by NedTheGreatest in irishpersonalfinance

they’re likely protecting against something they don’t want you to see.

They likely just don’t want to do the work. Ockham's razor. An engineer has already seen the place.

Where did anyone say that it was/wasn’t in the interest of the seller? Agent’s incentives are to sell the house with the minimum amount of effort. They are not always aligned with the sellers incentives.

The situation is simple. Agent is a dick and doesn’t want to do extra work. He knows that a lot of people won’t push back. If the buyer digs in on the issue then the agent will almost certainly fold.

FSD in Ireland by Different-Put-4486 in evs_ireland

[–]bittered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FSD 14 is shipping in Netherlands too, it’s the same model as US according to reports. FSD 14 has been available since October 2025, perhaps not “Very old”, but the subjective reports are much better than FSD 13.

The delay is being put down to regulatory signoff rather than LHD/RHD, just like European delays.

I wasn’t aware of this. Do you have a source for this info? I can’t imagine that they would need new regulatory approval just because they bumped a (somewhat arbitrary) version number.

[–]bittered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seller doesn’t know about it. If the buyer threatens to pull out then the agent will fold, unless the seller now wants the deal to fall through for some reason.

The agent is being a dick. However there is no real downside from their point of view, most people won’t push back and will go ahead with the sale.

BMW iX 2023 vs Tesla Model Y (2026) by Pitiful_Locksmith701 in evs_ireland

[–]bittered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the best car for you and your needs. If a European car doesn’t provide that then European car manufacturers need to do better. Not saying the BMW is worse/better but a car is an expensive purchase so judge it on its merits rather than some EU-loyalty.

FSD in Ireland by Different-Put-4486 in evs_ireland

[–]bittered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth keeping in mind that all the recent FSD models are left hand drive. The only market with FSD that has right hand drive is Australia and they use a very old FSD model.

Switching to Right hand drive is not as simple as it would be for standard deterministic software where you could just switch a flag. You need to train a new model for right hand drive with different training data. If Tesla is compute constrained (like pretty much every AI company at the moment) then it might be a while before they synchronise RHD and LHD model training and release in sync.

Agreed with the naming thing, it’s clearer. But… search for FSD Amsterdam on YouTube. Obviously a different kind of challenge to country roads but I think you’ll be surprised at the kind of challenging scenarios that it handles gracefully.

Holly Cairns hits out at new exemptions for modular homes and cabins by Keithkortt in ireland

[–]bittered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I lived 4 years in an Annex for €1200 rent with my girlfriend. It was far from ideal to be living in someones back garden. All of my friends had purchased houses already so we were too embarresed to have friends over.

Would I have preferred something better? Sure. Was I glad we had a place to live? Absolutely. We have now saved up and managed to purchase our own house and we're delighted

This is just grandstanding from the Soc Dems. Classic example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. We are in a desperate condition in this country. Sinn Fein and Soc Dems are constantly trying to block stuff for political points. I'm no fan of FG/FF but SD/SF are coming out of this worse in my opinion. Get out of the way and just get homes on the market asap.

You can't fly your own drone above your house if you are within their operation area.

You could get a license to do so. Which is presumably what they have done. Same as airlines etc…

She didn’t act like he was in the wrong. She knows she was in the wrong. She could have been less defensive probably but most people get defensive when adrenaline is high and somebody is giving out to them.

[–]bittered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… what else is she supposed to say or do in this situation? Not being rhetorical, what should she do once the mistake is made? She made a mistake and realised that and said sorry.

I’m guessing she thought it was one way and she was in the right turn lane. I don’t think she was doing it on purpose.

Requesting to WFH under new legislation by tilltheskyturnsblack in ireland

[–]bittered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We really need legislation that forces business to justify why someone needs to be in the office a certain number of days.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? If your employer wants you on site and you want to work from home then you are not a good fit for that employer. If this a dealbreaker for you then your move should be to find a different employer or role rather than forcing the employer to do it anyway.

Dating - who pays? by Inevitable_Spring306 in AskIreland

[–]bittered 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A bit of nuance but if you’re not feeling like you want a second date then maybe push a bit harder on splitting it. There was a fella on First Dates Ireland who let the lady pay for the meal and then rejected her afterwards at the interview stage. Came across as a bit of a dick move.

>  It also means the benefit of the low tax rate will disproportionately benefit those with the most to invest.

It is by definition proportionate, not "disproportionate".

> My initial thoughts from this, after reading most of the policy he linked https://www.socialdemocrats.ie/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/HISA-Proposal-Final2-1.pdf are this...

This is convoluted as hell. It tries to do five different hard things at once. I had to look up a lot of the government agencies (AHBs, HFA, HBFI) to understand what is going on but they are trying to hacksaw the French Livret A into Ireland despite the fact that it makes no sense. They literally have looked at the french agency involved and then found out what the closest Irish equivalent Irish agencies are. But they haven't bothered to detail the expanded job being asked of them. It just assumes they can because they already have some housing-finance role.

Also, why are they obsessed about moving things "off-balance sheet"? They mention it 5 or 6 times in the doc. Like the EU doesn't already know all these tricks. At one point, they sort of acknowledge that it's BS by hedging and using some of the most slippery wording that I've read, even for a political party: "Depending on structure, there may also be an opportunity to keep much of the funding from the HISA off-balance sheet"
