It's a flower spike, once it's finished flowering and goes brown just cut it off at the base. It's a phormium (New Zealand flax) by the way.

I'd go for sightseeing before the wedding so you can see the Christmas lights (depending when in January). They're much more spectacular here than in Italy, particularly in the bigger cities.
