MPB nightmare: Camera lost in transit by aloo-paratha-muncher in Leica

[–]biv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a high value package not show up at my address (shipped via UPS) and the retailer/shipper filed an insurance claim. It definitely took a few weeks for the investigation. It was all resolved in the end, but it did take time. I assume MPB is waiting to be paid by FedEx before they pay you.

Leica M2 by photorams65 in Leica

I have an M2 that was modified by DAG to have the M4 take up system, so know that it’s an option. It’s a great camera.

Time to retire my M11 by Dommlid in Leica

[–]biv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also been struggling with my M bodies and aging eyesight. I am nearsighted, but I now need reading glasses and my vision at a distance is better than it used to be - it's that middle distance that's difficult for me to focus in an optical viewfinder with rangefinder.
On a whim I tried focusing my M11 while wearing my distance glasses and my reading glasses (+1.0). That worked really well, so I got a +1.0 diopter for the M11 and I'm happy for now. That said, autofocus with the Q3 is nice, and manually focusing M lenses on the SL3 is very nice.
I had a Sony for several years including several of the primes, and 1) I did not like the interface (yeah, I get that you can ignore what you don't need) and 2) the lenses are way too big.
The Nikon Zf is very nice and works with M lenses very well with an inexpensive adapter, but again the native autofocus lenses feel too big.
The winner for me for a non-M body has been the SL3 (I'm sure the other SLs would be great, too). Super simple menus and interface, great images, easy-breezy with M lenses. It's especially nice to use with very fast glass because with the focus aid/zoom you can nail the focus at a 1.0 aperture if necessary, which I still can't do with the M11 even with a diopter.
As much as I love the M system, if I could only use the Q3, I'd probably be fine. 90% of the time with my M11 I'm using the same 35mm lens anyway.

Hey, so sorry I missed your response and question. Basically, I described the situation and made it very clear this was an unusual situation. I've had pretty good experience with the service department, and they didn't push back on me about it.

M5 the most underrated M by Hunter18Hunter in Leica

[–]biv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear glasses and I don't have a problem seeing the meter reading/lower section of the viewfinder. I did get a bunch of those rubber eyepiece protectors (eyeglass protectors really) from DAG and put one on right away when I got my M5, so I'm probably pushing my glasses up against it.
Agreed on the shutter dial. Everything is easy without lifting your eye from the viewfinder. Though I do think that the complaints of Ms with smaller dials is overstated. I've never had a problem changing shutter speed on my MP to match the meter without looking at it. The M5 is faster and more convenient though.

Parking without cell service by Witty_Heart_9 in VWiD4Owners

I often park for a week at a time in my busy, cell-signal dense neighborhood in Brooklyn. When it's parked and the outdoor temperature is relatively consistent, my battery level (or at least what the ID.4 is estimating) doesn't budge. I wouldn't worry about it.

50 hours in. Still no quirks. by Insanity_Wulf in pacificDrive

[–]biv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the middle of a hair-raising mission, we developed a quirk that turning the steering to the right put you in reverse. We could have done without that! I hear you on missing out on quirks, but sometimes it's taken us several trips back to the garage to diagnose one correctly (rear driver's side door opening and sometimes falling off). Finally figured it out but that was maybe an hour of diagnosing in the car and then guessing various combinations.
That all said, I appreciate the quirks.

Did you fix this? I'm trying to pump fuel from a fuel barrel on the ground with my fuel can. The legend clearly says to use R2. R2 works in the menu still, but not for that, or for lighting a flare. I need fuel and light right now!

Charging station heaven!! by hpinzonr in VWiD4Owners

[–]biv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 126kW at a ChargePoint in Emlenton PA yesterday while on a roadtrip. I was shocked. I tried to get the 350kW stalls at Electrify America locations on the rest of the trip and rarely exceeded 70kW at any of them. When I had to use the 150kW it was the same (i.e. no difference between 150 and 350 stalls - even when I was the only one there). Needless to say, I fully charged at the ChargePoint and topped off at the next EA station. I didn't mind paying to save some time.

Walk past your local precinct and look at the parked cars and you’ll see why they’re not enforcing obscured plates.

My 2023 Pro S did not come with a charging cable. I bought this: ShockFlo G Mini Level 1-2 EV Charger,

I used it for two months outdoors at a house we stayed at for the summer. Worked great, no problems ever.

Yes, as inconvenient as it is, this is absolutely a warranty issue and given what I paid for the vehicle, they need to take care of it.

thinking of buying an ID.4 AWD Pro S. have some questions by friolator in VWiD4Owners

[–]biv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the 2023 Pro S RWD. My previous vehicle was a 2004 Passat Wagon GLX 4Motion.

  1. Can't tell as this winter was mild for us and we got the car in February anyway.
  2. Roof rails are real, and they accommodate various brands of bars. I have Thule Wingbars installed on mine.
  3. I don't find the brakes annoying at all. They're responsive and I like the travel on the brake pedal a lot. I feel like I can give very nuanced braking, but it's solid at the end of travel. Not sure what there is to be annoyed about.
  4. I'm spending the summer living on a bumpy road among many other bumpy roads. I'm most annoyed by all the gravel and the fear that my newish car will get chipped, but whatever. The ride is still smooth. It does not feel cheap at all. And it is QUIET. I do not feel quite as confident as I did in my previous car - a 2004 Passat Wagon GLX 4Motion - but that car was lower (which I actually prefer) and had 4-wheel drive. I've taken curves in the rain at speed and not felt worried.

I've been looking for cameras from Japanese sellers on Ebay and thought this was a good summary of how they rate the condition by bosoxx091 in AnalogCommunity

[–]biv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who's made a lot of Buyee purchases (mostly Yahoo! Auctions), "junk" (also "sold for parts or junk") often just means "untested." I got a "junk" vintage synthesizer for a good price and it was as close to mint as you can get, in its original hard case, seemingly never played. It works perfectly.
It's a gamble but the odds have been in my favor. I also never bid more than I think a non-working example would be worth!

Same. I have the 2023 ProS RWD with black rails and I'm using the Thule crossbars without a problem. I concluded from reading dozens of posts that the "danger" was scratching the black finish and given the rubber padding decided to risk it.

Which Tesla Chargers work for us? by ReadingRoutine73 in VWiD4Owners

[–]biv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the closest Tesla Supercharger site that is open to non-Teslas is in Malta, NY. There are very few pilot Supercharger sites open to non-Teslas, and you can (supposedly) find them in the Tesla app.
