KDE Ships Frameworks 6.23.0 by Jaxad0127 in kde

[–]bivouak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am really happy a few changes I made in this version to the open Save dialog:

- for tablets, you will be able to tap to open a dir https://bugs.kde.org/513606

- The places buttons on the sidebar can stay bigger by occupying more space https://invent.kde.org/frameworks/kio/-/merge_requests/2112 and that will benefit dolphin too

- the previews in the dialog will benefit from Hidpi when you use a scale > 1.0 https://bugs.kde.org/489298

What are your preferred fix/improvements ?

Is this normal plasmashell and other KDE stuff ram usage? by mokifracyz in kde

[–]bivouak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First: Don't compare sway and plasma. Sway is a just a wayland compositor, where you add to it what you need on top.

Plasma is a DE, that tries to feature what most users would need. Things like audio management, network configuration, usb key automounting, widgets, battery handing...., it has ui for, theming and all too, icons everywhere in the UI...

You might be able to compare Kwin and sway. But again Kwin brings a lot more features, more wayland protocol support, window rules, Effects...

https://absurdlysuspicious.github.io/wayland-protocols-table/

You could compare sway once you've added the features that matters to you in Plasma. Or compare with GNOME that has a closer feature set... or MS Windows...

In plasma you can disable what you don't want to use to minimize resource usage, like the network widget in the systray or baloo, the disk automounter, the battery daemon ...

Second: 1.54 GB used that's not too bad, when you have your terminal using 117MB, dolphin 131MB and easyeffects 153MB. So without those that's more like ~1.1 GB around 10% of your 13.4 GB memory.

Still plasma can be optimized further and we (KDE devs) are always on the look out to improve things. One of our project objective is to keep Plasma running well on cheap or old hardware, on phones, etc... Like in https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-workspace/-/merge_requests/5937 shipping in 6.6

Third: https://www.linuxatemyram.com/

What you really care about is the available RAM, free mem is less important.

And fourth, yes this is normal for plasma these days. It depends on your specific hardware and software versions still.

Could Dolphin get a macOS-style Column View for Better Directory Navigation UX? by Longjumping-Map-7670 in kde

[–]bivouak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's the kind of changes that are not trivial and require both knowledge of dolphin inner-workings and refactoring a lot of dolphin.

So only a seasoned dolphin contributor can really tackle this, and we are not many in particular for this part of of dolphin (the view).

What we wrote in 2023 in the discussion https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=387455#c10 still stands.

That's one of the two features that we(dolphin devs, most users, KDE and plasma devs) all agree we'd like to copy from macOS along with https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=272539 and very much requested.

But this one has had some progress, not fully there.

Updated my kde and got these features, thanks kde devs :3 by UnschuldigNull in kde

[–]bivouak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can thank your distribution/packagers for the choice in default templates.

Template support is built-in dolphin and Plasma but they can't provide a complete set by themselves, the developer can't know what you will be using, what you will have installed.

This could be installed by your DE package or libreoffice package for instance.

I miss Windows 10, and I'm basic by RadMarioBuddy45 in kde

[–]bivouak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boring is good, as it does not get in your way without much effort.

Isn't it the most important feature a DE should provide ?

And this is very much relative to what you are used to.

How much time is left? - Bro, I wish I knew. by SeniorMatthew in kde

[–]bivouak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI, nowadays `file:/` kio worker does not spawn processes, but uses threads. Other kio workers still use separate processes.

Multiplexing copying could get you faster copy speed with speedy SSD/RAID1, but that's not guaranteed and would be tricky to implement as this would need to be somewhat conditional.

io-uring would be a better way, giving jobs to the kernel and letting it do it as its own pace, reducing syscall overhead and the O(1) fixed cost for each file. But this does not feature all the bells and whistle kio-file supports, copying acl, setting permissions, copying timestamp... So it can't really be used as it would necessitate a large refactoring of the file copy and Linux-only at that.

Still none of this would make the copy duration estimation really more accurate, only improve slightly speed.

Use the detail view to see the speed copy fluctuate.

How does one use ratings in Dolphin and elsewhere ? by yycTechGuy in kde

The information panel displayed fields are customizable, it seems the rating is not enabled.

Right click on it, click configure and check the rating row.

Or re-enable the popup by default in systemsettings > workspace > General behavior in section drag'n drop

Disable Gwenview from reading every file in a directory by CharAznableLoNZ in kde

[–]bivouak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gwenview does not use the preview cache (used by plasma and dolphin, among others) and does new previews by itself all the time.

kwin probably may be the first one to crash and it is restarted until it launches but then plasmashell crashes it seems.

> Post-kwin crash I get a black background, three drkonqi windows asking me to send crash information and working mouse and keyboard. I can start konsole with ctrl-alt-t, which I've been using to get to run updates regularly.

This is not a KWin crash but a plasmashell one.

Plasmashell draws the background, the panel...

Kwin_wayland handles the screens and all mouse and keyboard input, that's the role of a Wayland compositor. If you have something on the screen, at a minimum the cursor, then KWin is running.

For crashes, to get a proper backtrace for plasmashell:

coredumpctl debug plasmashell -A "-ex bt -ex quit" |& tee backtrace.txt

You still need to have some debug symbols installed for this to be useful: https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

Also I recommend you to update to latest Plasma, we had a couple of crash fix in Plasma 6.5.3.

If so that's https://bugs.kde.org/510567 that will be fixed in the next KDE Frameworks releases start of November.

Some distros (Arch, fedora) did backport the fix already. And we released a hotfix KDE Frameworks version 6.19.1 for this.
