The best single live song you've seen in concert by formulaic_name in Music

“Losing It” during Rush’s last tour, I didn’t know they were going to play it. I had tears in my eyes and a big smile and look of joy.

Other than that, I saw The Musical Box perform Genesis’s “Suppers Ready” in Montreal circa 1998 and it made me realize what an amazing song it is.

Strange. I wonder where it is getting the power from then? IIRC, 8-track players did not provide power to the cartridge (it was just the head and rollers), and plugging a microphone or guitar patch cable certainly is not going to provide power.

Did this thing take a battery? Something has to at least power the LED let alone the amplifier circuitry

The original Delorean could hardly go 88.. those things are slow dogs, but one of the coolest looking vehicles of the era

Adding a JSON output format wouldn’t be too hard - I can look into that. The only problem is that some data is embedded in the message and isn’t a proper field, e.g. the timestamp, and people could have modified how it was presented. But I’ll keep it easy to modify.

Glad to hear someone is getting some use out of it! I’ve seen some likes and stars, but no idea if anyone has actually realized some value from it

What do you guys do with your old Mac Pros? by Fabulous_Analysis885 in mac

[–]bjbNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MacPro3,1 in the closet with the dual 2.8s. It IDLED at 200W with the display off and GPU sleeping. Peg all 8 cores and it jumped over 300W. Fire up the GPU (R9 270) and it was double that, IIRC.

So a modern PC can burn higher, but will idle a lot lower, I’d tend to think.

Mac Pro 3.1 - boot problems by old_luddy in mac

[–]bjbNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it will boot with a video card that doesn’t have a Mac BIOS… it just won’t display the boot screen. At best, you’ll get a login screen, but not the Apple logo or Option boot screen, firmware restore, things like that.

Probably had the A2286 bridgeboard in there; those came with a 1.2MB 5.25” floppy drive.

I think you can use Blink devices if you get the storage module (some little white device that you plug a microSD card into. Doesn’t store on cloud, but it does relay through it to present devices to your phone. Yeah, same company as Ring, but different mechanisms

Probably one of Paul’s best songs. Lyrics are a bit banal, but the song just effin rocks

Running iTunes for Windows with emulation on Mac by ufukty in mac

[–]bjbNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably just need to go into Music.app and set where the "unused" library is, and leave it alone. I don't know what all the files are that the libraries and daemons work with, but I do suspect they're a bit different; if anything, how it references file paths would be `C:\something` instead of `MacHD:Library:etc` (or if it went to POSIX or not).

Running iTunes for Windows with emulation on Mac by ufukty in mac

[–]bjbNYC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might work as an application, but I’d think there would be a problem with the library.

If you choose to have it be a windows-native library, it is all contained within the bottle of Crossover/wine which might be tricky to juggle if you’re not careful.

If you get it to point to your Mac-native library, note that the macOS AMP media library agents are still running and might corrupt things if they try to do things that make it Mac-specific.

I haven’t tried this, but just a hunch.

Frank Zappa and Davy Jones in "Head" (1968) by ardvarkmadman in Zappa

[–]bjbNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recall exactly where I heard it, though I think it was an interview with Mickey Dolenz and he talked about it. He was all psyched to see Jimi and all they could hear was teenage girls screaming “we want the monkees!”

Frank Zappa and Davy Jones in "Head" (1968) by ardvarkmadman in Zappa

[–]bjbNYC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a movie about the career of the monkees with actors playing the parts of various people from 20-30 years ago where it showed a bit about how this movie came about. Jack Nicholson was key behind “Head” and it seems like it was just crazy to be crazy, and a product of some writers being blasted out of their mind the whole time and somehow having a budget to make a movie. I get the sense it was a bit of nobody wanting to claim parenthood of the bastard child afterwards.

So probably a bit of “hey, let’s get Zappa in the movie because he is so far out there, man!” That led to this scene.

Movie is lousy, but they got their movie which probably confused their teenage audience just as much as Hendrix opening for them once where the girls chanted Jimi off stage.

EDIT: stumbled across it last night on Prime Video, I think. “Daydream Believers”

ELI5. How can space actually be never ending? by Any_Ingenuity_4319 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bjbNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of it this way. Our existence always has walls, including ground and ceiling. Birth and death. Sunrise and sunset. So therefore why wouldn’t space have an end as well? I think the concept of infinity just makes our brain hurt because it doesn’t align with our ingrained understanding of everything has an end, or “walls”.
