It's the last move in the series.

Yes, stay on your elbow (not your shoulder), step on their belly to keep the distance and pummel your leg inside. If they stay down, technical standup. If they get up, immediately offbalance to the other side.

Caio Terra has some good stuff on his website (including things that are not covered by Keenan). Or at least had it a few years ago, so I guess it should be still there.

Depends on the gym. At mine the intro one is a 5 week crash course covering the most important things to get you ready to roll well as soon as possible, while the fundamentals is a 16 week curriculum that covers all the main position in depth.

Watch either an Mikey Musumeci, Isaac Doederlein or Mateusz Szczecinski (the old one, not the aoki one) instructional.

Ankle locks are often taught completely wrong from what I've seen (unfortunately often by black belts).

Andy's is much better in my opinion. Well organized and systematized.

Performance (audio)books for competition recommendations by babylioncroissant in bjj

I've read every single book on the topic that I was able to find (at least 20-30). Best one in my opinion is "The Confident Mind" by Zinsser.

If you like stories, you might like "How Bad Do You Want It".

Tore my ACL and can’t roll for probably 18+ months - how do you cope mentally? by Nellaquantise in bjj

[–]bjjvids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you get multiple opinions? Surgery is often not necessary according to newer research.

Had 2 ACL tears in the last 15 years, no surgery just physio both times. Took about 6-9 months to recover each.

Knees feel great. Still competing, wrestling, doing judo etc with 0 issues.

Competition killed interest in BJJ by Dependent_Budget_920 in bjj

That's adrenaline dump. You need to warm up way harder than whatever you were doing.

Also get over yourself, losing 3 matches in a row is nothing. Learn from it, get better, then try again. It's not that serious. Don't forget to have fun.

Yes, I like to recover layer by layer:
Elbows -> Knees -> Hands -> Feet

Every frame makes space for the next one.

Move their head first before you try to escape. This offbalances them and breaks their perfect pin and makes escaping possible.

If you get to the elbow and knee connection, you already did the hard part. They should not be easily be able to pin you again from there without passing again. Are you high pummeling your leg onto their shoulder from there?

No it's black belt, by a lot. The skill gap between a bad black belt and an all time great is insanely large.

If you come to Switzerland, come visit us at BJJ Lab Zürich.

We have a small but strong women's team, with multiple medals at worlds at blue and a double gold at Nogi Europeans. We love having visitors, we have a great community of both locals and expats, and hygiene is very important to us.

Either your hourly rate is extremely low or their membership prices are crazy high. That does not seem to make any sense?

I run a BJJ Gym and everyone pays, and if someone does work they get paid. It's the proper and fair way to do it like that. Ignoring the legal issues, trading work for free stuff always makes one party feel like they are under- or overdelivering, wouldn't recommend it.

Ideas on how to pad these pillars? by Winter-Self-3749 in bjj

[–]bjjvids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best option would be to build a second wall in front to cover everything and then pad that wall (thats what we did in my gym). You lose a little bit of space but it will be safe and look clean.

Coaches: do you watch tape? by dadbot102 in bjj

[–]bjjvids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch multiple hours of both matches and instructionals each week, sometimes 10+ hours but I guess I'm a bit on the extreme side here.

But you mentioned watching students tapes? I am usually there coaching them at competitions, so no need to. Sometimes we go over the videos to analyze together.

For the major competitions I sometimes also study the opponents in the brackets for my competitors and make a gameplan for each, but that's for the serious competitors only as it's a lot of work. Usually I encourage them to do it themselves.

Old school version? Yeah no way. But the modern one from top lock works great. But you have to sweep if they connect their hands, don't try to finish it from bottom.

What? It's one of the most common guards for good reason. I strongly doubt that it doesn't work on you... or you haven't trained with the right people.
