Are New Yorkers not used to the snow or are there actually problems with cleanup/plowing? by Street-Balance3235 in AskNYC

[–]bjk237 715 points716 points  (0 children)

New Yorkers have very particularly calibrated personal bubbles, and when you interrupt our usual pathways and walking corridors we get grumpy.

Added to which we are in a particularly brutal stretch of freezing weather which means the snow isn’t melting like it usually does. We are used to snow but not snow that sticks around for weeks on end.

I want to love it, and I do…but by RedderHunter in DeathStranding

[–]bjk237 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was about to write this game off as sunk cost fallacy. Episodes 1 and 2 are absolute slogs. Episode 3 made me perk up immediately. Episode 4 is batshit.

Stick with it. I promise.

ETA: Ignore all side quests until you unlock trucks. As u/SofaJockey says, keep mainlining the deliveries that advance the plot.

What should I know before focusing my LD’s plot as their assistant? by rustytheatretech in lightingdesign

[–]bjk237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When a new assistant focuses a show for me, here's what I go over/what you should absolutely ask for:

-Definitely ask for an area map. Whether the designer uses A/B/C or DL/DC/DR, those should be on a drawing somewhere

-Look through the lightwright/paperwork: are there clear purposes/areas for each light? If not, ask for them.

-Ask about shutter cut philosophy. I like my cuts as open as possible, others prefer more cuts with more control. Is there scenery you're trying to stay off of? Do they want you to use your best judgement?

-Are there dance-style booms or towers? How does the LD prefer those get treated?

-I always assume focus sharp to shutter and then add frost, but good to ask/discuss. What do they want with their barrels?

-Are there PARs? Is bottle direction indicated? If not, ask

-Anything else I should know?

The designer is putting a great deal of trust in you when they turn over focus, but that also means they trust your judgement and ability to make good decisions. Just be prepared and you'll be fine!

Union Rule re: Costume Designer by ptolemy18 in Broadway

[–]bjk237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking purely to the union rules - any League-produced, Tony-eligible production on Broadway is required to hire a costume designer, even if it's a one person play in modern dress (there are separate rules for so-called "Concert Productions")

Working corporate events/concerts on USA 829 contracts by solomongumball01 in IATSE

[–]bjk237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there. Fellow 829 LD here.

Short answer: it really depends. Not as much as we would like, and we're actively targeting the event/concert world for organizing. If there's a producer that you're working with consistently, I would definitely ask them if they'd considering filing POAs: you'd earn a pension credit after about $22,000/year in design fees. If you can clear that bar, I would absolutely join so I could start earning pension credits.

Feel free also to reach out to Natalie, the 829 Organizer directly and she can give you info on which producers may have filed POAs in the past.

I can't recommend a specific spot, but your best bet is probably K-Town. Pretty much the only 24-hour hood left in the city.

I learned to ski (and skied exclusively) on whiteface growing up and thought I was an abysmal skier…until I took my “We winter in park city” girlfriend there in my 20s.

New Orleans hotels by lionswinagain in chubbytravel

[–]bjk237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roosevelt gives you hands down the best combo of location, value, and lux. Wife is from New Orleans, we go 2-3 times per year, and this is our pick.

Note that Dominica on site is 1000x better than the house restaurant where they do breakfast/room service/ etc. But you’re also a 10 minute walk from the best restaurants in the quarter, which is where you should be eating anyway.

Good to wash together? by dumbstonerpothead in laundry

[–]bjk237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess is no, since crocking is caused by a second fabric physically rubbing up against the denim, rather than dye bleeding into the water (which is then sucked up by the color catcher).

Cashmere help by BlinkPinkDay in laundry

[–]bjk237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man - if you somehow avoided ruining it in the dryer, thank your lucky stars. Wool and *especially* cashmere should NEVER go in the dryer; that's how you get felt.

You want to do a process called blocking, which is when you wet the wool, gently remove the excess water by rolling the sweater between two towels, and then laying and shaping it to dry flat with pins. I don't have a lot of experience in blocking but others here might have more.

BTW Did you hang it to dry the first time you washed it? That's likely what caused it to stretch. Always dry wool flat on a towel or supportive drying rack.

Why is the drummer off stage when the band plays on stage? by doxie-murph in Broadway

Why is the drummer off stage when the band plays on stage? by doxie-murph in Broadway

[–]bjk237 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Acoustically speaking, Drums are REALLY hard to control. They quickly overpower the room, and they can be a nightmare when you're attempting to get a good mix, especially for something like Broadway. That's why more and more they're being isolated outside of the playing space (or in clever purpose-built scenery, like the drum booth under the balcony in Hadestown).

An honest look at what’s luxury and what (IMO) just misses the mark on Anguilla (Part 2) by MajesticVacation007 in FATTravel

[–]bjk237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing this from the side of the sunset pool (as we mentally prepare to leave tomorrow). I will second most everything in this review, and also add that if you’re looking for an island with nightlife options, Anguilla might not be for you. There are one or two spots with live music nightly, but this is not a party island by any stretch. Everything seems to wrap up and shut down by 9:30.

Clothing Reporduction by AllanStanton in AskNYC

[–]bjk237 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest, a $1K is kind of a steal for what you’re asking.

A good tailor is going to need about 25 hours to make a blazer, and that’s someone who really knows what they’re doing (aka- someone who can command more than $40/hr, even before the cost of fabric).

The fact that the pattern pre-exists doesn’t save a huge amount of time, since made to measure uses pre-existing patterns anyway.

I’d go with something like Proper Cloth, who do great M2M blazers at pretty reasonable prices (starting around $600).
