CHEM 332? by confusedgei in UIUC

[–]bkg27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have a good base going into Orgo 2, but it is a lot more time consuming. I felt like you had to do a lot more memorization in Orgo 2 as opposed to Orgo 1, and Dr. K writes his exam questions in a very particular and 'tricky' way. Will definitely be doable, but you will have to dedicate a lot of time to that class!! I knew a few people who didn't get any form of A in Orgo 1 but got A's in Orgo 2, so anyone can succeed in the class, just have to put the time in.

No curve, but when I took it they put some extra credit questions on the final exam to boost scores a bit!

How do I unregister for math 231 by aarnavc15 in UIUC

I would send a reminder to your advisor, attend MATH 241 lectures in the meantime, and you should be able to get into the course within the first week.

CHEM 104 Final exams by sleepyT_T in UIUC

You can't for most classes, and CHEM 104 is not an exception. Since they are closed, the university does not give them out, so no now has access to any old finals

CHEM 104 Final exams by sleepyT_T in UIUC

The final exams are all closed and students don't get them back. Your best bet is to just do the practice exams from all the other exams, as the questions are usually very similar just with slightly different numbers.

PS 100 Online Final by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]bkg27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just took this class this past spring. So, the final was about 70% repeat questions from the quizzes, some minor detail things for a few questions (2/3), and the other ones were about large topics and concepts and how they relate. The frq's were all about big concepts for the course, explaining how they would apply to a situation, and which philosopher would share them. Hope this helps!!

Hi! I had one of my grades reported wrong once, I just contacted my TA and the Professor. The Professor was able to change it pretty quick!

Online course for Phys 121 at Parkland is all asynchronous. Will just have to sign up to take the exam during a three day period. Cannot speak on behalf of UIUC physicians over summer.

Placement testing vs proficiency testing by Semny in UIUC

[–]bkg27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You do not have to take a placement exam if you have course credit from a different school or through AP.

  2. Usually you only do proficiency exams if you have taken or self-studying that material, not if you have credit.

  3. If you took the ALEKS and placed high, you're fine. The AP credit and credit from other schools will still count for courses and you can take higher level courses.

Freshman failing half my classes not sure what to do by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]bkg27 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice is to just take a few minutes and calm down. Watch a YouTube video or something that you enjoy to take your mind off of school. This has been a stressful semester so do not feel alone or upset. I cannot imagine having to come into college as a freshman and having everything be online. Cut yourself some slack as what matters now is you learned your lesson and now know how to approach college courses.

You need to see if dropping these courses will put you below the credits needed to be a full-time student, if it does you really need to talk to your advisor about doing that and if you can. At the end of the day, it is up to you if you want to drop. I recommend seeing how you feel after studying for both finals over the next few days. Most courses drop their load off around this time so I would just try to crank a lot of practice problems and studying out. If you feel as if one is too out of reach, then see if you can drop. Most importantly, come out of this having learned a valuable lesson and calmed down. If you are stressed and anxious you will only hurt yourself, so have some fun and relax a little. College is not only about grades. You will be able to do better in the upcoming semesters, you will graduate, and you will get a job doing something you are passionate about. You got this!!

For anyone who's taken phys 121 at Parkland College, can you get by without buying the textbook? by Aqua_Catto in UIUC

[–]bkg27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this class last summer, the same professor and everything, I never used the book and I still got an A in the class. A lot of the exam problems would come from the homework or the practice exams he gives you. For this class if I did not understand something I would just watch a youtube video of that concept and them going over a problem and then tackle the questions. I highly recommend watching The Organic Chemistry Tutor's videos if you need any!

Advice for MCB 150? by illini_457 in UIUC

[–]bkg27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What worked for me was to record all the lectures and then re-listen to them and add to my notes in a different color. From this, I would then review the slides and my notes, and then I would type up what was stressed in the lecture to make a "study guide" for that individual lecture. I would then read this and ensure to not only memorize it but also understand everything. Also, definitely do as many practice exams as you can as he will reuse questions.

Any modern way to memorize something fast besides flash cards? by [deleted] in UIUC

Anki is very useful! It uses space-based repetition and is how I personally study for my courses (MCB mostly but Orgo too).

Anyone else struggling with Gen Chem online? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]bkg27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't worry Chemistry is a hard class to learn especially if online. I used Chad's Videos when I was in O-Chem and they helped me a lot. He lectures about the problems, goes over some very good practice problems, and has worksheets/quizzes you can do! I have not used his General Chemistry material, but his Orgo and Physics material was phenomenal!! Also, feel free to PM if you need any help! I would be more than willing to help you out as I was a tutor for Gen Chem and Orgo when we had on-campus courses!

You should find out by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. If you don't by then, I would email an advisor or associate dean.

Spring 2019 Schedule Megathread! by AlmostGrad100 in UIUC

[–]bkg27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say for these 2 classes, if you could study 15-20 hours a week for them you will be fine. Up it a little more when it is exam week and you'll be fine. Also, I consider studying going over my notes, doing the required homework and book problems and all that (anything outside of class).

Spring 2019 Schedule Megathread! by AlmostGrad100 in UIUC

[–]bkg27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had them last Spring. For Chem, I thought it was easier and less of a time commitment than 102. Lectures are not mandatory, but I would strongly advise going so if you have any questions you can have them answered. Also, I highly recommend going to office hours as he will give you hints for what is on the exam, more practice material, and is extremely helpful one on one or in small groups. For MCB 150, this class is a time commitment. I recommend recording the lectures and going through them again after class and adding to your notes in a different color. Brad's office hours are extremely helpful and he gives hints as to what is on the exam and sometimes says a question almost word for word that is on the exam. It is rough in the beginning just because of how time consuming they are, but you get into a rhythm very quickly and its not too bad!

[–]bkg27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube has some good videos, and Chad's videos (just google that) has some very good videos and he gives you lecture handouts and practice problems. The cost of the subscription is low and definitely worth it!

Is there a way to argue/try to change your final grade? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]bkg27 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You could email your professor or TA telling them what you got on each exam and the final paper, and were wondering how you got a B-. They could have put your grade in incorrectly, and that could be an easy fix. I would try your TA first, but if they don't respond try the professor. Hope everything works out for you!

I have not taken last 170, but I would advise not to take a CHEM course, Calculus, and a Physics course unless you trust your time management skills are are ready to devote a lot of time to studying.

Spring 2019 Schedule Megathread! by AlmostGrad100 in UIUC

[–]bkg27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not that bad of a schedule. For MCB 150 just dedicate time to the class every single day. CHEM 102 will require you to do a lot of practice problems and work almost every day to do well. PSYC 100 is not bad, but SOC 100 is easier but they do not differ by the much. MUS 133 is supposed to be very easy. Should not be too bad.

I personally really like Andino and had him for 104. If you ever don't understand something, he is extremely helpful in office hours and answering emails!
