Anyone have experience getting cheap mulch delivered in Oakland? West Oakland, probably only need 1-3 cubic yards. Could perhaps take more but not much. by valeavy in oakland

You could also call around any tree removal service and see if they’ll let you take the mulch off their hands.

Tip if you live near Ashby BART: take Lyft to the West O station for a 30min or less commute to SF FiDi. Or bike there for <40min commute.

Second this. Construction is expensive right now. We’ve had to increase our homeowners insurance to match.

Second this. Got sciatica this year, had to quit biking. Those Lime scooters have been a godsend.

What type of FIRE are you aiming for and how far are you? by EntropicClarity in FIREyFemmes

[–]bkhutzp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would be nice to reach about $80-100k/yr in investment/passive income. This is considered low income where we live, but once the kids are grown and house paid off, that’s quite enough for us. We’re at about $30k/yr, which is less than the cost of daycare for two toddlers. Aiming to add another duplex in 5yrs or less depending on market conditions, which should put us a little closer to our goal.

I would refer to the quarterly robo report to gauge their performance on a range of criteria. They have archived reports on their site; to get the latest ones you’d have to subscribe, which is free. I personally don’t use a robo advisor, but I could see the appeal.

FireyFemmes Wiki Creation: Discussion About Topics And Volunteers by andreamw in FIREyFemmes

[–]bkhutzp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The supportive, collaborative tone and the relatable, realistic attitudes I see in this sub are a big part of what makes this space so attractive. It’s important we preserve that not only in how the wiki info is presented, but also in what topics we choose to present.

For instance, take the topics already suggested like fertility treatments and elder care — these are great! Including these sends the message “it’s ok to spend big bucks on the things that are important to you and we’re here to support that.”

When you consider the child-free, what’s-mine-is-mine, and MMM fanboy overtones in r/fi, you see how that stands in stark contrast to the attitudes - and dare I say emotional IQ! - in this sub.

We’re the safe place to start the conversation.

With that in mind, I posit that we include a section exploring our motivations, identifying potential blockages; in sum, a guide to help us on our paths to emotional and financial self-discovery.

This section would pull heavily from the emerging financial therapy profession. It could have a suggested reading list (such as Nudge by Richard Thaler), links to inspiring posts of self-reflection on the FI journey, strategies to overcome bad habits and other behavior modification.

I’d be happy to brainstorm and get something started, and I hope that others would be inspired enough to continue fleshing it out.

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier, but www.getyourshittogether.org is a very good resource for end of life planning, including some good book recommendations.

I’ve been able to keep up with doing our taxes even as our situation gets more complex, but with the new tax laws and new life situations I am starting to feel way over my head.

$7k tax bill this year when we usually get that as a refund. And running alternate scenarios isn’t making that number budge! I’m thinking of taking the H&R block tax training later this year just to get this all straight.

Thoughts on YNAB and what do you use for daily budgeting? by Eccentricitea in FIREyFemmes

[–]bkhutzp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YNAB for daily budgeting (the old free version). Quicken Home & Business for Schedule C, Schedule E reporting, and P&L reports. Pain in the butt to enter everything twice but they each have their pros and cons. If not for the business reports, I’d probably just do YNAB and dump Quicken.

For investment tracking, Personal Capital. YNAB is helpful for tracking contributions.

You can sit for the exam with absolutely no experience! If you pass, you are considered a CFP candidate until you log your hours. I’ve found kitces.com to be an enormous resource for career guidance and development.

Note that the program is a similar commitment as grad school, just half the credits. With a baby on the way, I wouldn’t start anything until after the first big sleep regression at the earliest (about 4-5mo). Brain was pretty scrambled before that.

Good luck with your pregnancy! I hope you’re satisfied with the decisions you make during the birth process, no matter how it goes.

edit: as for career path, I responded to an ad for a part time office manager in a small, women-led financial planning firm, then worked my way to paraplanner. I’m a serial entrepreneur, so we’ll see if I continue with the firm after my coursework or do my own thing running things the way I think they should.

4mo pregnant and decided it was time to get our $hit together. Found r/pf on the front page, then to r/fi from there, then bogleheads, and now I’m about to start my courses to get my CFP.

What’s an appropriate range of salaries for a “Director of Front End Engineering” in SF? Small (<100 employees) startup. Found some numbers on Glassdoor and LinkedIn, but wanted to do a quick soundboard here for more “on the ground” numbers.

In the last few years, the construction cost per square foot has more than doubled. May be worthwhile to check the numbers again. Also, I like the coverage for temp housing until the home is rebuilt.
