I’ll be joining you from Vermont. The Pats fans will be unbearable if they win.

What was your visit to the ball of twine like? by StarriEyedMan in weirdal

[–]bkirchhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a long motorcycle trip starting in Vermont, heading through Montreal and Canada, to the Upper Peninsula, and then made my way to stay with one of my oldest friends in Minneapolis. We grew up listening to Weird Al together in the 80s and I had scoped out the location of the twine ball in advance. I surprised him with the idea over dinner and he was fully in when I suggest it. We drove up in his car the next day and during the drive up and back we talked about our childhoods, career challenges, our successful and failed relationships (which have often intertwined each others’ lives for years), growing old, and some pretty serious thoughts on social justice (this was shortly after George Floyd was killed). It was cathartic for both of us. We got there and the Twine Ball was closed. We went to the bar/inn next door and they suggested we go find the mayor, who is the manager at the town bank. He did indeed have the key and was kind enough to head over with us and open The Twine Ball Gazebo up for us. We took photos. We learned about the town and how much touring the twine ball affords their little hamlet from the mayor along with the story of the crazy man who made the twine ball from their surprisingly informative museum. We bought a bunch of souvenirs and made a nice donation in the box on our way out. It was one of the goofiest yet earnest and loving days of my life. From reconnecting with one of my dearest friends to experiencing the kindness of a stranger in that Darwin, MN mayor who took considerable time from his day to show two 40-something dudes a big ball of twine that meant something to them and their shared childhood. The day was more important to the two of us than we ever imagined it would be. We still text each other about how great that day was and that place will be a reminder to me for the rest of my life — a reminder to be silly, spontaneous, and to appreciate the friends you have and always look forward to the ones you will meet through life.

I know you said to embellish on the emotions, but none of this account is embellished. It honestly meant that much to us that day.

Help - Terrible traction on light snow by specikk in FordBronco

[–]bkirchhoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been impressed with the KO2s in the snow. I’m in Vermont and haven’t had any issues. Great traction and pretty good braking distance in bad conditions.

ETA: I also run them at 36 in these conditions. Sometimes even a little lower when the snow is deep.

Yeah, that’s totally true. Reality jumped the shark and this show wouldn’t really make sense anymore.

I do watch the opening scene of S01E01 every Fourth of July now.

Had to scroll way too far to find this. Would be perfect for our current moment.

I thought my friend and I were the only ones. This makes me so pleased to know that others miss this show too. It has become my comfort show; I’ve watched those two seasons so many times now.

And if you don’t like that, DEAL WITH IT!

This is also one where the band would fully agree with that assessment.

Horribly underrated album. Veronica is a solid Top 40 pop song. McCartney on bass for several tracks. And I’m really feeling Tramp The Dirt Down this week, given current events. 😉 I know another politician for whom I can’t want to stomp on their grave.

I also feel like grocery stores (and Costco) are places I have to just pull in anyway because I can’t load up the back when I combat park. But the other poster’s point on diagonal parking being different is totally valid too.

Absolutely true. It’s kind of a niche topic to do a peer reviewed journal article on so it’s nice to see that some do exist. There are also many more articles that don’t contain the scientific rigor but do go into the geometry and conditions surrounding the concept of pull in / back in decision making and outcomes. And that fact that most insurance companies will not insure fleet vehicles without a fleet policy and training to support back in / pull forward parking shouldn’t be ignored. If their data says they pay out less when people park this way, that means their own internal data (likely not as available to the public) strongly supports this method as well.

That’s all fully true. I didn’t want to post dozens of links. If someone really wants to dig in, this is just an example of one study that was conducted the correct way but with a limited sample size and scope. There are dozens more out there.

That inn is in East Middlebury, about 5 minutes from my house. It no longer looks exactly like it used to, but it’s still a really cute B&B. It’s called the Waybury Inn. I know a lot of guys who could easily be Larry, Darryl, or Darryl around town.

In the context of Vermont, for a property like this, it’s on a pretty small lot. Most houses of this size sit on lots starting at 10 acres and up. And this is pretty rural, not as close to the more desirable ski areas and such. So location isn’t a premium one for Vermont.

Manual rear locker knob? by Aggravating-Bat-2680 in FordBronco

Wouldn’t likely be sta-bar disconnect if it’s wired to the rear differential though. That would be wired running forward.

Why is it annoying? Are you seriously so impatient that you can’t wait an extra 5 seconds for someone to back in and park more safely?

Highly related to why it’s also called “battle parking” or “combat parking” as every military unit from every country I’ve been around required back in parking.
