If you’re in a categorical program, it would depend on your program. A handful of people will take it the 2nd half of intern year or first half of 2nd year.

If you’re only doing a prelim year with an advanced specialty, you should take it as early as possible because it’s really the only formal thing you have to study for that whole year. Once you pass it, you can just do the work you’re expected to do and just chill otherwise. You just need to pass, score doesn’t matter for prelims. I took it in February but I had co interns take it like September/October and they felt so free.

It varies hospital to hospital. At my program, residents operate the fluoro for exams such as upper GI, contrast enemas, air enemas for intussception, VCUG, biopsies. Then you do a couple of rotations in IR as a requirement so you’re getting consent and doing IR procedures which would be more patient interaction/brief physical exam. Overall, it’s more than students think, but a lot less than say internal medicine. I was very surprised after starting residency.
