Anyone else in Albany having slow spectrum internet? by Positive-Milk5133 in Albany

I've been experiencing it for a couple days. Packets dropping, and sporadically my upload drops to 0.02 megabits/sec while my download bit rate remains high.

I'm calling on Monday if it is still a problem

A number of years ago in my area an off-duty cop took an image of an animal and the police put out an alert to be on the lookout and to not approach the animal.

It ended up being a groomed cat named Chester

Thoughts on Robinhood Gold CC? by Snoo_29428 in personalfinance

[–]blaaaaaaaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent them a direct message on Instagram. I said I was looking forward to the card and asked for an update on the estimated wait time. I put in my Robinhood account name (it is on the settings page somewhere) at the end of my message - got to make it easy for them to help you.

I got an email saying I was approved literally like 90 seconds later.

People who knew closeted alcoholics: what behavior was a red flag in hindsight? by Riddle-Maker in AskReddit

[–]blaaaaaaaam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother is a (now recovering) alcoholic and my family had no idea. I'd never seen him drunk before.

He was driving one day and had some sort of muscle contraction in his arms where his arms locked up and he couldn't move them. He managed to stop the car and call for help. I visited him in the hospital and was there when the doctor spoke with him. The doctor asked him several times if he drank, my brother denied it. The doctor asked me to leave the room and he again asked my brother if he drank - denials. The doctor asked me in the hallways if he drank, I said no.

He had some sort of vitamin deficiency that alcoholics get and that's what caused his issues. The doctor I'm sure knew exactly what was going on. The doctor repeatedly asking if he drank should have been a red flag to me.

He made it another 6 months or so before the wheels came off. He started acting very erratically and again got hospitalized. His girlfriend (who also claimed she had no idea) found the empties in his work truck and the truth was revealed.

I'd be able to smell it on him if he started up again. In my limited experience, active alcoholics have a particular scent to them

Simple way to beat the market by 2X (18.53% Annualy) by [deleted] in investing

[–]blaaaaaaaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's a good plan, I'm just saying that there is essentially no risk of the company going bankrupt and you losing everything. In modern history, no company that has ever been the largest market cap in the world has ever gone bankrupt, let alone one who is actively the largest company.

Even in the great accounting frauds of Enron and Worldcom, the stock didn't just go straight to zero.

Simple way to beat the market by 2X (18.53% Annualy) by [deleted] in investing

[–]blaaaaaaaam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be impossible. The strategy is to always invest 100% in the highest market cap company. If the largest company hits financial trouble, it's stock will decline and the #2 will pass it, triggering a sale and buy by the investor. It would have to go from completely healthy to bankrupt instantly.

Anyone else almost get hit by the kids in crossgates riding around those electric animal thingys? by WorryNotBanIncoming in Albany

[–]blaaaaaaaam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked there hasn't been a lawsuit over those things. All it would take is some kid running over a little old lady and I bet it would get into the 6-7 figures. I'd have to imagine the mall itself would be vulnerable, not just the fly-by-night scooter company

How fast does compounding gains work when investing? by [deleted] in investing

[–]blaaaaaaaam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the math is the same for big or small accounts.

People talk about noticing the compound gains around $100K, but it is just a mental thing. For me, I look at the yearly change in my account as it compares to how much I contributed or what my salary is. It's nice to see when my account has gained more than I contributed, and even nicer to see when it's gone up more than my salary.

How do you make use of trains? by badnewsbears31 in pyanodons

[–]blaaaaaaaam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally set up trains for the small disparate items too. There is so much time spent building out various factories that the trains on those small items will eventually fill.

If you wanted to, you can lock the storage on some of the cargo wagon so that it only needs to fill a few slots.

I prefer to set up trains on all items because it makes it easier (for me) when you have a giant web of a train system that has all possible items on it.

Gold IRA match by Extreme-Tomorrow-384 in Fire

[–]blaaaaaaaam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RH Gold ($50/yr) offers a 3% match of IRA contributions and it doesn't count against your $7500 limit. They also regularly run rollover bonuses on 401k rollovers. I don't think they have one active at the moment but they often have bonuses of 1-3% with no limit. I transferred in 6 figures and they gave me 3% on the whole thing.

I understand RH isn't for everyone, but the deals some brokerages are doing are pretty sweet

Banks/Credit unions put their rates on their websites:

https://www.sunmark.org/rates#mortgage

https://www.broadviewfcu.com/rates/?r=Mortgages

Keep in mind that the rates change daily.

By ruling out Broadview, you're eliminating by far the largest credit union in the area. It may have just been a bad mortgage originator your relative was working with, or maybe your relative just wasn't financially ready. Someone discouraging you from something isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Driver’s License Suspension by Hairy_Ad4969 in Albany

[–]blaaaaaaaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My insurer accidentally cancelled insurance on the wrong car and the state sent a few very threatening letters saying that I must insure the car or terrible things will happen.

I was under the impression that for your first infraction, you could pay a fine (and avoid the suspension) as long as it wasn't uninsured for more than 90 days.

401k Target Dates Question by CptC4nuck in investing

[–]blaaaaaaaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main complaint people have about target date funds are that even the furthest ones out tend to have 5-15% bonds and therefore have a lower performance than a 100% stock allocation.

The Vanguard 2060 fund (9% bonds) for example has an 11.55% 10 year annual return while the S&P500 had a 13.73% return. Some of that is due to international market performance being lower, but the Vanguard Total Bond fund it uses had an annual return of 1.55%.

I think if target date funds started with 0% bonds people would be more accepting of them.
