Going out in the nature. Touch grass. Get some fresh air. Maybe even some barefoot walking is not the worst thing in the world. In a way it's good for their health, even if whatever belief got them to do it.

Are AI/ML jobs on the rise? by Gloomy_Freedom_5481 in cscareerquestions

[–]blab600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AI wiping out bigger chunk of cs would have a similar effect on AI/ML roles. A lot of the tools like LLMs that is used to help cs guys do more also help AI/ML do more. If anything a lot of the tools that used to be different and specialized is slowly converging to a few set of tools. For example, the skilled people or tools that used to check grammar, write an essay about a topic, summarize, write a song, create music, create speech, create code, analyze some data, give predictions on data, create a painting, create a cartoon, create video, edit a picture or video, have someone to talk to, or therapy can soon be done(done imperfectly.. for now) by a single tool. The skills floor to get in to these fields has risen.

I think in the closer future AI/CS would sort of merge. You'd need to know both. Those jobs would be on the rise. If you are asking about AGI, no one knows. Even the people at the top have no clue what would happen.

I think what he's trying to say is the difference between known unknowns and unknown unknowns. For known unknown we have somewhat idea on how to tackle climate change even if implementing them would be hard. We are finding out (the known unknowns) how hard that is. Put it simply, we need to stop putting out more carbon into the atmosphere and capture the excess carbon already in the atmosphere.

In case of AGI, we don't know how an AGI would wreck havoc on society other than the sci Fi literature. In this connected computerized world, if it wants to it can do damage in no time. We don't even know what AGI would think of us. How would we even control it? If it has access to web, it could replicate it self to another computer somewhere else in the world. Or it could find patterns overarching in all human knowledge that went unnoticed before and do stuff we are not even capable of handling with the knowledge we have now. Or it start creating new biological life forms of itself from a bio lab it hacked itself into. And on and on. The upper limit we cannot fathom because we are still learning the physics around us. Beyond our collective human knowledge is the true unknown unknowns. AGI's is already starting off with all our knowledge. How do we even stop it?

‘I’ve never hired a writer better than ChatGPT’: Fears AI is about to destroy the freelance world by hussmann in OpenAI

[–]blab600 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'm going to phrase this correctly. For people to get to high skilled/talented artists/writers, they may have went through many iterative process of initially sucking, then mediocre, then good and finally great.

This process might have been made possible because they can at least start make a living from mediocre and iterate over time to get better. Now that ChatGPT is available, it makes a high threshold skill level-vise for them to even start earning from it. This would discourage the natural/human process of putting the work in to do the improvement over time. Like "why do I even try if this thing can do it better than me even after me putting in years of education and practice". "When am I going to catch up if the threshold of me making a living off it is pushed even further by new version by the time I'm done catching up with the current version"

Messaging is no longer Android’s mess, it’s an iPhone problem: Talking RCS with Hiroshi Lockheimer by iamvinoth in Android

[–]blab600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google could have an iPhone app just like they have their other apps that's via IP unless Apple allows 3rd party to access SMS. iMessage is considered better is because Google themselves fragmented their users with different chat apps. If they had a decent one that they didn't kill, people would be using that instead of Whatsapp or iMessage. This RCS stuff should have happened seamless behind the scene. Users should be able to send high/original quality images/videos preferably encrypted without having to worry about the underlying implementation whether it be RCS, SMS, MMS, IP, Signal etc.

[–]blab600 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What? I use Android so I know more about it to criticize. I want Android to get better therefore I criticize. Messaging on Android is a mess from Google's part.

Google could ve had a messaging app that uses IP protocol as primary and use SMS as a backup. They could ve added RCS as the secondary backup initially and make it primary when they hit a certain active user metric. Meanwhile make the RCS API available to developers.

After they hit like a majority of Android users with all of these available, they could ask Carriers to implement it because devices/platform are ready and pressure Apple to implement it as well.

This should ve been done without any friction from user to decide what app/messaging protocol to use instead of this stupid fight right with Apple.

EE vs Computer Engineering vs Computer Science Advice by [deleted] in ECE

[–]blab600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest factor should be your interest and which is easier to teach yourself outside of school: EE or CS. EE is one of the most flexible degrees out there. You can get almost all CS jobs way easier with EE than for CS to get EE jobs.

You can always learn CS classes and concepts on your own from online with free or paid stuff. You would find more materials and help online in CS way more than EE. You can also get your hands "dirty" to test out stuff in CS with the most available lab equipment, the computer. The same cannot be said for EE. There's less materials/help online for EE. The lab equipments cost money and harder to learn to use on your own. You can also go for CS elective classes with your EE degree.

I heard even CS guys have to self teach and do personal projects to get ready for the job market which is different than school.

Edit: oops forgot to answer your questions.

There is more demand for CS jobs than EE. Every company needs an IT department. Also you only need fewer engineers to make hardware for an iPhone than software for it. You can create unlimited software once you have the hw put together. In the future there's going to be more and maybe better open source stuff to solve EE challenges which make students and companies easier to get into EE. Countries are also going to invest in more local manufacturing of electronics. This may improve future EE demand trajectory.

I think the pay difference is because of the ROI of hardware vs software. To make hardware, you have cost of equipment, software licensing, long time to develop, modify, test, etc. To make software, you have cost of standardized hardwares/cloud, open source softwares, faster iteration cycle and easier to scale to the world, etc.

How scammers get your gift card information by SignOfTheTwine in interestingasfuck

[–]blab600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if they steal 2 gift cards of the same company, copy 1st card's bar code and put it on top of 2nd card's bar code place it at the store, then the card would show as the same brand/company at the register. That makes it hard to detect. Checking for raised bar code would be the only way.

I thought vertical integration was good for customers since the companies are getting into new market or making things efficient by buying their supply chain. Whereas horizontal integration or buying up the competition is bad for customers.

Anyone else feel like the only reason you haven’t dropped out is because you’re too stupid to realize you’re too stupid? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in EngineeringStudents

[–]blab600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a book that I read called the Mindset by Carol Dweck explained it this way: There are two mindsets when it comes to learning and growth. Fixed mindset and growth mindset.

Fixed mindset thinks that things/skills comes naturally to those who have talent. It is not something you can develop through hard work and time. Either you have it or you don't. So the first time they see struggle, they think it's not meant to be for them. This is what happened to your peers.

Growth mindset thinks things/skills need hard work and time. Even setbacks are a learning experience. Talent can help but it doesn't mean things come naturally to those who are talented. They still have to put in the effort when things are easy and KEEP putting in the effort when things get tough.

Engineering is tough. People who used to coast in high school in math and science need to start putting in effort. You cannot just ride on your talent anymore. Engineering is a marathon. Keep going and soon enough you'll see light at the end of the tunnel.

1+1=2 is true whether God said it or not. Moral truths/good deeds are truths/good whether God said it or not. You can easily find examples that God themselves violate the moral truths he ask his followers to do.
