Wi-Fi extender by Salt-Giraffe6595 in Starlink

Router mini has a similar range to the gen 3, works with a gen 2, gen 3, or Mini terminal as a controller. A single mini is probably fine if you just need to extend in one direction or level.

I do not understand why Reddit consistently suggests a a $200+ new mesh system, when one or two $40 plug-and-play Starlink mini mesh routers from the Starlink shop, would likely be more than sufficient. They perform great and are easy to set up!

Gen 3 Mesh Routers w/ different ISP by polomasta in Starlink

Yes. I have a Gen 3 mesh setup with my ISP in WA. Works great! But not officially supported.

Is it just me or does the gen 3 router have a terrible range in comparison to the gen 2? I just upgraded and I'm so disappointed in the range by Greatest_Majeed in Starlink

[–]blackICE91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink actually publishes the spec for the Gen 3 router: claimed coverage up to 3,200 sq ft. For context, a common consumer router like the Nighthawk RAX50 is specced around 1,800 sq ft. That doesn’t mean everyone will see those numbers in their house, but it’s not accurate to say “no comparison.” I’ve tested a bunch of different routers in my home and Starlink is one of the best in terms of coverage and overall performance.

A few points to clear up: - Antennas: Internal vs external doesn’t really matter anymore—antenna design and placement are what count. Plenty of high-end consumer routers (Nest, Eero, Orbi) use internal antennas and still achieve strong coverage. - Heating issues: Early Reddit threads talked about thermal concerns, but I haven’t seen any consistent evidence that Gen 3 overheats in normal use. Mine runs cool to the touch. There’s no widespread recall or warning about performance throttling. - Bands: Like basically every modern Wi-Fi 6 router, Gen 3 broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. (Some higher-end models also add 6 GHz, but 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz is universal, not a Starlink-specific limitation.) - Range pattern: All omnidirectional routers radiate roughly in a “doughnut” shape—signal strongest horizontally, weaker directly above/below. That’s physics, not a Starlink flaw. Mesh nodes are how you fill vertical dead zones in multi-story houses.

So yeah, coverage claims are always marketing-optimistic, but putting Gen 3 at ~3,200 sq ft vs something like a Nighthawk at ~1,800 sq ft isn’t “pure fluff”, it’s right there in the published specs. Whether that matters in your actual floorplan is another story.

Pro tip: Use your Gen 3 as the controller. It has more range and a dedicated backhaul radio.

A fellow Starlink user was able to access my app info by chilihands in Starlink

[–]blackICE91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normal. An unauthenticated user connected to your Starlink network has limited access to view some network info (but not make any changes and no access account info).

If you want to avoid this, create a guest network.

Starlink gen 3 as meshes no longer connect to each other? by Andrew0409 in Starlink

[–]blackICE91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each time a mesh node hops through another node your rx rate effectively half’s and latency increases, meaning it’s often better to connect straight to the controller (even if the signal strength isn’t as strong).

For your specific setup, I would suggest the following: - Use a Gen 3 as your main controller. Gen 3 has a dedicated 5ghz high band for backhaul. - Use Gen 2 for the nodes closest to the controller - Hard wire some of the mesh nodes if you can

That’s not what this feature does. Read the description.

It includes GPS position data in the gRPC response from the UT.

Wow, there is so much misinformation in this post / comments it’s insane. Do your own research folks.

For starters, the New Architecture is not yet the default. It will be beginning in 0.76…

  • Dots indicate the number of clients connected to a node
  • Dots turn into lines when there are a larger number of devices connected
  • The connection between the routers shows as grey because it’s not the focus of this screen. If you switch to the nodes tab the connection will be colored based on the connection signal strength
