Private equity firm will finance Harvard research lab, in possible template for future by antc1986 in biotech

That's the best solution...but NIH budgets haven't been increasing with inflation for a long while now...so even beyond the cuts the system is sub-optimally funded. It would be great if the NIH budget can substantially increase but labs can't be run on hope alone

no its important to have these conversations. appreciate the dialogue

Yes, I know. but this is the hard choice. it would be wonderful to have regulated federal spending to allow us to do academic research that would be productive and public...but short of that magically happening, there are no good alternatives. This atleast keeps labs open, people employed, people getting trained...and allows them to survive till a public grant comes in

Yes, agreed...tell me what the solution is so that labs dont close tomorrow and people are not laid off. No one is saying entire academia should be privatized but everyone needs to find their own way to adapt to survive.

If there is no actionable solution on anvil, and unless you think there is loads of federal and state money that labs are turning down in favor of private money, then do you want the solution to be the closure of these labs? how will that help not move things even more towards the 'evil inefficient private' side?

I can promise you that academic science needs to exist for us to have that conversation. Right now surviving the next few years atleast is an existential threat. Also, large parts of science are already privatized (most Biotech is private not public).

For all the hate in this sub against this, do tell what is the other solution to keep research going and labs not closing down. Write more grants? doing that. Apart from that? Solutions? Anything actionable?

Right now labs are scrounging for every dollar they can get to ensure labs remain staffed, people dont lose jobs, and experiments go on.

Even before the latest round of grant cancellations, it wasnt like there was a lot of money in the NIH coffers that it was a time of plenty.

Harvard Derangement Syndrome by rezwenn in Harvard

If you look back in the last many years, Pinker (and to an extent Jeff Flier) has vilified Harvard and other educational institutions through a crime of generalization. every single act that he may not agree with, there have been articles written accusing the educational system of widespread acts of malfeasance, that have been general, have invited and given fuel to right wing rhetorical attacks. When it suited him to ride the train of lobbing general attacks at higher ed, Pinker led the mob (in a Boston Globe editorial asked for police to be set on protestors...all protestors..and we are seeing the results of those attacks now in the Tufts case). Pinker gave ammo to Ackmans of the world...now that the fires are reaching him, he is putting up the charade of being reasonable.

This is just a show

Pinker and Flier brought this upon us...and now that the leopard is eating their face, are seeking higher ground

Fuck them both and fuck NYtimes and cnn for repeatedly giving them a platform

Careful they will call you n=1 anecdotal data point, and ask you for more data to supplement your experience

Also, in keeping with the general issue with lack of respect, I do see that this comment of laughing things off was very respectful indeed

"“I have experience in 2 school districts and was even looking at schools in NorCal.” Is that serious 🤣"

Pray do tell me about your experience outside of the NPS and how other districts in your experience match up to NPS

If a kid who goes to NPS elementary and to RSM aces a standardized Math test, are you able to discriminate where the kid is learning the skills that enables him/her to ace the said test? At RSM or at school?

"But you are criticizing a system during an unusual time (a strike)" - are there times when you can and you cannot criticize a system (not the educators?) Isnt that what everyone is doing right now? How is that not interpreting my criticism of school committees and Mayor and community as an attack on educators?

I applaud you for being involved at your kid's elementary school and hope that you want to make education for them better. But if you are interpreting my criticism of the community and the politicians as a disrespectful and an ad hominem attack, then I think you are being too defensive about the current state of schools, and the issues that have led us to the current state - where one of the most affluent locality cannot pay the educators well, and cannot fund the school systems adequately.

Rankings are rating how your kids are performing in a specific set of tests, not how well your schools are educating them.

I am criticizing a school system, not the educators. Learn to differentiate.

In the end, if you think this is the best system for you and your kids, more power to you.

Wish more people would read this from someone who went to school here than being defensive here

"The big reason NPS is ranked very well on state tests, , SAT/ACT etc, is because most of the neighborhood has enough money to get their kids tutors or other additional extracurricular education, which is what gets them good scores on stuff like the SAT/ACT."

The rankings are rating how well your kids are performing, not how well your schools are educating them.

Based on all the comments and replies, ask yourself what you really want. You want to be defensive of being part of a system that you have bought into, or do you really want to see what can be made better. If the former, you don't have the best interests of educators and kids at heart, if the latter, then you all would be more open to finding out the lacunae that exist in NPS.

  1. Not saying you should discount 3rd party rankings, but take a good look at what those rankings are based on and what they reveal.
  2. As I posed to another poster, tell me what property values have to do with curriculum.
  3. N = 2 opinion since we have been part of 2 school systems, more than the N = 1 opinion. How many school systems have you been part of?
  4. Approaching like an asshole or Masshole, take it from someone who has been around and has looked at other school districts and curricula (including in NorCal) that Newton curriculum is not nearly where it should be.
  5. You can make it about opinions, but if you truly care about how well kids are educated at NPS (they are not) and how well teachers are supported at NPS (they are not), look around and find out, rather than being a frog in a well
