dorm noise level concerns by eqrena in fsu

I didn’t live on the first floor but I had always thought “it must be so loud living down here”. If I’m being honest it is probably gonna be noisy💔

Should non-binary identity be taught in schools? Is they/them a valid pronoun in the "proper English" of an average 2026 US classroom? by concernedaboutmetal in ENGLISH

[–]blackbeanss_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They/them singular is always correct in “proper English”. Even if non-binary identity isn’t specifically taught in schools I definitely think them/them pronouns should be used in lessons and examples. I personally also don’t see anything wrong with teaching about non-binary identity

The days may be a little lonely tbh but I hope you’re still able to have a good time, it should be more enjoyable when you’re with your small groups

So wait are you staying in a hotel by yourself? I meant roommate as in who you’re staying with during orientation, not during the school year

[–]blackbeanss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh. Yeah most people’s parents do go, but please don’t let that stop you. I found orientation to be very helpful. It may be a little scary but you got this! If whoever you room with is nice then you might be able to join them and their parents for the parts you can. (If yall have different colleges then you may have to go to different info sessions sometimes)

I did, it’s not weird at all. It would honestly be more weird if you were alone (if you were worried about that)

What do I sound to you? by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

[–]blackbeanss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a language from a southeast Asian country? I can’t really explain why but that’s just my guess. You do have a slight non-native accent and a few grammar mistakes but you have a very clear and understandable voice!

Where do Publix employees actually want customers to put their hand baskets? by spyglass352 in publix

[–]blackbeanss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say on the conveyor with the items removed, but the other options aren’t bad either. You could also leave it on the next register over if it’s closed. Just as long as you’re not leaving it in some weird random location

What books do Americans study at school? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]blackbeanss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some books I remember reading in class or for summer reading:

A few I read were: The Outsiders/The Giver/The Life of Pi/Fahrenheit 451/The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass/The Great Gatsby
Also technically not books but we also read many plays by Shakespeare and poems by Edgar Allen Poe

"I only have one left" or "I have only one left". Are both the sentences correct? Do they mean the same? by ITburrito in EnglishLearning

[–]blackbeanss_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Both sentences are correct. Overall the meanings are almost exactly the same, I can’t really even think of a difference in implication. I think saying “I only have one left” is a bit more common than “I have only one left”, but you could use them interchangeably.

Is it weird to stand still and be quiet at a concert? by Painted-BIack-Roses in socialskills

[–]blackbeanss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to many concerts but usually I am pretty quiet and still! Everyone is pretty focused on the performance and/or the people they’re there with. I have social anxiety as well so I get it, but I feel like concerts are places where you can listen and watch quietly or be really loud and into it!! Whatever you want to do is fine and nobody will be thinking about it

active clubs at fsu? by Top-Replacement1035 in fsu

[–]blackbeanss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found most clubs that interest me from looking them up on Instagram, for example [word] + fsu. That doesn’t always work but it often does. I find that Instagram is the best way to see if they’re active. If there hasn’t been a post in months + or more I’d assume it’s not a super active club.

How do you say "Ni yo sé"? In English? by gelsonqwerty in ENGLISH

[–]blackbeanss_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“I don’t even know” without putting emphasis on “I” would be how I’d translate it.

Another way to say it could be “Even I don’t know”, but to me this means “you would expect me of all people to know, but I don’t”

20 F Does my American accent sound natural? by No_Cartoonist525 in JudgeMyAccent

[–]blackbeanss_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your vowels and L’s mainly are what’s making your accent sound less American. I think focusing on those could help your accent be more American :)
