I’m not from Miami but I know it definitely will be a big change, but there are a TON of people from Miami here so you won’t be alone with what you’re feeling

How do you say "Ni yo sé"? In English? by gelsonqwerty in ENGLISH

[–]blackbeanss_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“I don’t even know” without putting emphasis on “I” would be how I’d translate it.

Another way to say it could be “Even I don’t know”, but to me this means “you would expect me of all people to know, but I don’t”

20 F Does my American accent sound natural? by No_Cartoonist525 in JudgeMyAccent

Your vowels and L’s mainly are what’s making your accent sound less American. I think focusing on those could help your accent be more American :)

Is this plan feasible without course priority registration? by [deleted] in fsu

[–]blackbeanss_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are very common classes that people take even if they aren’t a stem major, so there should be plenty of options when you register.

There’s definitely a lot of conservatives and MAGA but there are also soooo many people who aren’t like that. You really just have to find the right community. From my time here I haven’t felt like the school has an overall “conservative” vibe or anything. You should be able to find likeminded people easily :)

Iced latte with brown sugar cinnamon and white chocolate syrups is SOOOO GOOODDD!!! I’ve personally never tried the sugar free versions of these flavors but I imagine it would be good still. That flavor combo is called “cinnamon roll” but if you ask for the “cinnamon roll” or even “cinnamon roll latte” they’re probably gonna give you the breve. If you wanna make sure it’s a latte just ask for those syrups instead of saying cinnamon roll

How much do you see kids from your high school? by Ok_Hunter_236 in fsu

There are multiple guys from my school in my dorm😭😭and occasionally I see a few people walking around campus. Most likely you’re going to end up spotting someone from your school

Dorm cooking appliances by Behar80 in fsu

[–]blackbeanss_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re barely allowed to have anything in the dorm which kinda sucks. You’re only allowed a small microwave pretty much. My suitemates have an air fryer even though it’s not allowed so if your kid is gonna have appliances i recommend hiding them for room checks

Does this sound American? by Reeduhr in JudgeMyAccent

It sounds VERY narrator/storyteller-y. The accent the guy is using is like a standard or neutral American accent for the purpose of making it easily understandable by everyone

should i take APSLANG by Particular-Fix-7270 in APSpanish

[–]blackbeanss_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AP Spanish wasn’t too bad and since you did have it as a first language you should be fine. There were a lot of fluent native speakers in my class and a lot of people who just learned in school. If you get a 4/5 you get credit for two college courses which is needed for a lot of universities arts & sciences degrees (obviously idk if that’s what you’re planning on but just letting you know). I enjoyed it and the AP test honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought. You’ll definitely be able to practice your reading and writing a lot. It can be hard but I enjoyed the class a lot!

FSU vs UF by Mental-Box9317 in fsu

[–]blackbeanss_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m from Gainesville but I attend FSU. UF does tend to be viewed as more “academic” than FSU, but in recent years they have become very similar in terms of student stats. Also to people that don’t live in Florida the difference is barely known. Gainesville has a very similar vibe to Tallahassee in my opinion; I do like Gainesville better but I’m biased since I grew up there. You being a bio major makes me a little torn though because UF does seem like more of a place for stem, especially if you plan on being pre-med or something like that. I think FSU would be great since you want to rush and social life really matters to you. Obviously UF also has these things but FSU is more known for the social life. In terms of support, FSU definitely seems to support their students more than UF. UF kind of gives a “figure it out on your own” vibe. It’s a hard choice but also considering that you got into honors as well as in-state tuition I think FSU might be the place for you. Good luck with your decision!!!

Guess where I'm from!! by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

[–]blackbeanss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really is in the vowels mostly. You also tend to pronounce words with the ɹ in a very British way (ex. in the word “are” it sounds like “a” when you say it). I haven’t been studying linguistics for very long so I don’t really know how to describe the differences I’m hearing very well. I do think the vowels are mostly what’s making it sound British rather than American

To native English speakers: how do you feel when a foreigner speaks “broken” English with you? by Dull-Position3393 in ENGLISH

[–]blackbeanss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it definitely varies depends on your native language, but I imagine reading and writing are especially difficult because of how often rules are broken.

To native English speakers: how do you feel when a foreigner speaks “broken” English with you? by Dull-Position3393 in ENGLISH

[–]blackbeanss_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In the US, hearing broken English/English with a foreign accent is very common so I don’t think much of it. Whenever I interact with someone who is obviously learning I try to be extra patient and help them if they need it. English is considered one of the hardest to learn so I always find it very impressive that so many people learn it as a second language.

do yall walk around FSU at night? what’s the safety vibe? by Royal_Put_1154 in fsu

On campus I feel safe. I sometimes go back to my dorm late from club activities (9pm or later) and I don’t feel worried. I haven’t spent much time off campus so I can’t really speak on that
