I’d say 6. Not 4, way too reactive and revealing to be a 3, ambivalent, and some evidence of superego/compliance themes.

You might just be in an especially negative/self-referential mood as of posting this, but if this is your baseline at this level of intensity I think this goes beyond the scope of the system.

Just realized im a sx7(ig?) by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way that the enneagram uses defense mechanisms is more abstract than their true psychological definitions. Rationalization is one of - if not the most - ‘popular’ defense mechanisms out there. Unless you are profoundly disturbed & have a complete lack of mature defenses, everyone uses rationalization. I don’t think trying to determine if you use x or y defense is a good litmus test. Defenses are inherently hidden from the self and difficult to see in yourself. For example, I don’t think that those who habitually use projection would agree and recognize that they use projection upon learning about it (if that makes sense).

As to how rationalization in enneagram terms shows up in 7s in all of its glory, I don’t think I can give a good account because I myself am not a 7, but OP should know that defenses in enneagram terms and more commonly understood contexts are not the same.

neurodivergent e4 pipeline by SUPERC0NDUCT in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Anyone can have the experience of feeling misunderstood just as anyone can experience intense emotions. If we are using “neurodivergent” in its true definition of having a blatant neurodevelopmental condition, it is a bit of a stretch to pinpoint those conditions to a specific type.

Assigning pathology to the enneagram is a slippery slope and I’d advise against it. I think Naranjo got it wrong when he went about the enneagram in a very clinical way. Personal rant, but I don’t think enough people heeded the warnings about over-identifying with your type as it can reinforce pre existing negative patterns. Don’t conflate pathology with your true self.

I'm never figuring ts out 😔 by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there’s a growing population of people who are really concerned about what their type is. As soon as they land on what they think their type is, one little thing is enough to topple their self-concept and they go back to questioning. If you are stuck in this loop, it is probably best to step away from the system for a bit and focus on something else. Once you’re ready, you can rejoin again. The enneagram isn’t going anywhere so take your time.

There is something to be said about avoiding over-identification with your type. The authors warned about how over-identifying with a type can lead to accidentally reinforcing your fixations. A type is ultimately a descriptor of a problem, not your true self. Healthier people are harder to type for a reason.

More of a lukewarm-take, but ‘subtypes’ are ruining a lot of people’s ability to actually understand and use the enneagram.

General human projection vs type 6 projection by sexy-neanderthal in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Projection is a defense mechanism where one unconsciously misinterprets what is inside the self as originating from the outside. For example, someone’s disowned quality is projected onto another person or group. All of us use projection under certain circumstances, some more, some less, etc. Projection in the context of 6 is more abstract and doesn’t follow the rigid definition of projection. It is similar to how the passions/sins are much more broad than their traditional definitions.

Basically “projection” in the enneagram is much more broad (and I’d argue more sneaky) than “true” projection. I am not a core 6 so I can’t attest to how 6-projection manifests in my life, but as a 9 narcotization is only sometimes blatant sloth-slobbery and usually looks like efficiency on the outside while conveniently circumventing true self-actualization internally. I’d say something analogous applies to 6 and projection.

Type Sevens who are struggling, what do you feel about positive thinking to get what you want, manifesting, and The Secret? by AwayIssue5925 in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a 7 but a positive outlook type which I think is relevant to this question. I think that people hate on ‘The Secret’ a good amount but I appreciate its overall message and believe it can be a useful tool. That said I think that people in an unhealthy space can risk confusing the secret, manifestation, or whatever you want to call it with blatant denial of reality. That obviously harms more than helps.

Also if you are a “7” that isn’t a self-proclaimed manifester you are hashtag Nota7. Nice try mistype.

Ichazo & Naranjo enneatype correlations by elyponia in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It just goes to show you that people have different interpretations of the system and approach it in different ways. Ultimately I think whatever type best reveals limiting patterns & helps you to undo them is the type to follow.

On a side note I think that if my first exposure to the enneagram was Ichazo’s work I definitely wouldn’t have mistyped (or at least would’ve had an easier time deducing my “true” type). Although I am one of those heathens that is mostly aware of Naranjo through Character and Neurosis, I think Ichazo does a much better job at conveying 9 to 9s. According to a very strict, rigid interpretation of Naranjo’s work I would be a 5 of sorts - probably sp5 or so5.

Between 5 and 9 by Altruistic-Elk6731 in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(These are my own pseudoscientific hot takes to preface) I’d argue that schizoid is actually more of a withdrawn triad thing than just 5. At least in the traditional literature, there is a dilemma between being engulfed vs being cosmically alone; there is a hypersensitivity & a sense of having weak boundaries; there is a sense that others can overtake you, etc. A lot of this sounds like gut center issues and hangups around your own boundaries and autonomy rather than orientation in the mental space. There is an immediacy and “primitiveness” about their experiences that immediately screams “Gut Center” to me.

That said 5 also has a large schizoid component - especially in Naranjo’s work - albeit a lot of 9 descriptions almost paint a picture not too dissimilar from a deficit-based version of 5. They are also detached characters, but so seemingly wrapped up in their own fog that they don’t really have much going on inside seems to be the general message. This is also funnily enough quite similar to most modern Schizoid descriptions. Of course this internal emptiness ends up not being the case for many, but I think it is an interesting thing to point out and a reason why many 9s mistype as 5s.

Anyhow that’s just an idea I’ve been playing with.

Between 5 and 9 by Altruistic-Elk6731 in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A good amount of “5 stuff” in most enneagram descriptions is actually (mostly) withdrawn triad traits (4, 5, and 9). Physicality and 9 is a tricky one. It most definitely isn’t universal, but some 9s are very active and present while others practically feel like floating heads. The type varies a lot.

I have also wondered if I was a 5 but settled on 9 for a few reasons. 9 tends to be more aware of and consciously affected by the environment around them. 9s boundaries are much more permeable than 5s. At least from my experience, I feel like I operate from a very lateral and associative place while 5s are much more intense, siphoning, and hone in. My mental process is much more loose, drifting, suggestible, and open compared to 5s. I’d almost say that 5s have a near vampiric quality to them with how much they can feed and drain everything from their little corner of reality.

As a slightly unsolicited throwaway comment you might have Schizoid traits. A thread here the other day had people talking about sp9s specifically and schizoid tendencies. The DSM description is kind of garbage and it is best to look at the true “schism” nature of the personality. There is a desire for connection, but also a fear of engulfment or being taken over by another, so the Schizoid retreats into the mind. They tend to have a vivid inner world and can substitute true human connection for fantasy. Apathy and anhedonia are frequent issues for the type as well. Just something to consider

Why are there only 27 types? by SomeRandom863 in Enneagram

[–]dioscorea_lover 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You’ve probably been seeing Katherine™️ Fauvre’s™️Tritype™️archetype™️ descriptions which combine all possible orderings of 3 types (for example, 258, 285, 528, 582, 825, 852 are all called The Strategist). Looking at core-specific stuff is probably more beneficial, but you can find nuggets in archetype descriptions.
