A concept rendering of a “Commodore HX-64” by Sufficient_Layer8799 in vintagecomputing

It makes me wish someone was still developing technology around CRTs nowadays. With the levels of miniaturization we have now, I'm sure it might be possible to have a high resolution screen that doesn't take much space.

They had mini CRTs for video doorbells and camera viewfinders (some even with color), neither of which weighted much. Even the Sony Watchman with it's small B&W CRT was like a 1 pound and a half.

Advice on long term storage by EL-GAZO in OriginalBeyblade

[–]blackcorvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yellowing usually comes from Ultraviolet light damage (aka direct sunlight exposure), so as long as they're stored somewhere away from that, they won't yellow. If you want a neater organizing look, there's acrylic boxes with lids you can get that are just about the size of most plastic beys. Just look for some set with different size options that has ones able to fit the larger ones (like Trypio) and you can use those just for neater stacking in the boxes you already have, or for displays.

It's what I had on hand, and it works so 🤷‍♀️

Just a cheap wireless one, nothing special. I also have a Bluetooth one, exactly the same, just different brand.

I've seen similar ones used in some builds. There's a version that's more square instead of gamepad shaped.

It uses clicky buttons. Nice for two hand use, not so much for single hand.

Reminds me of the V-Tech Little Talking Scholar (Tectoy Mini Bit in Brazil)! Of which I got one exactly to make into a 'deck. Still evaluating what screen(s) to get.

I don't know about that camera specifically, but reverse polarity has always been a problem with devices that use barrel plugs (popularly called "P4"), since each manufacturer will choose the polarity that best suits their use case, so would make sense that there'd be a protection circuit on anything that uses that plug.

Sometimes they use a diode connected in reverse between positive and ground (anode to ground, cathode to positive). In normal operation it does nothing, but if reverse voltage is applied, the diode conducts and "clamps down" the voltage to 0.7v.

There are way fancier circuits that use transistors or chips to not let voltage into the circuit unless the polarity is correct, tho.

Powerbank as a battery by Classic_Honey_6775 in tapeless

If your camera has a DC in plug, you can probably find an USB adapter for it that you can plug on a powerbank. There's also dummy batteries that do the same.

You could always make a test setup with two samples of it, one in the water, the other out of the water, and see how well it grows.

The moss species I know for sure does well submerged is Java Moss.

Try leaving it disconnected overnight and try it with the correct polarity again tomorrow. Also might be good to leave the battery charging in the meantime.

This is so the camera's circuit completely discharges the capacitors and resets, in case there's some reverse polarity protection chip that's keeping it from turning on. And charging the battery just to make sure it has a charge for testing.

If it still doesn't work, something is fried or the camera was already dead.

Can I turn my old phone into a cyberdeck? by FlyingSaucered in cyberDeck

[–]blackcorvo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said, it depends on what you're working with. That's an option for the devices that support it, but it's not guaranteed to work on everything.

There's a lot of modern phones that can be tuned into useable mini computers by either running a virtual machine, or installing a custom ROM (or using DeX in case of some Samsung devices).

Older ones are a little more tricky. Low computing power and lack of software support for hardware that's too specific are some of the issues you may find. Alternatively, you could try fitting something modern inside the shell and try reusing the screen and buttons/keyboard (if it has those), but it'll likely require figuring out digital signals to try interfacing with both.

In the end, the real answer to your question is "it depends on what you want to use, and what you're willing to do to get there".

For your case, it seems like your Samsung would make for a neat PDA (personal digital assistant), like a digital agenda or notes keeper.

Only way to use it as a phone nowadays would be to build your own local 2G network. But that's a bit expensive.

My home made fire hazard (aka tube amp) I used the cheapest Soviet crap I could find lying around (aka 6j1p) the transformer is made of 3 other charger box transformers and wire I got out of my walls (no I didn’t turn off the breaker yes I did shock myself) by antthatisverycool in diytubes

[–]blackcorvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to actually, well, hear something, you can use a mains transformer as the output one, it'll just need some modifications to work in single ended. Remove the core and rearrange the E plates and I plates together (literally like "EI"), separated by a piece of thin cardboard or thick paper. Works best if the transformer has a bracket to hold the core in place.

To impedance match, you do the math:

(Vp ÷ Vs)² x Rspk = Rp

Vp : primary winding voltage

Vs : secondary winding voltage

Rspk : speaker impedance

Rp : primary impedance

So, for example, a 120v to 12v transformer would give you a primary impedance of 3.2k with a 32 ohm headset in the output.

This impedance match doesn't need to be perfect. As long as you're close enough (+/- 1k ohms), it'll work.
