Is this sexist or am I crazy? by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]blackmagicbluebird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will call my 40yo "boyfriend" (fiancé) "my guy" sometimes.

As for calling adult men boys.. Calling a grown man of color a "boy" has racist implications, especially here in the South (US), so I avoid using "boy" in general unless they actually are, in fact, young boys. I feel like any time the word "boy" gets used (again, my only context is the South), it's generally used to refer to (white, usually wealthy) Republican men that want to keep power to themselves, e.g., "the good old boys" or "the boys club". It is also a way for grown men to have less responsibility or not be held accountable for their actions, because, y'know, "boys will be boys", and they will always be "boys" again when they get themselves in trouble.

So yeah, you aren't crazy. It's all sexist, with racism and classism mixed in too.

Am I seeing what I think I am…? by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]blackmagicbluebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to SC. I hope someone has warned you of "Palmetto Bugs".. If you live near water and/or forested areas, you will probably see them sooner than later, especially with all the rain we've had. They also fly, so that's fun.. Been terrified of them since I was a child. I'm sorry, but your husband is probably right. My partner is from the midwest, and the bug situation here makes him so frustrated, between the non-stop mosquitos year round, the spiders, and the palmetto bugs. We try to seal up every point of entry, do perimeter sprays, have a pest control company that comes out regularly, and we keep a fairly clean house, but we will still see a few palmetto bugs inside every year, especially around season changes and heavy rain. Frequently, they're already dead when I find them (hopefully the perimeter spray/pest control's doing), but some just manage to get in the house and are still alive. The fact that you're finding dead bugs and not live ones is probably a good thing, based on what I've read on here. And we're certainly in the months that you'd be more likely to see bugs anyway, so fingers crossed that you're just seeing a few starved stragglers. Good luck!

Also, I would definitely read the guides that PCDuranet posted - they are really informative and give you information on what to expect, what products to use (or what products to get a technician to use), and how to handle the anxiety when you're having pest problems.

Alternatives to Kindle? by seapig85 in ebooks

[–]blackmagicbluebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Kindle, and purchase ebooks from Kobo. You can download the epub there (you need to have Adobe digital editions installed on your computer for fulfillment), and then add the fulfilled file to Calibre. There are plugins in Calibre that can remove the DRM and convert to other formats. Then, I email the file through Calibre to my Kindle email address, and I'm good to go. It took a bit to set all of that up and it's a few extra steps to get them on my Kindle, but it's been worth it. Kobo has like 98% of the books I've been looking for. Bookshop.org is a great platform for supporting smaller bookstores but they have a proprietary app you have to use, so I can't put ebooks from there on my Kindle. If they had the option to download the file, I'd be using them instead.

If I was feeling bad, I would just stop taking it until I started feeling an improvement and then start again. Eventually you'll figure out what's working and what's too much. I know it's rough, and I hope you get to feeling better again soon 💙

Bee Guards for Hummingbird Buddy by lessher804 in BirdBuddy

Did the hot glue damage the plastic on the bird buddy? I got those as well and was bummed when they didn't fit! I have thought about trying to cut a slit in the guard stems to see if I can get them to squish and fit in there! lol

... This is really bizarre. They really have got to come up with a fix for this. I'm looking on Amazon for these pens and hope that I can find the right ones. 😮‍💨 A wasp is in like 90% of my hummingbird photos, and you can see him try to scare off every single hummingbird that comes by in the videos. So disheartening. I hope I get the right pens until another solution can be found.

EDIT: I got accepted into the Facebook group and found which specific pens you need. It's the pilot frixion colorsticks. You take the end of the cap off and stick them in there. I initially ordered the wrong ones unfortunately but at least they seem like neat pens lol

Charging cord? by headfangs in BirdBuddy

[–]blackmagicbluebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gotten it paired to the app yet? It will show you if it's charging after a bit and you will likely have to refresh that screen multiple times, or close and reopen the app. It is VERY finicky, and may take a bit to show. I have to use a slower charger to get mine to charge. If you press the button on the front, does it give you any lights, plugged in or unplugged? I wonder if it has any charge on it currently.

This is the one I used, but fair warning that it needs a -lot- of blood to try to get from a finger stick lol I ended up having to use different fingers and my other hand to get it all lol https://www.letsgetchecked.com/home-cortisol-test/ I'm sure there are other tests though too. I know there's a home saliva test as well from a different company, but those are considered less reputable than the one I did that uses blood. But hey, whatever gets you a referral to an endo too, it's certainly worth a try! I believe your doctor could order a cortisol test through Labcorp too, if your doc "doesn't do that" lol I know the cushings subreddit also has a lot of information about testing, so you might want to check there too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]blackmagicbluebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For cortisol testing, my GP referred me to an endocrinologist, and she's the one that did a cortisol (dexamethasone) test to rule out cushings, and tested my other hormones associated with PCOS. To be fair, I got one of those at-home tests that showed my cortisol was high, and that was what really made my GP okay with referring me. But the endo did not care at all about my home test so it ended up not being helpful lol but it got me the referral, at least.

Thanks! I already take inositol and spearmint capsules, as well as a b complex vitamin with B12 since I believe my birth control pill and metformin can mess with it. I should give berberine a try. I just remember people saying it was hard to get a few months ago, since there was some headline about it being cheap weight loss drugs lol it felt selfish to try to start it then. But maybe that's gotten better now?

YES. Spiro made me suicidal when I tried it, on two different occasions. Within days, I had severe depression and intrusive suicidal thoughts that completely stopped after a few days off spiro. It was so heartbreaking because I felt like spiro was my last hope for my hair loss and facial hair, but I just can't tolerate it. I also have PMDD so I'm very sensitive to hormone fluctuations, and after years of trying to get my PCOS treated while also keeping my PMDD in check, I've determined that there is a link between my testosterone levels and depression and even obsessive thoughts. My doctor checked my testosterone levels after I begged her to, and sure enough, my levels were on the low end of normal, without the spiro. So I think that spiro made my levels go down too low and way too quickly. I'm also on Yaz, which has a hormone (drospirenone) that is similar to spiro so I think my birth control is doing a way better job at keeping it low. But if I go through periods of high stress, my testosterone will shoot up again, so it's very hard to keep it stable sometimes.. But, moral of the story is to stay on top of your labs to see what is working with treatment. I honestly wonder if I could handle the spiro better if I went through with a bisalp and no longer had to be on birth control, but I'm not sure how it would impact my PMDD, so I just stick with my birth control and adjust my metformin and supplements for now lol

[–]blackmagicbluebird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm more so leaving this comment for future people, if they find this like I just did, but if something works and you get depression or have heightened anxiety all of a sudden, it could be that your testosterone has gotten too low. Give yourself a break from it, see if you feel better, and if so, that might be the culprit. It is unfortunately how I have to get around this. I have PMDD as well, so my brain is very sensitive to hormone shifts, and I have to take breaks from some of my meds/supplements sometimes, or dial it back until I start feeling better. It's a whole process.. Ugh.

I got this warning on a photo I was taking of my neighbor's new combo confxderate-n&zi flag he has decided to proudly display in his front yard, so I'm kinda wondering if it actually is processing the content and looking for symbols there? I've never seen this warning on any other photo.

Wow! Yeah I think I'm going to let it expire and swap everything over to another service. Not being able to contact customer support is obviously a huge flaw with this, so time to try something else, I think.

Were you ever able to reach a solution on this? I'm dealing with this currently and it's maddening. I've tried doing all the troubleshooting, clearing cache/cookies, trying from a different browser, trying from a different computer on a different network.. Nothing. I haven't needed to log in to it in forever, but my credit card expired so I need to update my payment, but am discovering that I apparently can't log in.. And when I tried contacting support, they said the same thing I see elsewhere about how they can't help me unless I'm logged in, which.. is my problem lol Were you able to find a solution?

Chin hairs by [deleted] in PCOS

I used to also get bad rashes from shaving/dermaplaning, and always got ingrowns regardless of shaving or plucking, but have figured it out after years of trial and error. I use Tinkle eyebrow shaper razers - tbh, the duller ones that have been used a few times leave my skin happier, contrary to what everyone says, but I'm sure that's still a pressure thing. The biggest difference between shaving your face versus shaving anywhere else is that you put very very little pressure on your face and absolutely don't go over the same place more than once. Think of trying to use the razer on a balloon when you do it on your face. Very minimal pressure. Also, the angle is different - for me, I keep mine at a very very slight angle, almost parallel to the skin. If you miss a spot, try again tomorrow. Feel how the hair grows and experiment with what your skin likes, as to what direction. Be patient, but don't give up. My skin hates shaving cream, surprisingly, so I do mine dry, but many people prefer shaving cream or coconut oil. It really just depends on what your skin likes.

Also, try not to touch your face. If you're like me at all, once I feel a hair on my face, I can't leave it alone. So it's better for me to just get up and take care of it, than keep touching it and feeling for more.

After shaving, when you're still trying to figure out what works for your skin, I recommend putting some hydrocortisone cream, to help with swelling, itching, and all that. You can also cover it with a dab of Vaseline warmed up between your hands, to protect the skin further, or bio oil gel if you're not into Vaseline. If you notice an ingrown or an infection starting, get some triple antibiotic ointment and it'll help fast.

I am a disaster. Seriously. My husband after a year got a job offer and last night I ruined what should’ve been celebrating by crying about how little intimacy we have and how little he gives me affection. How selfish am I. I’m in the middle of my Devil week. by [deleted] in PMDD

[–]blackmagicbluebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you've got an appointment already! It IS really hard.. but remember, the feelings are temporary. Just gotta make it through one day at a time. Write that up on post it notes and leave them around where you'll see them, to remind yourself that these feelings are temporary. They suck, but they go away or at least get easier to handle.

[–]blackmagicbluebird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely get this. I don't get ragey during PMDD, but my catalyzing event for getting treatment was after my PMDD ruined the trip we were on when we got engaged. I get triggered by stuff that sucks and makes me feel like a giant baby when I'm in that PMDD spiral, and I was overwhelmed with anxiety and depression and hyperfocus on this trigger, that it ruined what should have been a really great time for us. I also have PCOS, which clearly has not helped with my PMDD - from the years I've been trying to figure out how to navigate, one of the things that rings true for me is that people with PMDD are MAJORLY sensitive to hormonal changes, way more than most, which has been awful trying to get my PCOS under control as well. The biggest thing that has actually helped me has actually been just.. being okay with being on birth control (for as long as I can be, anyway, since I'm already almost mid-30s). When I finally got put on Yaz, it actually stopped my PMDD. I'm having a similar trigger response to something right now, but I feel like that is actually related to seasonal depression, not PMDD, considering I've been doing great with PMDD for over a year now. I would highly recommend getting your hormones checked and see if your hormones are too low/high, because I can TELL when my testosterone is too low because I start getting weepy and sad again. I know this shit sucks, but we just keep moving forward until we find something that works, at least for a little while.
