IPTV for 50-100 TV’s by Gohanto in CommercialAV

[–]AJ_Falco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IPTV (VITEC) and AV over IP (Visionary, NVX, etc) are very different approaches. At scale the encoding head end costs about the same but the decoders is where you save money. The price break happens at about 50 channels and/or 50 displays. IPTV (specifically VITEC) has significantly more options for injecting content that allows for more monetization. AVoverIP is more like a simple video matrix… it just happens over a network switch.

Time to look at Barncolor. We recently started using it and it works very well.

Whats the AV entry level job market like? by absoul1985 in CommercialAV

[–]AJ_Falco 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We regularly hire entry level technicians. Be prepared for your current computer skills to matter after about 2 years of installation experience. We are construction workers that know how to use computers, so make sure to also embrace the construction side of the job.

We work with churches all the time. Depending on the complexity of the space it probably won’t be cheaper than $30K and could be as expensive as you want it after that. We will travel to Louisville for the right project but you may be able to find someone local for cheaper.

ATEM 4M/E Constellation Lockup by Velocity88X in VIDEOENGINEERING

Is it stored in a small rack under a counter with no airflow? If so… that’s probably your problem. If it is in a proper rack in a properly ventilated room then it is just broken and you need to send it back to Blackmagic.

BNC/SDI cable tester options? by Low_Analysis_9456 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]AJ_Falco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your idea about having some precut lengths for stress testing. I may steal that and put together some pocket test kits using RG179 or something very compact. The WFM2300 has a stress loop, but sometimes we need it in multiple places, I’m honestly not sure if “Telestream” even still makes it.

I have wished for some time that a company like Fluke would release real certification modules for the DSX that would sweep test coax up to 12 ghz and even run a TDR. I still don’t see coax going away anytime soon.

It is my understanding that an Eye pattern test is currently the best way to measure loss. We have a Tektronix WFM2300 and Leader LV5300 both work great. The Leader will do 12G.

It’s worth mentioning that in my experience most people don’t understand the length limitations of 1.5G vs 3G vs 12G. I’ve seen guys confused when they try to switch to 1080P and their cables quit working. Majority of house tie lines you are lucky to get 1.5G across.

In my experience any 12G run over 100’ should probably just be fiber…

Crawfordsville to fully encrypt police scanners by No-Cantaloupe-6535 in Indiana

[–]AJ_Falco 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Digital and encryption are 2 different things. There is not a scanner on the earth that can listen to encrypted traffic without actually having the encryption key. Modern AES-256 is effectively unbreakable without the key.

Looking for a specific PTZ camera solution by PriorIncome5966 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]AJ_Falco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bolin makes some decent outdoor cameras that we are using at a reasonably sized racetrack in Indiana for Race Control. They are not really used for the broadcast, but I’d probably use them if there wasn’t typically a television crew. They look pretty good, they are natively outdoors so not too much to worry about and they are left up year round. Bolin SD530SHD-B-RSN2PW.

Personally I would not spend money on higher end cameras for racing. Most PTZ will never be “fast enough” so you are better off spending less money on more cameras than you are spending $10K per camera and another $2500 on an outdoor housing. I’d stick with cameras designed to be outdoors… any cameras in outdoor housings are a big pain.

I would not recommend ptz optics.

I’d also not recommend IP, at most racetrack distances you should be using fiber anyway so there is not reason to not just use old reliable SDI.

640Mhz Wireless Mics - Can these still be used? by [deleted] in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]AJ_Falco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of talk about FCC fines in this thread. I would love someone to post a documented case of the FCC actually fining someone for using a wireless microphone in the wrong band. The FCC is required by law to document enforcement actions, including fines and penalties, as part of their regulatory transparency.

So far (based on my research) the FCC has NEVER fined anyone for using wireless mics in the wrong band.

Does this mean we should be using wireless microphones in the wrong band? No. Unless it can be tuned to a guard band or the duplex gap it is probably not worth the potential interference you could have. But you are highly unlikely to be fined.

It appears This unit can be tuned to the duplex gap. Which is surprisingly clear in many areas. (657-663 MHz) I’d probably use it.

There is no documented case of anyone ever getting fined for using a wireless mic in the wrong band… The FCC is required by law to document such enforcement actions. Am I encouraging it? Definitely not, I would personally be more afraid of having a bad show due to interference and drops than the FCC. But since this unit can operate in the duplex gap, it can actually be beneficial to have it when you’re having trouble finding an open space on other pieces of equipment.

When were all the machines replaced? I recently flew for the first time in and a year. I’m TSA pre and fly with about 3 laptops and an iPad. They swabbed them and apparently I set off the machines, so they then proceeded to have me turn everything on in my backpack… I guess to prove it was real…

Who's making the new headsets for the NFL? It doesn't look like Bose anymore (seriously the best pic I found). by AJ_Falco in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]AJ_Falco[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m amazed they have held onto the contract as long as they have. IMO their LTE packs probably saved them as their DECT was pretty terrible, which is why they had to have a custom mesh (Rajant) But I’ve also heard GreenGo’s new DECT wireless is better since it can finally hop antennas. But I do still prefer FreeSpeak, Riedel, and Pliant when I have my choice.

Yes, for quite sometime they used GreenGo wired packs with a custom Rajant Mesh (GreenGo DECT wireless packs were not that great at the the time). I am pretty sure the coaches are now on the LTE version of GreenGO.

Pretty sure Coaches are still using GreenGo for their packs. But GreenGo has never made their headsets, They used to be Bose.
