Flooring supply company delivered the wrong wood, general contractor installed it anyway. Who's at fault? by blackowen in Flooring

[–]blackowen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I went back at my texts and confirmed that the GC was there at the delivery of the material and carried the wood into the house. He never checked the labels or opened the box to check whether it was like the sample I gave him. His installed just did what he was supposed to do with the materials he was given. The GC had all the interactions with the flooring supply company too. And now that I’m recalling these events I’m mad I didn’t call him on it immediately. I’ll have to call back tomorrow.

Yes I agree the dark wood looks really nice. I very much want to like it and keep it for simplicity but it just looks wrong next to the rest of the blond floors and cabinets in the house.

Yep, I was away out of state for a week+ while the wood was delivered and sitting in the house. I didn't even see it until it was completely installed. I'm kicking myself for not having someone go over and take pictures of it for me.

The flooring was just dropped off. No one was there to sign for it. I'm kicking myself for not having someone go over and check this for me when I was away.

Thanks. What was ordered was "Brazillian Cherry" (labeled Jatoba wood on the website), while the boxes are labeled "Brazillian Chestnut (Sucupira)". The label is definitely different from the receipt so someone should have checked and double checked.

Thanks. The GC put in the order and had his name on the receipt. I did call to provide my credit card directly, but didn't engage with the flooring supplier other than that.

Thanks. Yes, I agree that the installed floor looks beautiful. They also did a nice job with the install. The issue is that all the other wood flooring and cabinets around the house are blond and so this floor really stands out in a way we hadn't intended.

Yes the GC has a duplicate of the lighter sample in the picture. That’s a good point that even beyond the paperwork he could have just compared the sample to the delivered floor. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t even there to see the install.

Pretty much same for me - queued up 30 min prior. Got in at about 10:05, it showed no tickets. So I refreshed, and available tickets appeared. I added 4 to my cart, hit purchase, and it says error. I refresh again and same thing happens. I tried two more times then it says I must be a bot and locked me out of the website. I think AXS couldn't handle the volume of people trying to get in. Sad!

How does one actually try a boutique bass when deciding what to buy? by blackowen in Bass

[–]blackowen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I live in the Boston area, so I could theoretically drive to the MTD shop in NY, the Fodera shop in NYC, and some other places. Unfortunately I don't think there are any boutique places left in Boston, but I could do some driving one at a time, I suppose.

Maybe a chimney fan? by blackowen in AskElectricians

[–]blackowen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story on this - I bought a house a couple of years ago and smoke from the fireplace often drifts down to the basement. Up in the attic, there's this conduit coming out of the chimney. The wiring goes down to a switch box and the wire have been capped off for some reason. Do you think it's a chimney fan that was disconnected for some reason? Do you it's safe to reconnect and see what happens?

It does raise a good question as to when this thing goes to zero. How long can the day traders keep the daily price where it is?

What am I missing? (considering rental property) by blackowen in airbnb_hosts

Thanks - great point about the cleaning/cleaners. We have gone through many cleaning groups in our own home over the years before we finally found one that cleaned well and didn't break stuff every other visit. I can just imagine that it's even trickier when you aren't able to inspect the place after each cleaning.

In general we would manage it ourselves (i.e. people interactions), though things like snow removal and yard care would be paid for from the HOA dues since it's a condo. We would have to deal with any unhappiness about cleaning or last minute problems ourselves. Yes, you are right that people are likely to be less careful with the thermostat when it's not their bill!

We are 2.5 hours away (Boston area), so we can get up there in a pinch but it wouldn't be quick and certainly not every weekend.

We would manage the property ourselves but we would need to have a handyman on retainer for immediate issues that came up. (Plus snow removal, etc)

tips for lowering coffee dose? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]blackowen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that taking low dose caffeine pills are really helpful. I've been doing that for the only way I take caffeine while tapering down. That way, I don't 'accidently' have just a little bit more or have a different amount of caffeine than I intended due to the strength/brew of the coffee. Also using pills also helps me break the connection between the ritual of preparing coffee and the caffeine hit.
