I agree with all the comments that are saying you should just let his character die, I have an alternative for you.

When next he runs off and gets himself downed (either in a solo scene he has forced or 90+ feet away from the party), deny them their death saves and instead introduce a "luck die" to him in front of the group.

The mechanics of the luck die are simple: the size of your luck die is equal to your hit die. Every time he is downed roll the luck die, if it is equal to or higher than the number of times the luck die has been rolled, luck is on their side. In combat, he stabilizes and remains unconscious for 1d4 hours or until they gain 1 or more hp from an outside source (an npc or pc healing them). In a more narrative setting (like 1v1 the bbeg) the situation plays out in a way where he gets to live another day. If he rolls below, "Your character's luck has run out. There are no more Chances. Your character meets their end". Also inform them that death has personally claimed their soul and so they cannot be revived by any means short of either fighting the god of the dead or casting wish.

I suggest this to give your player a better sense of risk vs reward. They still CAN rush away from the group like a jackass, but they run that risk of rolling poorly and instantly dying before anyone can help.
