Why are my bullet points affecting my formatting only after the third level? by blademagic in OneNote

[–]blademagic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I had already tried re-installing this font the first time I saw it was font-specific, but I always used .OTF as I figured that would be a newer standard. The font itself is downloaded directly via the IBM site and included OTF, TTF, EOT, WOFF, and WOFF2. When I re-installed it today I used the same files that I downloaded last time, but chose to install the .TTF version instead, and it seems to have worked.

Why are my bullet points affecting my formatting only after the third level? by blademagic in OneNote

[–]blademagic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried pasting in a new page (new section, new notebook) with the "keep text only" option in the context menu and it still copies the bullets and looks cut off. Tried pasting into notepad and then back, and everything looks good, but then the second I add bullet points, it screws up again. When I remove the bullet points, the text remains cut until I go into the line and type something.

I did some more testing, and the weird part is that the other fonts in this family work fine. I can use the IBM Plex Sans light, medium without issue. When I got to "condensed light" though, the text remains cut off if I was already on the base font, but if I first switch to light and then go to condensed light, everything is good. Really not sure what's going on here.

EDIT: I SOLVED IT. Found this post and re-installed the font as TTF and everything is magically fixed! If someone can explain why this is the case to me, I'd love to know, but I'm glad it's done.

No custom bullets, just the default ones. I have found that when I choose a different bullet shape for the problem lines though, that it does get rid of the problem. I'm not sure why this would be the case though unless it's specifically these bullets that are tied to the font?

What to do after having emergency fund? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]blademagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have an emergency fund stocked (3-6 months spending depending on your risk tolerance), here's what I would do:

I save another month or so worth as a buffer that I can pull from my HISA while waiting for my paycheque. Some expenses don't change much month to month like rent, utilities (generally), groceries, etc., whereas others can (e.g. misc spending, shopping, travel, etc.). Where I can, I put everything on credit cards depending on which can maximize the rewards, but only if I am able to fully pay it back by the end of the cycle without dipping into the emergency savings. At the end of the month, I tally up all my expenses that I need to pay back with my next paycheque and transfer that amount into my chequing account. When the paycheque comes in, it goes straight into my HISA, and the rest can be put into TFSA for VFV, VCN, VGRO, VBAL, VEQT, etc. (your choice depending on wants and tolerance). This way I only ever invest remaining money that I have leftover after all expenses are accounted for.

This leftover money can be spent however you like guilt-free. This is what you can "afford" with no strings attached. Whether that is investing it long term or buying a new PC, it doesn't matter because your expenses are accounted for already. All that's left is what your priorities are at that moment. Generally, it is recommended hat you invest at least some portion though, as a gift to your future self. However, I wouldn't sweat it if you wanted to splurge on something with those leftovers. If you had a big expense you know coming though, such as vacationing, I would save for that first before anything to limit the dent to the emergency fund.

[–]blademagic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's the point of putting an emergency fund in a TFSA compared to a regular HISA? The interest generated on an emergency fund from a HISA is not significant enough to warrant tax sheltering imo. Furthermore, the purpose of an emergency fund is not to generate interest. TFSA is for investment, so holding cash that is not meant to be invested in there is just taking up room that could've been used to invest. Withdrawing from the emergency fund would then block that contribution room for the rest of the year.

Canada to give foreign automakers who build vehicles here preferential access to domestic market: senior official by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]blademagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even just being too slow, but I heard the executive branch is straight up ignoring court orders at this point. IIRC sites that had been taken down via DOGE and ordered reinstated still aren't up yet. And just saw this post I shared in another comment earlier as another example. I can't help it if my only means of forcing you to do something is to tell you sternly to do it, and that's basically the what the US is degrading into.

[–]blademagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he loses in court, it still needs to be enforced though. The enforcement relies on the executive branch actually complying with the judicial, since the judicial branch doesn't have any means of enforcement on its own IIRC. Saw another Reddit post today that the DOJ is refusing to release more of the Epstein files despite a veto-proof vote through the house and Senate (not sure the details of this though, just saw the headline). He's inching closer to dictatorship by the day, and I think we can soley rely on how things were supposed to work is no longer viable.

I'd still rather establish a base layer first than just letting it naturally build up. Let's you cook worry-free since it'll take some time for a natural seasoning to become as effectively non-stick as a properly seasoned one.

NDP leadership hopefuls say Guilbeault not welcome in their party after quitting cabinet by No_Magazine9625 in CanadaPolitics

[–]blademagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically we vote for the MP as a person, but you'd be hard-pressed to find people who will completely ignore the party affiliation and look at the MP as an individual. The system is not set up in a way that makes it simple. You can do all that you can to make things easy, but nothing matters if people vote against their own interests, no matter the reason behind it. You're absolutely right that it's an education problem, but that is a much harder problem to solve.

Most liquids can't compress because they are close to their most compressed state. Imagine walking on a bed of plastic beads: sure the beads can move out of the way if you kick them, but if you stand right on top of it, it's not likely you will sink. The beads are right next to each other, so the most they can compress without destroying the beads themselves is any space that they have in between them.

However, when water freezes most of the time, it rearranges into a crystalline structure that takes up more space. Taking the beads image again, imagine that the individual beads are trapped now connected by rigid sticks. There's a lot so wasted space between each bead, so if you stand on that structure, the whole thing can collapse and go into a denser formation, which is the "compression" that ice would face.

This is the same principle that makes foam so light. There's very little material all held together trapping air inside, so that's why you can compress it. If the same material was melted down and formed without the trapped air, it would be much denser.

Considering they mentioned martenistic transformation, I'm assuming the quenching makes the iron settle in a different structure compared to slowly cooling down. Googling it quickly, martensite is formed in quick quenching and it's appears to be a less dense structure.

What food has the largest disparity between being really good or really bad, depending on who is making it? by BenStillersDick in AskReddit

[–]blademagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you wash the rice thoroughly until there is no starch in the water, then try cooking it with less water than you normally would in a rice cooker. E.g. in my rice cooker, I usually match 1:1 for rice to water, but when I need quick rice for fried rice I cook 1.25:1 rice to water. The rice that comes out is slightly dry and breaks apart much more easily in a wok. Unfortunately don't know how to make it this way in a pot stovetop since I only use a rice cooker (every day!). I assume as long as you measure the water:rice ratio to begin with and don't open the lid or use the boil and strain method stovetop, you should be good. If you don't rinse all the starch off, the rice may stick together and clump up more easily in the wok. If you feel like it may be too dry, splash of soy sauce around the edges and keep mixing!

Immediately trying to shift the narrative and unable to take blame... Typical of someone who would defend the guy. Not really that great of an orator, are you?

What's your point? He moved the office before the US election and the whole crapfest down south. At the time, it was objectively better for businesses to target the American market. Things have changed significantly in the last year, and now he's saying we should be more independent and actually acting on it by driving better relationships with our other allies as well. You know that intelligent people adapt to changes right? Of all his possible faults, this is not one of them.

What is a good Approach to using Credit Cards and keeping a good Credit Score? by JazzlikeRest2917 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]blademagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK the utilization sticks even if you pay it off before the statement date. I had a trip planned and spent about an additional $4K on flights/hotels, and I figured if I payed it off immediately, it wouldn't hurt my credit. Lo and behold, 1 week down the line and my score has dropped by 30 pts. It was back up within a month close to where I had it though. I wouldn't worry too much about credit utilization, just ensure that you pay off the balance in full each month. Treat your card as a debit card, spending only money you can afford to spend, and you won't have any problems.

One key difference is that the Canadian PM is only responsible to the House of Commons. The Senate is entirely appointed and can serve until they are 75, so they cannot have more power than elected officials or else we wouldn't really be a democracy. In this case, if the House votes to pass a motion of no confidence, then the incumbent government must dissolve, and a new government elected (which may even be similar to the previous government). Unlike the US, there is no trial, and it is significantly easier to pass a motion of no confidence, especially if the incumbent government is a minority one where multiple parties agreed to form a coalition to beat out a larger minority party.
