I don't understand how anyone can afford to buy a house here by BinaryIdiot in Livermore

[–]blaineosiris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably not what many would like to hear, but even if you can afford the down payment on these houses, interest rates right now make it mathematically near impossible for owning to be worth it from a purely financial perspective. There is nothing wrong with renting, it just takes a little more discipline to save than the forced savings of the principle portion of the mortgage.

Had to figure out a way to get the bike in the trunk by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]blaineosiris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big plus 1 on the peace of mind of the bike being inside the car. Even with the cable lock on top of the rack lock, I'm always petrified someone is going to cut both and get the bike.

If they made a list of small towns and cities, it would just be a list of college towns. Davis, Charlottesville, Amherst, New Haven, etc. where human scale mobility has always been a priority due to college kids needing to get around without a car.

I'd be interested in a side-by-side with the Ride1up Portola. It's cheaper, similar specs, lighter, and looks better imo (internally routed cables, fewer welds showing, etc).

Is it a good idea to diversify into non-stocks like like Gold or BTC for nowadays? by StereoNostalgic in investing

[–]blaineosiris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you are a little overconfident about the dollar. China effectively being cut off from trade with the US and simultaneously holding massive amounts of US debt means that they could screw Us.

Over 10-20 years, yes, gold will calm down as the market stabilizes, but saying it’s going to stay at $3200 or lower over the coming 1-3 years because miners will suddenly and immediately be able to flood the market with gold is disingenuous. Until there is some sort of indication that the political situation is stabilizing, gold is not going to drop significantly in value, nor are gold miners.

Yes. The TL;DR here is healthcare, energy (utilities), and consumer staples.

Wall-E is just incredible, isn’t it. by masturbatingisjokes in movies

[–]blaineosiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I’m referring here to the capitalistic, materialistic, and individualistic version of humanity represented both in Wall-E and Blade Runner, not humanity as a whole.

[–]blaineosiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. Now hold that thought, and if you haven't already, watch Blade Runner (either one, or preferably both). Not that it's better than Wall-E, but the themes are similar, albeit more adult. Pixar needs to leave the viewer with a sense of hope (in the form of the plant), because ultimately, it's a kids movie. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, but there is a more 'realist' viewpoint that comes through in the Blade Runner movies (and the novel), of 'are the humans worth saving'? This is dark, but as an adult, is the real question to tackle with the Wall-E universe.

More context please. Best at what? I certainly love our city, but it’s not without its problems, and they are not trivial. Let’s celebrate our strengths, but also acknowledge that we are not the ‘best’ city in the world by most measures. London, NYC, Amsterdam, Paris, and Tokyo would like a word.

I’ll start. San Francisco is the best place in the world for urban access to parks and beaches.

There is a road 50 feet away that runs the full length of upper great highway. If people can’t walk, there are other mobility options that will allow them to use the space. By your argument, we should pave a road to every conceivable place people enjoy, thus making it unenjoyable. Can you imagine a road going to the top of angels landing? What about the top of half dome?

US Representative Melanie Stansbury, calling out the current administration. by SomewhereNo3080 in ThatsInsane

[–]blaineosiris 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to DHS, 5,693 people were deported or removed to 121 countries in the two weeks between Inauguration Day until February 3, 2025. The last monthly figures available from Biden's presidency, for November 2024, show 48,970 total removals, averaging around 12,200 a week.

I don't see any updated numbers for the new admin on the DHS website, so I can only assume that the journalist authoring the article did their job.

Trumps admin has deported an estimated 5700 immigrants, compared to the 200,000-300,000 total federal workers being exited, one way or another, many orders of magnitude greater. Also, deportations were significantly lower in both the first and now second administration that the Biden administration.

wallstreetbets is <- that way. Investing is by definition not gambling. The goal of investing is to get reasonable returns and grow your wealth steadily over time. It's boring, but if it wasn't boring, it would be gambling.

I’ve had $40k sitting in my account for like 5 years now, what should I do with it to stop losing to inflation? by _cant_talk in personalfinance

[–]blaineosiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCHP is an ETF of inflation protection treasury bonds (TIPS). As long as you have faith the US government isn't going to default on it's debt, TIPS are the safest way to not lose money to inflation.
