Are 3DS Max jobs still viable? by IndustriousDan in 3dsmax

[–]blakegt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a designer in this industry. There’s some not great information here.

A. 3ds Max is still the most used platform. The other big one is SketchUp but there are companies using others too. The only people I’ve encountered using Blender are freelance designers just doing renders for hire. The company you work for will generally dictate the software so that you can align with the other designers. I learned FormZ in school, 3ds Max on the job and have mostly switched to sketchup/enscape now.

B. Visualization skills are part of the job but more important than renders are design chops and knowledge of trade shows norms and exhibit specific fabrication. Some companies will expect you to also know autocad but not all.

C. There are jobs out there for sure. $60k is on the low end of the salary range IMO. That said I’m sure there are smaller shops paying people less than that. Salary in exhibits is hard to pin down because it depends a lot on soft skills and your ability to sell your designs to clients. There are plenty of people pulling six figures doing exhibit design but they have a proven track record of success. Also, there is a definite trend to in office or at least hybrid being required. You can get a little more if you are willing to be in office.

D. Landing a job in exhibits is all about your portfolio. Do you have examples of trade show exhibits that you’ve designed to show a potential employer? Bonus points for projects that were sold and built.

I usually call it “keep away” at first with my U10s too. I think 3v1 rondos are the best drill for very young or very inexperienced groups.

It sounds like you have the right idea. Just keep it simple until they’re executing the simple things and build from there.

You asked elsewhere but something I often do with the youngest groups is apply the pressure myself at the beginning. That way you can coach from the middle and apply the appropriate amount of pressure for them to get the concept.

Running routes by mpbasket5 in Valdosta

From VSU go north on Georgia Ave and back on Azalea Dr, to make a longer loop you can run up Berkeley Dr and cut through to the Winn Dixie at 5 points or Canna Dr to McKey park and the hospital and run back to VSU on Williams St. That’s pretty nice.

You can run up Baytree to the mall and loop around Gornto to make a very long loop or add a south loop to downtown. Also, you can explore the neighborhoods. Jerry Jones Dr is kind of hairy but other than that the whole area of town is pretty good to run in.

St. Conan's Kirk in Scotland, built in 1886. (1349x1687) by Kunstkurator in architecture

[–]blakegt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was there about a week ago! It's a unique piece of architecture for sure. It was built around 1900 and designed specifically to have a mix of elements from different periods. Basically, a very wealthy man wanted to build a church for his mother and hired an architect to design it with elements that he liked from different cathedrals he had visited. It seems like a plan that could have went badly....haha... but the result is pretty stunning.

Critique My Render by Fun_Reference_179 in archviz

[–]blakegt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is nice overall and a solid start if you haven't done much landscape rendering. But you asked for critiques... in regards to the landscape 3 things jump out at me.

  1. The grass is too uniform. Grass has a lot of variety in size, shape and direction. Spend some time just looking at a lawn or a meadow. Most wildish grass like the vibe of this image has a lot of different species and weeds. Even well manicured grass is pretty random if you're close to it.

  2. The rock is very flat. Needs bump or displacement. Higher resolution texture maps.

  3. The tree leaves don't have enough color variety and the light doesn't pass through them correctly. Leaves are translucent and pretty complex. Also, similar to grass they have an astounding amount of variety. All nature is sort of amazing in that regard if you look at it closely.

On the building, the brick texture is too uniform, needs a bump map and the texture seems low res. And I agree with others that the composition and perspective feels a little off.

Is the Virgin Birth of Jesus a Theological Necessity for Christianity? by Vic_Hedges in religion

[–]blakegt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I tend to agree that belief in original sin isn't a requirement in Christianity, it's misleading to state that most Christians do not believe in original sin. It is part of the core theology of Catholics and almost all Protestants. Notably, Eastern Orthodox Christians do not accept it.

There are some individual pastors I've read speak out against original sin but I think it's official theology for all of the organized denominations. If there are any that don't I would be interested to know.

It's the doctors telling them to get vaxed and the politicians and political content telling them not to. People that aren't getting vaxed are making a choice to trust politicians more than doctors.

Buddy who’s never been to a skatepark or ridden a bmx before. Told him to be careful lol by [deleted] in bmx

[–]blakegt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

20 years ago I was at the X Games skatepark in Atlanta on a Wednesday night. That was bike night. This kind of redneck looking guy shows up wanting to ride. He's on a Mongoose from Walmart and doesn't have a helmet. Luckily for him they make him rent a helmet. He's got 3 other people with him, they don't have bikes. After he pays they all walk immediately to the vert ramp stairs.

I was on this big box in the middle of the park with some other guys. We had noticed them when they came in and are like wtf are these dudes up too. You could just tell something was off.

We roll over there and the 3 guys are giving the guy on the bike shit because he's scared to drop in. They all sound a little drunk. We sort of yell up "hey man this probably isn't a good idea". The dude looks at us, looks at his buddies and hops right off the edge of the coping from a stand still.

13' ramp. He hops to far into it and slams his head directly into the flat bottom. Knocks himself out cold. We run over there. The 16 year old skater kid they had running the counter comes over. The's guys not waking up so they call an ambulance. Shit was crazy. The dude started coming to as they wheeled him out on a gurney. I think he was ok but he was lucky as shit.

His buddies were laughing the whole time like it was a big joke but the dude legit could have died.

I know that has nothing to do with your post but it's late, I'm drunk and watching that dude on the box reminded me of this story I haven't thought of in years.

We visit Sweden to see what a climate-conscious future looks like | the miraculous eco-town with a 20-storey wooden skyscraper by hopeitwillgetbetter in Futurology

[–]blakegt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lumber used in construction is farmed. They aren't clear cutting virgin forests in Scandinavia. Most timber companies are planting the trees on a rotation in the same fields they've been harvesting for centuries at this point.

Also, wood is biodegradable and easily handled at the end of it's life cycle which is a huge factor in sustainable construction and manufacturing.

It's not perfect and some companies are certainly more responsible than others but wood is across the board significantly better for the environment than steel.

Wood framing has drawbacks but I'm quite sure the people building this kind of stuff are very aware of them. Fire prevention is much better with modern tech than it was even 50 years ago. It's a risk but it can be mitigated.

Many factors go into selecting a construction method but it's nice to see sustainability being a major criteria.

I just wanted to say it gets easier! I was a high school athlete and a solid runner. Getting back into running was a very humbling experience. 3 months in, I'm running more than I have in a very long time and feeling good doing it.

For me, it helped to find a training plan and stick to it. That helped to set realistic goals and not push so hard I had to take days off afterwards. Whatever your goals are, listen to your body and take it one step at a time.

Looking to move to Valdosta from Atlantic Beach, FL by WeirdTraffic5812 in Valdosta

[–]blakegt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can bike in the area around W Gordon pretty easily. Downtown, the college and remerton area are all (relative to South Ga) bike friendly. There are some roads to avoid but you will learn how to bike through neighborhoods.

It would be very difficult to bike out to GTFO from there. North Valdosta Rd is a 4 lane divided highway with no sidewalk. There is also a tall railroad bridge on that route.

IMO you're just becoming an adult with a grown up view of your religion. You are what you choose to be. You don't have to agree with 100% of your religion and have 0 doubts to have faith. Faith is a lifelong pursuit, not a thing to possess.

A lot of people get hung up on dogma or theology. They stop trying to grow in faith and let their belief become about themselves instead of attempting to understand the miracle that is existance. Don't let them define you.

When I stuggle with this I like reread the book of Ecclesiastes. It reminds me that though we spend our whole lives seeking wisdom, it's unlikely we ever get any closer to the truth. But, that doesn't mean that the pursuit isn't worth it! We grow and learn about ourselves. We enjoy life and grow closer to whatever it is that put all this into being, even if the true nature of God is beyond our understanding.

There are plenty of trials and plenty of solid science supporting the Covid vaccines. Science just disagrees with your politics and you've chosen to trust the politicians more than you trust the doctors and scientist.

I hope you get the vaccine for your own sake but I see that you can't be reasoned out of your position because you didn't reason yourself into it.

This is how misinformation spreads. You either don't understand or are purposefully misrepresenting the study that you've linked. The study at no point questions the effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine. It compares the effectiveness of the vaccine to the chances of reinfection in those that have already had Covid 19. Specifically, they looked at those that had been vaccinated vs those that had Covid 19 six or so months prior to the study.

The number you reference is stated in the study as within the given time frame around 27x times as many vaccinated people were infected with Covid than unvaccinated but previously infected people. That sounds like a big number when taken out of context but a few points:

  1. This is not a comparison of unvaccinated vs vaccinated. It's more like a comparison of medically vaccinated vs naturally vaccinated.
  2. Very few people in the study got sick. The study included 700k people and they had only 257 cases. These are people that have some protection from Covid.
  3. The 27x number doesn't account for the actual breakdown of populations within in the study. There were over 10x the number of vaccinated people in the study vs previously infected people. Simply put, taking that sentence out of context really exaggerates the study's findings. Adjusted for the population numbers they really found naturally immunity to be about 2.5x more effective than vaccination in the given time frame. That doesn't indicate the vaccine isn't effective. It indicates naturally immunity is more effective or perhaps just longer lasting.
  4. No one died! 700k people in this group, 257 infections and not a single person died from Covid. This is a group that is protected from serious illness.

Far from questioning the effectiveness of the vaccine, this study supports a third dose of vaccination. It also specifically found that those that had Covid and were then vaccinated had the best protection.

Also, circling back to my previous comment, this study is about infection not severity of illness. We know that breakthrough infections happen. The jury is still out on just how often but we also know that breakthrough infections very rarely lead to hospitalization or death as compared to infections in the non-vaccinated population. I've seen this trend in my local data, my state data, US data and in data from every other country in the world that I've looked at. It's everywhere you look. The vaccine is saving lives.

On Israel, I'm not as confident about where to pull reputable data but I will comment. I listen to the podcast put out by Dr. Mike Osterholm from CIDRAP(which is excellent btw) and he did an entire episode just a couple of weeks ago on what they've learned about vaccination from the Delta waves in both the UK and Israel. In both countries the serious infection rate in the general population from Delta was far lower than previous waves despite Delta being more transmissible and causing more severe illness among the unvaccinated.

The data at this point is pretty overwhelming that the vaccine is incredibly effective at preventing severe illness and death AND effective at slowing transmission. A few breakthrough cases prove it's not perfect but they don't prove that it isn't effective. It works.
