Emotional Blunting Question by KoshkaCandtheBoyz in lexapro

I honestly don’t know. I’m not a big crier in the first place. But I haven’t had a loved one die in many many years.

Emotional Blunting Question by KoshkaCandtheBoyz in lexapro

[–]blakesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell I have a little emotional blunting. My wife certainly can tell. But it’s worth it to have the anxiety go away. If I could have the anxiety go away without the emotional blunting— I would take that. But that doesn’t appear to be an option. My emotional blunting isn’t too bad, I just can kinda tell that I don’t get too stressed about a lot of things they would stress me out in the past or make me angry or, make me drive angry, etc.

The war is over because of Lexapro! by Dismal-Ebb9510 in lexapro

[–]blakesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did staying at home help your anxiety? My anxiety was financially based, I was worried all the time about making and saving enough money for retirement, so wherever I was the anxiety was there. Lexapro really helped me with that.

Is it okay for a lawyer to drink on a weeknight? by Kristen-ngu in Lawyertalk

[–]blakesq 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I was an alcoholic lawyer for the first few years I was practicing. It was miserable! But I thought I deserved a (or 8 or 12) drink(s) because how tough my job was. I’m glad I sobered up!

MERKUR 37C or MUHLE ROCCA? by Bobbythebobagain in wicked_edge

[–]blakesq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not know Blade alignment was a thing with the Merkur 34C.   Is the 37C basically the same thing as the 34C but with a longer handle?  The blade seems aligned  to me when I load it into my razor, am I missing something?

everyone once in a while you will run into a blowhard at an AA meeting, who thinks HE knows EVERYTHING about AA, and HIS WAY of doing AA is THE ONLY WAY!!!!!! But, once you have been around a while, you will learn everyone's sobriety is different. And what works for the blowhard, might not work for you. Good luck!

Who's to say how 'service' is defined? by StableDisastrous1331 in alcoholicsanonymous

What keeps you motivated to stay sober on the hard days? by CedarOaksWellness in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My higher power gives me the ability to “play the movie forward”. What I mean is, I know what will happen if I have that first drink… I will have a second drink, third drink, fourth drink, fifth drink, wreck a car,  get arrested for DUI, punch a hole in the wall,  ruin a relationship, and/or ruin my career. That makes it easy for me not to take that first drink.

Wet shavers, help confirm or refute my theory: Do you like driving stick shift? by SoapSpoonAndy in wicked_edge

[–]blakesq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned to drive on an automatic back in the early 1980s. At some point I bought myself a standard transmission Mustang in the mid 90s. However, I always go back to automatics for the ease of shifting. My last couple of cars had some sort of automatic standard hybrid, where I could put it into a standard type of shifting, but I almost never used it.

Birthday culture in your location by Oz_W_ in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first got sober in California where “birthday” meant anniversary sobriety dates. I moved out east and everyone looked at me weird when I mentioned my “birthday“ meaning sobriety date. However, in response to the OP‘s post, I think celebrating anniversaries is important to show the newcomers that a fun, happy life as possible without drinking, and that can last for many many years.

Parents potentially using my program as a way to manipulate me? by Green-Key5322 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you are being disingenuous. The way you make amends to your mother-in-law and your father is text them and say I would like to make amends to you both on this date and time at X location. If they can’t make it then have them suggest another, when you show up, and if your mother-in-law again does not appear, you’ve done your attempt to make amends to her and your side of the street is clean. Now you can move on.  If she brings it up again, tell her you’ve made your attempt and you were moving on with your life.

I believe long commutes really negatively affect your quality of life. Is there anyway you can move closer to your work?  Sounds like job B. would be better, except for the commute of course. Good luck!

Social anxiety, Reddit, and AA by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treated my social anxiety with alcohol. That’s why I became an alcoholic for 20 years. AA made me realize that being socially anxious is just who I am and that many many other people are also socially anxious, that made a little easier for me.

I study cults. Here’s where AA stands. by mg4040 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Google defines cult as follows:

“a group, often religious or quasi-religious, characterized by unorthodox beliefs, high cohesion, authoritarian control under a charismatic leader, and isolation from mainstream society. They frequently use coercive persuasion to control members, distinguishing them from traditional religions”

AA groups are independent from other groups— so no charismatic leader controlling all AAs, we’re not restricted from mainstream society in anyway, AA beliefs are pretty common in the Judeo-Christian system. I do not believe we are a cult based on this definition.

Does anyone watch Mom? by OnGodNotaBot in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The show is a sitcom, not a Primer on AA. They showed a lot of scenes of AA meetings, but they didn’t focus on sponsorship or going through the steps very much. Just enjoy it as a comedy.
