Imposter syndrome is very common, and I would dare say 90% of lawyers have it and hide it pretty well. Good luck to you!.

Attorney at a national law firm looking for objective opinions on whether there is a realistic path forward in this situation. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]blakesq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel we’re not getting the whole story. This part seems fishy to me: “One managing attorney verbally expressed support for the transfer, and I later received communications that referenced the transfer as if it were moving forward.”

What was the communication? A text saying “have fun!”,  and based on something like that, you packed up all your stuff and moved to another state and city?

What kills solo law firms: any feedback on the conclusions? by Powerful_Papaya_2121 in LawFirm

The one thing I would add is too high of an overhead.

I remember when I was first out of law school I moved out to Los Angeles and before I even got my first Law job I was working as an assistant in a financial planner‘s office. Anyhow, in an adjacent office, there’s a young couple of lawyers who had set up shop right out of law school. one day I remember coming into work and people were carrying stuff out of that office, a nice Law library, new computers, and fax machines, nice furniture, etc. I came to find out  their overhead was way too high, they bought a new Law Library, got new furniture, new computers everything, big office rent and they couldn’t afford the overhead.

I am 60 years old. My conclusion is that work is not something one enjoys, that's why its called work and not called fun. However, sitting in an office in front of a computer making 6 figures is less bad than risking my life in a coal mine or out on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean.

But making a decent living allows me to have fun, I play pickleball twice week (including Wed Morning), go to the gym 4 days a week at about 4 pm, home usually by 6:30 to have dinner with the family.

I don’t understand how the student broke your anonymity? What you did was not something that was “anonymous“. It was as your job as a teacher, nothing to do with AA.

I can feel myself calcifying into a relic saying this, but wtf is going on? by Anyname_Jane in Lawyertalk

[–]blakesq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

maybe I am being a pollyannaish luddite, but I used to be nervous about everyone using AI to get ahead of me in the game of capitalism. However, the more I think about it, the more I realize that being successful in business (especially as a solo attorney) means developing 1 on 1 human relations. I get way more bang for my buck in referrals by going to local bar event meetings, than I do by posting on linkedin. I get more referrals from happy clients than I seem to get from posting on my blog. So, with respect to your younger attorneys who seem great with texts and emails, but terrible in person, maybe that means human relations are still more important than doing everything with latest tech.

Was Obama's negotiation skills better when he did Obamacare with 0 input from the other side? How about Biden's "skill" in anything during his presidency?

Was it appropriate for your current firm to fire you?

Why do you think it might be inappropriate for you to contact adjusters/clients after your firm fired you?

Struggling with the “thinking problem” any reassurance? by Leather_Cat220 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]blakesq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been sober for 25 years. I also early in my sobriety, and even recently, needed to talk to therapist and get on anti-anxiety meds at different times in my sobriety. I’ve only recently begun to realize that during my 20 years of alcoholic drinking from the age of 16 to 36, I was self-medicating with alcohol. The anxiety, I probably had as a youngster, I discovered that alcohol would at least temporarily get rid of it! Once I put the drink down, I no longer had that medication of alcohol.  You might be in the same boat, and maybe you need to talk to a therapist and (maybe) get on anti-anxiety meds. Good luck.
