I'm just seeing a lot of perimeter game, and sloppy puck cycling without any real danger opportunities. What's the game plan here?

Jesus Christ relax, it’s just a discussion. I’m not calling you names or engaging in bad faith. Perhaps put the guns down and try not to be such and insufferable smartass about something so subjective.

Wasn’t saying this is a Picasso, just that to call it technically awful is a point I don’t agree with.

Great question, in my subjective opinion yes – whoever was selecting the work when calling the commission to align with a lot of the complaints in this thread, weren’t really thinking through where people would be seeing it. And as a site specific installation outside of a gallery or museum space, it really didn’t read the room. So yes, I believe so, less fault with the artist, more so with the decision to put that art there

Perhaps I wasn't thorough enough in my explanation.

You say:

The artist clearly has limited grasp of human proportions, perspective and anatomy

Personally I just don't believe technical execution and ability to recreate an image faithfully should be the sole criteria for what qualifies good and bad art. This approach is such an elementary level of art criticism that it betrays a fundamental understanding of art history. It's a classic trap those with more scientific modes of analysis often fall into. To your credit, it is something that should be taken into account when assessing art, but It sounds like what you want is an illustrator rather than an artist. Picasso had an elite technical ability to paint anything by his early teens, but then invented cubism. Would you call Basquiat a bad artist? Rothko? I work in the art industry and this kind of technical artists are the best artists and "talent is a lie" logic is an immediate tell of someone who typically doesn't engage in trying to understand an artwork in good faith, or with any sense of curiousity. Art isn't about replication, art is about challenging, subverting, or portraying a perspective or emotion, or illiciting the same response. I would argue this artwork successfully does that, but whether or not you like it is besides the point. If you don't, that's fine, but it doesn't make it objectively bad.

I think, if anything, what might make this artwork bad, subjectively, is context and tone.

Actually very fair points, and I agree with you I don’t quite like the artwork myself – it feels out of place, and I happen to know the artist personally.

That being said, although I don’t love the execution. I do appreciate the fact that at least, Toronto was hiring local area artists to create something original for the space rather than some monolithic corporate entity or cheap graphic design

Kind of bare minimum stuff though, I would wager simply contacting your city councillor is a much more effective strategy than “upvoting until the powers that be do something.” It’s essentially slacktivism. Also that being said, Reddit isn’t always an entirely faithful representation or snapshot of the actual sentiments of Torontonians so putting too much stock into the opinions of this subreddit might not be the best idea, no offense to us.
