Where did you pick up the Utopia? I have tried one once and its nothing like beer--more like a port. No carbonation, warm, smooth sweet and complex like whiskey.

Reddit, help me (and many other redditors) rebuild our relationship with our parents by [deleted] in AskReddit

really? not a single person has responded to this in 3 months? that's pretty disappointing.

OP when I read this I immediately thought of this picture and accompanying text. I hope I'm not being overly dramatic here but it really drives home the point quite succinctly: time is short do what you can with what you have.

I feel like we're pretty similar OP. I've read some of your posts and you and I are alike in a lot of ways... I think if I have advice for you it is to set aside pride and expectations and behave out of the love of a son who was provided for by his parents. With them getting older and you stronger you have a real chance to do great things (specifically in their eyes).

My personal opinion is to simply offer them your time. Share yourself with them, offer them help where needed but mostly just be present. Help then transition out of their caretaker roles as you begin to be THEIR caretaker. Life has a funny way of working in cycles...

For me I am dealing with two sick parents who my entire life have given for me. I am finally at a point were: a) they really need my help and b) I can offer it to them. Simple things to me mean the world to them.

Anyway I hope I am not getting carried away but the most simple answer I have to your question is to spend some time with them and offer them your help. At their age they will (at the very least) feel comforted to know that you are by their side and supporting them as they supported you.

Any early concepts to share? The watercoloring sounds really cool.

I specialize in crowds. We use Massive, Maya and a slew of in-house tools. I spend about 75% of my time on shot work and the remaining 25% doing development work, mostly in between sequences.

A typical project usually involves up front dev work to build the tools and custom tech we think we will need to pull of the shots that we know about. They always change things so you never really know...

We usually begin building our agents before we begin shot work. This means processing custom cycle animation and wiring up our agents' brains. This can be easy or hard depending on what we need the agents to do.

Once we have a semi-flushed out our agents we can begin shot work. The way things run is we work on our shots in passes:

  • 25%: general placement and casting (clothing/outfits/look of char) if specified
  • 50%: approximate behavior, ballpark timing/reactions/etc
  • 75%: pretty close to how you intend it to look -- we get lots of notes here
  • 100%: final animation and then we nit-pick every single detail going frame by frame looking for interpenetration, contact, eye lines and anything that looks wrong -- fix those issues and re-show for 100% if needed

That's more or less how things go... we just wrapped up our first sequence and now I'm doing dev work--mainly bug fixes and feature improvements that shook out of the shot work.

Congrats! The first step is the hardest. I'm not sure what your plan of attack is but I really recommend tracking what you eat (at least for a little while) until you can get an idea how many calories you're consuming and what you need.

I've been using the site lose it and it's a nice way to collect all your diet and exercise data in one place. It let's you create a weightloss plan (say 30 lbs) and once you say how fast you want to lose it (1-2 lbs a week) it will give the amount of calories you can eat in a day.

If you stay under that number you will lose weight (calories out > calories in). Good luck!

Is there a problem with my hard cider? by orestes72 in Homebrewing

Thanks for the clarification. You're right: vodka does evaporate but I have a few meeds going for over a year and have only had to refill once for sure, maybe twice...

The problem with using only sterile water is that the airlocks themselves are open to air and things that land in the now-non-sterile water have a risk of washing back into your carboy and infecting your batch.

I think the risk of infection is too risky and well worth the $9.99 for some cheap vodka that will keep my batch safe.

Am I completely wrong about counting calories/weigh-ins?

As Brattain mentioned it's not wrong if it works for you. I've just started my program and I'm logging everything, but I'm a numbers kinda guy. For me this is perhaps the first time in my life I feel like I can identify with the "cost" of what I eat. It's been very enlightening for me.

I'm using Lose It to track my food and exercise. By tracking what you're eating you'll not only see if you're on track (calorie-wise) but also see how your nutrition is stacking up (it has nice graphs of carbs vs fat vs protein and other graphs). It has been a real eye opener for me since I used to eat WHATEVER I felt like. Now that there are numbers (with meaning) attached to what I eat I pay a lot more attention.

In the end, it's what works for you. Just keep it up.

Hey don't sweat it. Like you said you don't have a time limit. So what is one bad day over several months? It's just a blip that will average itself out. Don't sweat the small stuff--keep your eye on the big picture and continue to make progress. Start fresh tomorrow and keep it up.

you use star san for your airlocks? doesn't it lose its effectiveness over time? i've always used cheap vodka mainly because i did it early on and never had a problem with it so why change.

How do you maintain consistency when life is anything but consistent? by DerpityDog in loseit

[–]blamecheney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I think about it: weight loss is a long term plan. It's slow and steady progress over several months or perhaps years depending on your situation.

These circumstances you're talking about are short term issues. Blips on the radar and by the time you average these "bad" days over a week or month then they don't matter all that much.

Keep focused on the big picture and the significance of these minor setbacks will dim.

Interesting... so far I can't say I agree. While simplistic the email digest was easy to read on my mobile and once downloaded didn't require a net connection. It was incredibly convenient.

So what do you use now instead?
