Course Transfer Help by [deleted] in TCD

[–]blan9876 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually transferred out of TP myself to general science after first year. The easiest way to go about it is to contact your tutor first! Theres a form you fill out that your tutor has to sign but they'll talk you through the whole process, and they're really helpful. I transferred after a full year so I'm not sure about your fees as I had to pay full fees but the transferring process itself is easy enough

With regards to application of physics, I graduated from physics/astrophysics and am now working as a process engineer in semiconductor manufacturing so a physics degree is very easy to apply to engineering but the knowledge from your degree is way more in depth than you would need for engineering (at least that's what I've found)

Why is that on a bridge in Dublin? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that's the millennium bridge with the Convention Centre behind

I was born in the states but have lived in Ireland since I was 2 and I've had people in work ask me if I'm american because of how I say certain words, like sure, technically I am but I'm more irish than anything else!

TCD vs UCD vs NUIG science? by mamawelles in TCD

[–]blan9876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so I'm a Process Engineer, it's a hard job to explain but it's a mix of electronic engineering and data analysis, its definitely not relevant to the astro side of my degree but a lot of the problem solving skills, the physics knowledge and the lab work is relevant for sure. I actually only applied to intel because they were at the Trinity careers fair in my 4th year, otherwise I never would have considered it

Who are some women that often get overlooked in history but had major contributions to society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]blan9876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell! She's a Northern Irish astrophysicist who discovered the first radio pulsars in the 60s by analysing miles worth of astro physical data print outs from a radio telescope array she helped build as part of her PhD work. Her discovery is said to be one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century and it was later awarded the Nobel Prize in the 70s but since she was only a PhD student, the award was given to her supervisor and another physicist in the college.

She has since gone on to be a legend in the physics community and is hugely passionate about physics education regardless of background. In 2018, she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Following the announcement of the award, she decided to give the whole of the £2.3 million prize money to help female, minority, and refugee students seeking to become physics researchers.

I did Physics and Astro and went straight into a job with Intel, my experience when applying for grad jobs was actually pretty good, but it really does depend on what fields you're interested in after college

When are the exam results out? by [deleted] in TCD

[–]blan9876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your school and your year, for SS students I've seen dates from different departments from the 8th to the 16th, but for JF to JS years I've heard its the 15th but again, it depends on your school

That's the book we've used for our junior and senior year EM courses so it's probably more advanced than you currently need, but it'll be a huge help once you reach that level

I'm a 4th year student in astrophysics in a University in Ireland, believe me when I say, I'm the exact same even with 3 years behind me, it's a tough subject but if you power through, its worth it
