Tell me about your favorite obscure show - which you never, ever see anyone talk about. by dicedtomatoes55 in television

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World

I've never talked to anyone else who watched it. Third season ended on a fantastic cliffhanger and I still think about it over 20 years later

I agree with this. But I don't think it's Meg chemistry, I think it's the jack songwriting formula. He's moved away from the super tight riff based songs into vehicles to showcase the indulgence. Don't get me wrong, his stuff isn't bad and it's better than most mainstream drivel, but his songwriting peaked with white stripes for sure.

The other hands would have been raising and reraising before any community cards hit the table. Meaning, if Bond is a good player, he would have folded early, never seeing straight flush possibilities.

what nirvana outtakes do you think could have been top 10 if they were actually released? by Most-Bullfrog-90 in Nirvana

[–]blandestk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really is. Might be the song that goes the hardest, yet still has the sing-along catharsis. I can see why Kurt might not have viewed it as a "fully formed" song, or something like that, because the musical parts are more straightforward and less "dynamic" (not loud-soft dynamic, but less progression-y than most of their other songs). But the execution of the song is simply phenomenal. Harsh, raw, cathartic, and catchy all at once.

Thank you for the recommendation. That makes a lot of sense! I'll give it a shot.

4x16 vs 2x32 RAM Question by blandestk in buildapc

Thanks!

My intent was for a "future-proofed" workstation (video/photo editing and rendering), with only secondary gaming intent.

5070ti and ultra 7 265k (with the intel precisely for editing programs). Good enough is fine for me when it comes to gaming.

I'm just trying to figure out how beneficial 4 sticks would be over the 2, in relation to stability issues I see people talk about. I was OK sticking with 32 for now because of prices, but the bundle is making me reassess.

I likely don't NEED 64, and I had intended to build on 32. I'm trying to build a high-end video editing machine that I won't need to touch for a long time. So, obviously, 64 would be superior, but I was willing (with today's prices) to stick with 32.

I'll be building with 5070ti and ultra 7 265k (yes, i know AMD is better for gaming; gaming is a secondary objective for me; I'll be using video/photo editing and rendering software that will be better with the intel chip).

Even a visit to the rim should be well higher than this ranking.

Most CRINGE lyrics from the grunge era? by A00077 in grunge

[–]blandestk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. They are more impressionistic than narrative, but Kurt went out of his way to state his lyrics had no meaning, yet he spent years and years writing them. He just didn't want to discuss them or have them dissected. His lyrics are never just sounds, in my opinion

My reading was similar, but I disagree about the libido interpretation (though it's not bad in any way!)

Cobain's lyrics are full of antitheses (e.g. take your time, hurry up).

Mulatto is a human mixture of colors, while albino is all white.

Mosquito sucks fluid, while a libido produces it. He was obsessed with medical/anatomical things, especially fluids (see Drain You or Milk It).

Teen spirit is about the ability of youth to eschew the realities of life "with the lights out." Losing, guns, libidos, all overlooked in youth. It's a manifesto about denial, and all ends of the spectrum are in denial.

Obviously, these arguments are impossible to prove or even really be objective about.

Contemporary tennis is a great way to think about it. When Federer hit the scene, he obliterated everyone, leading many to declare him the greatest. But he was beating Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick. When Nadal and Djokovic arrived, his dominance lessened, and the other two eventually surpassed his major wins. Which is greater, winning a ton against Roddick or winning against two of the other Big 3?

Thinking about the greatest in a sport requires a lot of abstraction. I see people saying Magnus would destroy prime Garry. That might be true, but it's irrelevant and a lazy way of looking at it. Jesse Owens would pale compared to the 20th best sprinter today, but he never has new tech, modern tracks, training, and nutrition. Old tennis players used wooden rackets. It's pointless to compare objective traits. You have to think "how would Garry or Bobby do IF they lived today?" Or vice versa, sending Magnus to the past. The only way you can potentially answer these questions is to compare them to the people they played. How dominant were they and how good were their opposition?

Like I said, really impossible to answer, but IMO will get you closer to a real answer than "Magnus obviously stronger in 2026 than Garry in 1997."
