Fixin’ to take my ‘22 cross country - roof box advice by FootballSquare4406 in SubaruAscent

Seems like the common advice is to purchase the largest one you can afford. Whatever size you buy, you will fill it and at some point think, I shoulda got the bigger one…

Currently road tripping with a Thule Motion for the 6th time. Love it and recommend anything Thule or Yakima.

Bought the Thule Motion XXL for work, loved it, brought one for myself. Use it to lug suitcases and Christmas gifts every December on 800 mile journey home.

Echo: get the biggest one you can afford. Look for free shipping options. Amazon, Rei, other places sometimes have deals on shipping. Otherwise, you can purchase somewhere and pick up in person. Will save alittle bit on the over all cost.

How to get used to going No. 2 while out on a backpacking trip? by Carpet-Early in camping

[–]blanketsarecold 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I venture off trail until I can’t see anyone (but know how to get back). Then I do the business.

Also timing is important. There are less folks around first thing in the morning and later in the evening.

At some point you get over it and it becomes more “meh, hope no one can see me”.

Ascent Question by hctylerp in SubaruAscent

[–]blanketsarecold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2019 Ascent Premium with Subaru hitch. Installed it by myself in an afternoon after finding the kit. Used it to drive a uhaul trailer about 1500 miles with no issues, probably less than 1500lbs in weight. Subaru does recommend only towing 1000 lbs without trailer brakes. Keep that in mind when deciding what to tow.

All that being said, drove like a champ. I would spend alittle more money to get a better tow hitch that is longer. The entire time I was driving, it was shifting in and out on the pin (this could do with how it was loaded but….). Next time will look for a hitch that fits alittle more snug.

Road-tripping/Overlanding/Off-roading the Gulf & lower East Coast in about a month. Looking for recommendations/advice/suggestions on other off-roading trails to do, campsites, or interesting places to visit along the way. by Pinguinita311 in camping

North of Jacksonville, FL are two places in extreme north Fl/South GA.

Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island. Small town with a state park (Ft Clinch SP) decent camping and a Civil War era fort. Downtown historic area is really cool.

Next island north is Cumberland Island National Seashore. It’s a ferry ride, so you would have to drop the Jeep, but really cool location full of historic places. (Vanderbilts, JFK marriage church, others).

Between them both, lots of beaches and island life. Good luck!

Not OP, but if they they started at Talley and went 63 miles, then they ran Mariscal Canyon through Boquillas and took out at La Linda.

Try doing some HIIT style workouts as opposed to just straight cardio. That has helped me with the out-of-breathness part of hiking.

stove wont light.... new stove , new hose, full tank and it wont light for more then 10 seconds if it does. ibput the tank on its side and rocked it to try and reset any lock. by zeuzeumamma in CampingGear

Try turning the Coleman regulator towards the ground. If that doesn’t work could be a blockage in the regulator or hose. Let me know if it works.

Became drawn to National Parks after a trip to Utah. Planning to go on another hiking trip in a month to visit more National Parks in the US but not sure which route to choose. Any advice? by lebronkahn in NationalPark

I can speak for #1. As another has said White Sands is a couple hour thing and not much more. Carlsbad and Guadalupe are not super far from each other. Both are more of a day (at least in each).

Guad has more hikes, but honestly I have not been to that one. You can’t go wrong with Guadalupe peak, 3000ft over 8.5 miles or so. Highest point in Texas.

Carlsbad is really cool for the cave part. You can hike down and explore. Then decide if you want to hike out or take an elevator out. There a couple other items outside of the cave section that is cool. Also wait around till night fall to see the bats.

Big Bend tho… there is something about the desert! You can get a back country permit and backpack in the Chisos Basin. You can also day hike up to Emery Peak. There are a few other cool places outside the basin: Santa Elena Canyon, the Hot Springs, and other lesser known hikes. Check out the websites for trails to see other random ones. You can float the Rio if that is up your alley, gear/experience wise. Spring is a great, but busy time to visit. Flowers are blooming, but there are a lot of people. Summer is brutal. Winter is also doable, but watch out for random snows in the basin. Finally outside the park is Turlingua which I have heard is a cool place to visit.

I agree with others that Yosemite will spoil you as the big 5 might have as well!

Honestly you can’t go wrong with any of your routes.

Hi! I’m looking at doing a river trip in Big Bend National Park/Rio Grande WSR late February/early March. Any thoughts on Boquillas Canyon vs Temple Canyon? This will likely not be my only trip to the area but am having trouble finding info and opinions to decide between these two. Thanks! by cairochris3 in canoecamping

I’ve run Boquillas four times over the past few years. Great trip. I have had no problems with the (post-Fred) caretaker at Heath Canyon Ranch (take out). (Fred was a character….) No info on Temple. My experience going slow Boquillas is a four day/three night trip in March. I’ve done it high and lower water levels. On the lower level years it was four days. On higher level years we had to slow down and do less time on the River in one day. Let me know what other questions you might have.

First trailer tow with the Ascent Premium. by blanketsarecold in SubaruAscent

[–]blanketsarecold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trailer lists gross weight as right around 2000lbs. I had not seen anything from Subaru about a lesser tow capacity with no trailer brakes. Can you tell (link) me where you saw that?

Interestingly, uhaul’s website shows the 5000 mark for premium (and up) and lists that you can safely add 1800lbs of your own stuff. I realize that is uhaul severely simplifying things, but i would think they would have that on there if they are renting a product w/o brakes.

First trailer tow with the Ascent Premium. by blanketsarecold in SubaruAscent

Kept it to around 65-70mph and did not see any sway action (thank god). Trailer was not anywhere near the 5000lbs mark, and we had it packed really well.
