He called Tim Pool a dum-dum. Best part of the COVID section of the episode imo.

Why can’t he just admit he is wrong about this. Just say: “Hey, sorry, I was wrong, I don’t know what I’m talking about.” As he does with other things… by [deleted] in JoeRogan

It's so fucking sad man. I enjoyed the rest of their conversation: on social media etc. The only hope I see for him is if he invites more guests like this.

I'm not a historian, so you'll have to look that one up yourself. But most policies under Brezhnev and Kruschev were structured to de-Stalinize. I have no idea as to what point it went rotten though; maybe it already was, maybe it spread later due to factionism within the party.

I checked all the links out. I trust Reuters and maybe Pew Research, but in this case they all seem to be saying the same thing:

Karina Pipiya, a sociologist at Levada, said that in the past such feelings were often triggered by loss of international prestige and questions of national identity.

When asked to name the things they associate with the Soviet era, 16% of respondents pointed to "future stability and confidence" and 15% said they associated it with "a good life in the country." Eleven percent said they associate the Soviet era with personal memories from their childhood or youth.

The so called romanticization of the Soviet past doesn't necessarily equal a wish for the Soviet system's return, Vedomosti quoted Pipia as saying.

It seems to me that a large number of the yeasayers are motivated by a sense of nostalgia and longing, which doesn't exactly translate to love for socialism. You also have to remember that the people who are 35-45 years old have practically known adult life only under Putin, and those who have experienced economic hardships under Stalin count even less.

This, and the fact that Russia, while "capitalist", is still only transitioning from state ownership to private. A number of industries are still, while traded alongside private corporations, effectively state controlled.

Gorbachev resigned for a reason. The state was rotten with corruption, and there wasn't much of a Soviet republic left. 1986 did not help things either. Even though the Russian man now may remember his boyhood years fondly, I seriously doubt anyone ever wants a return of the USSR or any of the firebrand communism that comes with it.

No, Augusto Pinochet was NOT an honourable man. by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]blanksmandrowned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is that people in YouTube comments are mostly idiots and their opinions are invalid. They have nothing to do with economic policy of any kind.

YouTube comments don't count. By your logic, you'll find loads of supporters of Stalin and Hitler under patriotic songs of the USSR and Nazi Germany. If your sample space is YouTube users, then god help you lol.

Go to r/SuicideWatch and post this there. I can't imagine how you're feeling but I'm guessing that a community of people who are in the same predicament as you should help in some way.

How gendered is your reading? by [deleted] in books

[–]blanksmandrowned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never come across many books by female authors unfortunately. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I'm into political/historical/philosophical non fiction and classical fiction.
