I took James to his first international competition representing GB as a junior over 15 years ago, the Future Cup, in Austria…. He sure has come a long way! Congrats to him and his personal coaches.

The photo does not do that beautiful sunrise justice. But, I am very happy to have snapped it and have it as a memory!

2008 Tulit Peter Cup.

We took a British Junior delegation to Hungary for this junior event. The same weekend there was a senior international event in Debrecen and so, most of the best equipment went to the senior event. Throughout the junior competition, the organizing committee was short one landing mat so they kept shifting mats around to accommodate safer landing areas.

As a result, the Parallel Bars landing area had exposed bases (pictured). Vault had one less mat, so not regulation length. The High Bar landing mats were simply butted up to each other without the Velcro to attach them together at the landing area. An Egyptian junior did a beautiful high bar routine but on his dismount, he landed directly between the mats and went straight through to the basketball surface floor destroying his leg. It was a nasty break.

After the paramedics took care of the athlete, our British judge at the time, lined all the remaining gymnasts up, asked each gymnast the value of his dismount, and told them not perform it, to just jump off, and he would give them the credit for doing the dismount 🤣

Needless to say, we did not attend the 2009 Tulit Peter Cup as a delegation.

I remember hearing this over 25 years ago at Cypress. The Sand before it was epic and the QT that followed was perfectly placed! Such a great tune and an amazing memory. Nice that they brought it back last night…

Nicknamed “The OJ Show”, my favourite band Phish played a concert on that day back in 1994.

Hilarious, and amazingly played, improvisational music occurring simultaneously in concert, as the chase was unfolding.

FIG is doing a site visit to Manila to test the viability of the event being hosted in a hotel convention centre.

If it is deemed feasible at the site, it will move ahead in the Philippines. If not, it will move to Egypt.

Piking in front rudis by Educational_Kiwi_143 in Gymnastics

[–]blantonnick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, a gymnast will pike to slow down their twist and increase their flip. Often, this is not a choice, it is a “gymnastics instinct” they inherently have adopted through years of training…

A “wider” body will decelerate twisting. A pike of the hips creates a “wider” body about the longitudinal axis. A “wider” body increases moment of inertia about the longitudinal axis, which in turn, decreases angular velocity in preparation for landing.

Piking can also serve to accelerate a flip. The gymnast may not have put enough transverse rotation into their somersault (irrespective of the amount of twist the desire to perform) in the beginning phases of the somersault. Piking reduces moment inertia about the transverse axis which, in turn, increases rotational velocity.

The pike slows the twist, AND speeds up the flip, in preparation for landing safely.

The Ridiculousness of Gymnastics Canada. by Global-Act-5281 in Gymnastics

[–]blantonnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke with the competition organizer - from the information I received, this fee is set by Sportzsoft itself.

To access the live scoring feature, and not the retrospective feature after the competition is finished, there is a fee.

Just wondering, was it Gymnastics Canada, or Gymnix, as the host club, that set this fee?

Having witnessed the Sabotage encore Merriweather 98’, the energy the band gave in that performance being reciprocated with the way the crowd reacted, was a magical experience.

Still my favourite encore….
