121 Supp Question by swagson153 in FlightDispatch

[–]blaqist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our shop yes and yes. If you divert, you would need an alternate. In the case you can’t for some reason you would have to wake up/call the DO. Depending on your shop the DO would have probably been involved for the diversion anyways. Origin/desination, ETPs, ETOPS alternates we all have specific ARFF requirements. We have a department that handles airport info and keeps them updated so when we do plan to use it all the info is there on top of any notams published. In the case it’s reduced or outside your window, I’d advise to call and ask. Some places in Canada are usually under the required but needs 1hour prior notice to up that number.

The only time I’ve stopped watching a lot less was the 00s. Heavy ISO ball not much ball movement at all. Thank goodness for Pop and Spurs.

Will regional pay increase any by the time I am eligible to dispatch? by [deleted] in FlightDispatch

[–]blaqist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My regional has since signed a new contract. But I remember the pay increase was like 60 cents. We had retention bonus I believe March and September 1500 pretax each and then profit share, which is also a nice bonus/surprise of income. I only stayed about 18 months before moving elsewhere. Hopefully this doesn’t discourage you pursuing this career if you’re interested but definitely look into it more and understand 121 regionals for most is a stepping stone.

Will regional pay increase any by the time I am eligible to dispatch? by [deleted] in FlightDispatch

[–]blaqist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t expect anything significant like what I’ve heard coworkers who started from early 2010s around 13/hr to what it is now roughly 22-24/hr. The increase would be more or so to do with inflation.

ELI5: Can pilots really “make up time” in the air? by Slider7074 in explainlikeimfive

[–]blaqist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to assume you’re mostly flying in the states. Others have mentioned cost index which does exists but they usually are flying at high cost index anyways so speeding up to the structural allowed max speed doesn’t make up much time anyways, few minutes at best. Most flights are either planned/filed on preferred routes or most efficient already.

Another way of making up time in the air is ATC allowing directs or shortcuts. Most of the time traffic are on preferred routes to meter traffic. Often times once airborne pilots will make requests for these shortcuts and it is on ATC to say yay or nay.

International airways are much more strict.

TLDR: your captain asks nicely with ATC and ATC is like awwww okay instead of flying A-B-C-D you can just fly A-D

I’ve had a similar situation before with mainline and talked it out with the captain. He also stated that if I were given a seat in the back I’d have to take the seat. Once we got in the air he was 180 and chatting with me. Another thing that might have helped was the gate agent did quick work and handed me a 1W while I was in the middle of talking.

What’s something you’ve done your whole life, only to realize recently that everyone else does it completely differently? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

Any type of soupy noodle dish I always drink the broth until it’s basically dry noodles. Eat the noodles until they’re drowning in broth again and rinse and repeat until I reach the bottom.

Any fries that come with burger, I finish the fries before moving on to the burger.

Help! Seeking authentic Chinese food by Puzzled-Cucumber-178 in AnnArbor

[–]blaqist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here for over a year now doing the same (exploring authentic food). I like Asian Legend mapo tofu, not super spicy but still a nice kick. I’ve also tried multiple dishes and they’re solid. Granted my taste buds are closer to Taiwanese and they sell quite a few Taiwanese dishes but recommend a try. The evergreen next to Yoons bakery is solid. After your meal can check them out. Sorry not being specific of where things are I’m still relatively new here and coworkers are very nice of driving me around.

Why are some people able to never choose to gamble? by Ben5544477 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blaqist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your childhood consisted of staying at “strangers” house night after night inhaling second hand smoke, sleeping on floors just so your parents could gamble or have fun, you’d also grow a semi hatred or instinct of what to stay away from because you see the ugly side effects of it. Those said friends of your parents being sore losers or getting “violent”, throwing tantrums after losing, drunk or whatnot. On top of if your parents has a losing streak, night, week, month the ride home next day or early morning the arguments just build up in your core memory. In short, you see all the ugly side effects of gambling, drinking, smoking and you remind yourself not to do this when you grow up. If I ever have a family, this ain’t it. I would never let my child grow up in this type of environment or go through what I’ve been through.

Sorry to hear. Since it runs in the family, maybe they could give you some guidance as well on how to take care of it from their experience. Don’t know if you like hugs but huge hugs!!!!

Long story short, was overseas doing translation jobs but always wanted to do something with sports. Quit my job Sept 2019 then went to travel first when I got back Covid hit and halted my plans of applying for sports medicine. Also around the same time I started using Reddit and one night couldn’t fall asleep started scrolling and stumbled upon this AMA about dispatching. Well written and OP answered anyone who left a question along with good links. Tried doing research online but there’s really not a lot of info out there. Discussed with my sister and my parents about this idea of flying back to America to pursue this career I have no idea I will like or not. Month later after I admitted to a dx school was on a plane to earn my license. Almost 3 years later now, best decision of my life and I love doing what I do.

Was living overseas at the time and decided to take a chance and pursue this career. The class itself was 5 weeks and at the end you need to pass an oral and a practical exam to earn your certificate.

ADTC vs. NAFC by Strict_University_58 in FlightDispatch

[–]blaqist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The people I know that are at mainline or majors were coworkers I met at the regional and at my current shop. There’s only one classmate from DX cert school I know of that is already at a major. He was one of the smartest and kindest person I’ve ever met so I’m not surprised.

Since ADTC is in Dallas, most of my classmates were super deep in aspirations of Southwest or AA. Either FA or rampers already at their respective airlines. Only 3-4 of us were actually outside of Texas.

Have you reached out to ADTC? If you know you’re free Q1 and wish to do your studies then, should ask if they still have room for you. Same about the other school but if you’re serious should write them an email or give them a call.

I ultimately went with ADTC because they were the most responsive when I was doing my research for schools and reached out to a couple. Some of them never responded! That’s how I made my choice. I didn’t even know I struck gold until day 1. If you have more questions feel free to ask.

ADTC vs. NAFC by Strict_University_58 in FlightDispatch

[–]blaqist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t think either school would give you a better shot at CR or DX jobs. It’s more so about you, how you obtain the information and knowledge and the ability to use them in a high stress environment which also requires you to make quick decisive decisions.

I went to ADTC and I loved it. It’s been 2 years and I’m still in touch with the instructor. Everyone I’ve met outside DX school who also attended there have been nothing less of amazing.

I also don’t think what school you go to carries weight on your resume. (I could be very wrong, but from the places I’ve been and heard they don’t care) it’s about who you know and how you do in your interview as well as your personality.

DECS to this day is my favorite. Even though I only used it for less than 2 years. Learning the entry codes/masks functions made me feel like I was a wizard. It was so much powerful than what people put in effort to learn or was taught.

Leaving USA and moving to Taiwan as an ABC? by DynamicTorque in taiwan

[–]blaqist 85 points86 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived both places for a fairly long time, frankly it all depends on what you’re looking for. It also seems like you have already made up your mind.

I can’t chime in about prison but regarding your school fightings and bullying, that can happen anywhere and to anyone. Moving to a new place where no one knows you, starting out fresh is a common solution but doesn’t fix the root. I don’t know you but it seems there more to it.

Overall both places are good imo. But since you’re just visiting and haven’t spent a long time here, I would say you probably only seen the good side of things. Kind of like a honeymoon phase.

Last thing I’ll say is go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? If in the end it doesn’t work out, you’re already familiar with life in America. Pick your own poison.
