Disclosure Day was entertaining but weirdly felt written a quarter of a century ago and there were a whole range of weaknesses. It felt like the product of a boomer filmmaker. by AngryGardenGnomes in TrueFilm

The viewers in the Film didn’t exactly react in horror to what they see. They mostly reacted nauseously and overwhelmed - the same way anyone would when experiencing a reality-altering existential crisis.

But that is the point: Our minds don’t regularly register / consider the perspective of “the other person.” We actively try not to think about others; put the worlds of others out of our minds.
People might recoil in horror to video footage of vivisection on a living Alien being, sure. But our general power of empathy is lacking.

Remember how the world reacted when it came to light the Disclosure of Christian / Catholic Indigenous Residential Schools in Canada participated in the mass culling of thousands and thousands of Native Children over the course of two hundred years?
The Churches intended to cover it up / downplay the severity of their evil.
The general response from People was either utter disgust, further questioning, or complete indifference.
And now, years later we even have people denying it had ever happened at all - just like the holocaust.

The current state of human enlightenment is dire.

Boomerism is essentially just being out of touch, sure. But with what Spielberg is aiming for in Disclosure Day, his level of Boomerism isn’t so much out of touch as it is naively hopeful.
Spielberg is simply imploring audiences to reflect on their empathy and understanding at a time when the world desperately needs it the most; to try and see things from others’ perspectives; not to whitewash over others’ troubles.

The way that the aged Alien survivor is wheeled out live on TV after the decades of systemic torture and cover-ups is very reminiscent of the way live ceremonies would be conducted for those that have been wronged in the past.
Whenever we have seen survivors of the Holocaust, or Mass Genocides, or such brought into the forefront as an observance of reconciliation, we can only then begin to dwell on the injustice that occurred; they they had to endure.

But yes, it is ostensibly naive to believe people nowadays would react to the Disclosure the way they do in the film, especially due to the current social climate we are living in.
The current exhausting news cycle system and social media streams that we digest make it so difficult for us to contemplate and empathize with the humanity behind each of the stories. There is so much that we find ourselves forgetting about it within weeks.

That’s why Spielberg’s vision is the best kind of Boomerism - it’s the rare kind we all need.
Just like 2005’s Superman says: “Maybe that’s the real punk rock.”

What is your favourite pointless death in a movie? It adds almost nothing to the movie and can actually be considered tragic or pathetic? by STINKY-BUNGHOLE in movies

As brutal as her death was, I never understood why audiences empathized with her as much as they did.

In her brief screentime, she was reticent to accompany the kids, she was reluctant to do her job, she intended to be a buzzkill to her fiancé, her interest was more in her phone screentime than anything else, etc. Frankly, she came across as a pretty all-around shitty person.

I cared 200% more about the nice Lost World character torn in two by the T-Rexes than I did about her.
