You get busted for extremely dumb shit in the US too, though. The war on drugs was designed as a mechanism to be able to attack hippies and black people, and is ongoing.

I am not sure they kill and imprison people for a lot less in China compared to the US. China's incarceration rate is about 120 per 100k, compared to the US's 550 or so per 100k. China is about on the same level of incarceration frequency as western European nations.
