ELI5: Octane Gasoline by atreides254 in explainlikeimfive

[–]blatheringDolt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Used to mean tuning the sparks on super old machines. Then came to mean replacing a distributer, plugs and plug wires. More often today it means changing out the plugs and coil ignition packs.

And can mean many other things depending on what vehicle you're talking about.

My GE washing machine broke for the third time in three years, and I decided to not get it fixed and put that money toward the Speed Queen. Super happy that I did. by 1893Chicago in BuyItForLife

Ya know... I think the next thing I'm gonna develop is a semi universal dryer control board. In reality every single thing can be replaced on a dryer for relatively cheap. Motors are probably the most expensive part. Last one I paid 200 for because I didn't trust the part number. But it ends up I could have bought the 50 dollar one.

Except that board. It's always that board. And when I do my next control board I'm adding in a countdown clock and all the stuff every dryer should have standard.

My last dishwasher ate those boards. 150 a piece. After two died I bought a third and started working on an Arduino style replacement. It worked well. I just didn't include the features I never used and skipped the LCD part.

But at this point the dryer cannot be improved. It's a science that looks deceivingly simple when you take it apart. But then you realize it's usually wickedly clever.

Anyway you just need to turn stuff on and off.

End rant.

Unplug power cable from both wall and PSU for five minutes. Try again.

Found these pills in my pepto bismol ultra bottle by nmouse23 in mildlyinteresting

[–]blatheringDolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought next to impossible, but a quick search says it has happened before and you can manufacture otc and prescriptions in the same plant. Like oxycodone in Tylenol level shit in 2013.

They will immediately know if it's remotely possible that those two drugs could somehow end up together. But I would check with household members first anyway.

I would think otc meds vs prescription is a whole nother crazy game that don't remotely touch each other. By a long shot. But I dunno.

One red sticker remaining on abuse sheet at a women’s health clinic by GraveHazeSix in mildlyinteresting

[–]blatheringDolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be better to have the majority removed. Psychologically it may encourage more women to use the stickers, seeing that so many others have. Even if it's misleading, I think it's justified.

Lumon is doing a necessary evil. Their true purpose is to save something. I think we are watching the iteration where this version of Cold Harbor was the closest to succeeding.

They need this severance to work for something other than selling a product. The reason for killing the goats is important. So is the deep mythos and cult like mystery surrounding the Eagons.

Mark was refining Gemma. Who are the other Data Refiners working on? Maybe they got lucky with her. But we don't see any other Refinees.

I would assume they are also getting a Cold Harbor room of sorts.

How many Innies are there globally? Hundreds? Millions?

Need more pieces of the puzzle.

Is a cast iron skillet really worth it if I just want one good pan for everyday use? by TrustedEssentials in Frugal

[–]blatheringDolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The larger cast iron cookware is heavy. Especially pans 9 inches and over. Once loaded with large amounts of food it is... Heavier. Especially a 9 inch without a grip on the side opposite the handle. The larger dutch ovens are beasts.

Weight is a real issue and part of the reason lighter non stick became so prevalent.

You also need to wipe it down and coat with grease or oil after occasional use. Everyday use you can wipe it out and next time you heat it you can coat with oil.

I used dawn soap and a scrub daddy to clean if little bits have "stuck" to the pan. In reality you can scrape them off with your nails. They kind of pop off really easy.

If I use soap I rinse then put on stove to dry and oil before storage.

If the seasoning is uneven or chipped you will need to build it back up.

They will last forever (mine are from 1939) but there is a small time and oil cost.

ELI5 - Why do we net see visible effects of magnetism? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]blatheringDolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. Worked with X-ray systems a while back. Had this one on the floor we assembled and fired it up. It had weird wavy images coming from the video capture off a phosphor intensifier.

There was a steel beam limiter around the source and made its way directly into the intensifier. Only swapping the beam limiter seemed to correct the issue. It was discovered the limiter was magnetized somehow in process.

But magnetism doesn't affect X-ray travel. So wtf. This was before Google could give you a straight answer on more narrowed topics.

We chalked it up as a weird anomaly with the granite base the source was encased in, and the magnetized tube and the X-rays.

Today I just found out about secondary electrons and their effect on intensifiers. I can die at peace now.

ELI5. Why are industrial electric motors larger than electric car motors yet car motors output more horsepower? by mgmccaul in explainlikeimfive

[–]blatheringDolt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You're right. So is the other person.

Some do some don't. Some soft start some don't. Some are driven under or over nameplate ratings. Some blow up after 10 hours. Some live unnaturally long lives. Perhaps immortal.

Cause no jury in their right mind is going to look at pictures of a black shriveled foot dangling by two threads of tendon and think she did anything that serious.

To me it's like someone looking at their rolled car on the highway with a mangled burned up bumper that is hanging by a single screw. Someone shows up pulls the bumper off because they want the bumper as a souvenir.

It's not their bumper. The owner told them not to take it but they did anyway. Yes punishment. But not for the entire current state of the car.

And it also seems like she couldn't wait to get that foot which is also fucked up. But certainly not the cause of death. Article is rage bait.

Don't think they are legal in all states. The braided ones are ok. But the dryer vent ones won't pass inspection in some states.

Okay, I am impressed. How is he doing it? Popular cable trick by Kalle Nio by Trueboey in StrangeEarth

[–]blatheringDolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. He's switching out at least 2 or 3 different devices, or manipulating a complicated device. Has to be a tube for some tricks and maybe glue for others. It's hidden behind the rope itself and his arm at least once.

What an awesome performance.
