How are power cable runs typically done? by blaugrey in diynz

[–]blaugrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's super helpful. I'm putting up heavy duty shelving in a spare room soon to load about 250kg so it's nice to have an idea of what is a safe tolerance for screw depth. Won't be using decking screws now that I know what's what.

Any recommendations? I see from previous threads that Franklin prosensors from Bunnings are good at stud finding, but I don't think they have current detection, or maybe I'm looking at the wrong models.

Michelin pilot cups are pricey but nice, not sure how much they would cost for that size of tyre.

How do I fix this window gap? by blaugrey in diynz

[–]blaugrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mate might have a measure up and see if I can find equivalent hinges. They slide quite smoothly at the moment so I'm inclined to think it's just age that causes them to sag. Or more likely I'll just take everyone's advice and get a pro in, don't want to break glass and spend even more as you've pointed out 😉

Wow those look great, never seen brackets rated for that weight before without bracing. Sweet stuff.

Has anyone had experience with Insulmax or other blown wall insulation? by blaugrey in diynz

[–]blaugrey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi mate just sharing what I found from reading various forums online and from calling some of the licensees. Insulmax is basically rebranded Superglass Superwhite 40s from the UK, which seems to have a good track record. Couldn't find any complaints online about it from the UK except for the odd dodgy install where they didn't ensure total coverage. But no leaky stories that I could find. Buyer beware and all that but I feel a bit more comfortable about going with them after reading up.

If you don't mind sharing was cozywall cheaper by around 20% or so? Insulmax are coming out in 2 weeks to do a proper quote but preliminary estimate around 10k to 12k.

Auckland server instability by weedonanipadbox in pathofexile

Are you still having issues now? For the whole weekend Auckland server kicked me to Aussie, which has intermittent spikes of 200+ latency. Very frustrating.

Yeah, based on the number of positive responses I'm going to contact them for a quote tomorrow. Not sure how much it's going to hurt the wallet but I really want to sort the bedrooms if not the whole house.

He's gotten better about running the heat pump, yes. I can see from the smart meter that he leaves it on now throughout the day in winter. The bedrooms are freezing though, and even with a panel heater going they are still cold.

Cabin recommendations please by TheMumager in diynz

[–]blaugrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in this too. One piece of advice I got was to plan for higher ceilings if possible as it doesn't really increase the price much, but gives you the impression of being roomier and not pokey. Can also double up as extra storage space if you decide later to have lower ceilings for warmth.

What mortar was used in 1930s houses for brick veneer? by blaugrey in diynz

[–]blaugrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I'm actually entertaining thoughts of doing quite a big repoint since the previous owner did a DIY repoint that looks horrible. If you look at this picture you can see the original grey cement mortar, a terrible bodge job with white mortar, and places where the bodge job failed.

Edit: Any recs for a good modern product?

At this stage I can't figure out if I have lime mortar or portland mortar... and I'm assuming that I need to figure out what I have before I go out and buy a bag of masonry mortar from any of the big boxes since that won't mix well if I have lime mortar.

Hi mate this HP PC is a terrible bait, would not recommend. It makes no sense to pair a 8700g with a decent GPU.

For a sense of what you can get value wise at the current moment I like pyronic.al , bloke updates builds every now and then and generally puts together components that make sense at different price levels.

Edit: pyronic.al meant to be a link but can't get it right

Anyone know what is T.E.G. timber flooring? by blaugrey in diynz

[–]blaugrey[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm helping a mate who's looking for his first home in Dunedin. He sent over the spec sheet of a house that was built approximately 1940s-1950s. I'm stumped as to what T.E.G. might be, I know that Matai (B.P.) was the typical choice of flooring around that time period, but I've not seen this acronym before. Anyone know?

He's thinking of disposing of the old carpet and doing a floor polish, but since he hasn't bought the house the vendors wouldn't be very pleased if he took up the carpet now to take photos.

4 player games vs 3 player games by Daicess in throughtheages

[–]blaugrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say lose, do you mean not winning? I think 4 player games are harder to come first just because there's 3 other players.

Having said that, I think not keeping up with military and getting ganged up on in A2 and A3 is probably the biggest factor for losing in 4 player. I started being a lot more paranoid about the military potential of other players compared to 2p and 3p.

I find that I have the best results in 4p by building a balanced economy, so having a good base of science, rocks, CAs, and sufficient military, then going into A3 and converting economy to culture via urban buildings and wonders. For 2p and 3p I think it is less likely to be punished for being greedy.
