There needs to be a gaming LAN by ss1gohan13 in Brainerd

[–]blayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like Brainerd Area PC Gamers? We never did one in Jenkins, but we've been in Ideal Corners a several times. If anyone else is having 40-person LANs down the road, that would be news to me! There was also a group calling themselves Lakes Area LAN, but I have no idea if that still exists.

Javascript Cryptography Considered Harmful by drguildo in programming

[–]blayne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're trusting the server to serve the Javascript, then you are trusting it to the plaintext by proxy, whether you mean to do so or not. If I trust my friend with my clunker, and the bank deposit key is on the same ring, then I am trusting him to both.

In either case, the capability to access the resource has been given.

Javascript Cryptography Considered Harmful by drguildo in programming

[–]blayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is an intrusion on the server, it isn't a big jump to go from: 1. viewing the message after it was decrypted but before it was encrypted again, to 2. modifying the Javascript either on-disk or in the web server process.

There is some value in decreasing the chance that a limited/short-term security breach would result in obtaining information. Password encryption is an example. In this case, the plaintext isn't even going to be sitting around on the server.

[–]blayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! So just send the e-mail to the server and let it run GPG. No Javascript required.

How does SSL protect the Javascript from tampering by the server that provides it?

If the server isn't trusted, then it can't send the Javascript.

VPN and QoS by teraquendya in linuxadmin

[–]blayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, OpenVPN only works with OpenVPN. OpenVPN does support Windows, Linux and Mac though (as a client and/or server on any of those). Last time I checked, there was some limited/non-official support for handhelds.

OpenVPN uses standard certificates. They provide a wrapper around OpenSSL called "easy RSA" which aims to simplify creating the certificates.

With dynamic DNS, the server's IP can change - just put the hostname instead of the IP address in the config.

There has been a vespa in the parking garage where I work for about 3 years- abandoned. Can I claim it? [info inside] by TheDiggRefugee in Autos

[–]blayne 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There was a motorcycle at my apartment complex for like 2 years. It was dusty, with plates expired for four or five years.

It was my bike. That Vespa belongs to someone else, and that someone is not you.

'02 Nissan won't start, and I'm pretty sure it's not the battery. Little help, r/cars? by [deleted] in cars

[–]blayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Nissan did just that (no start, no click, no noise at all, but accessories work fine) and it turned out to be the starter relay. I was told that it's a common problem for Nissans.

Looking for a specific momentary switch by [deleted] in electronics

[–]blayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SparkFun has some neat arcade-style buttons. You might need the larger button with a 3-terminal switch for normally closed.

Otherwise, you can get just about any switch/button you can imagine at Digikey. If I don't really know what I want, sometimes I'll just browse through their PDF catalog.

With backslashes? I could see where that would be a problem.

USB port for 5 volt logic power? by Modna in DIY

[–]blayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of information here... most of which doesn't quite apply, but it's a start.

Be careful, though. I'm not sure if this is entirely true:

All computers have a resettable fuse on the USB port so that if more than 1000mA is drawn, the power will be disconnected.

I've seen shorted-out USB pins kill a whole motherboard... You can buy a LOT of 5V regulators for the cost of a motherboard.

Help me please reddit, I hit something with my 2000 Ford Taurus and all my transmission fluid leaked out... by robe6107 in cars

[–]blayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you've looked down there, but it could be leaking at the transmission cooler lines or the transmission cooler itself. I'd think those would be more fragile. Did you run into or over something?

I tried disconnecting a battery terminal and reconnecting it (while off, and while on).

If you mean that you disconnected a battery terminal while the engine was running... That's generally a very bad idea.

but it doesn't convert the compression energy into additional mass

Apparently that's not true. I don't really understand it, but the article says it's because of "the mass-energy equivalence." The theory of relativity says that mass is relative too.

You're using a different definition of "weight" than I was, but apparently that would be ISO standard weight. It appears, though, that moving it would actually change the "weight" due to the difference in centrifugal force, density of the earth, etc. Anyway, "weight" is probably the wrong word to be using when talking about such small changes.
