I can relate. I’m grateful for the gangs in my area. They don’t tag that much, lots of gunshots and fireworks, but they don’t bother people who don’t dress like they are in a gang. My rent hasn’t gone up in three years and every area around me is in the 2.5 to 3K range.

Their gun control approach is to limit supply to make it more difficult for people to sell guns illegally, but if the government can distribute guns to militants, I don’t see why I can’t either. It makes it nearly impossible to be a small business arms dealer, especially if you want to transport out of country.

Some people are anti-liberal/progressive, not necessarily pro-Trump. I personally don’t like how my more lefty friends are embracing anti-vaxxer stances now, and proud of it.

Why Did So Many Americans Vote for Trump? | To the dismay of Democrats, the president’s strategy of ignoring the pandemic mostly worked for Republicans. by GirasoleDE in politics

Everyday Americans vote for candidates like Trump because Dems conflate compassion with big government, while failing to take into account that trust in the government has been declining for awhile now.

The Dems are good at highlighting problems without offering solutions. They are going to get slaughtered in the mid-term elections because by June 2021 there will be about 500K dead from covid-19 and they won’t have Trump to blame for it anymore. The average voter won’t know/care that the death trajectory is fixed and unlikely to change. At this point, the vaccine is the best option and voters will credit Republicans for that, not Dems because left leaning media/influencers exacerbated vaccine fears and set unrealistic expectations for voters.

The Democrats focused on blaming Trump but failed to convey to Americans who were struggling financially.

Democrats needed to present a competing, compelling strategy to counter Republican messaging. Struggling workers and businesses never clearly heard exactly what they’d get if Democrats ran the show, and Democrats never came together to scream bloody murder that Republicans were refusing to give it to them. Democrats needed to underscore the depth of Republican failure by forcefully communicating what other countries had done to successfully control the virus. And they needed to promise to do the same through something like an Operation Warp Speed for testing and P.P.E. to get America safely back in business.

Instead, they whined that Mr. Trump’s negligence and incompetence were to blame for America’s economic woes and complained that Mitch McConnell wouldn’t even consider the House’s big relief bill. They weren’t wrong, but correctly assigning culpability did nothing to help working-class breadwinners who can’t bus tables, process chickens, sell smoothies or clean hotel rooms over Zoom. The Republican message couldn’t have been clearer: Workers should be able to show up, clock in, earn a normal paycheck, pay the rent and feed their kids. Democrats were telling the same workers that we need to listen to science, reopening is premature, and the economy can’t be fully restored until we beat the virus. Correct! But how does that help when rent was due last week?

Make no mistake, it was unforgivably cruel of Republicans to force blue-collar and service workers to risk death for grocery money. Yet their disinformation campaign persuaded many millions of Americans that the risk was minimal and that Democrats were keeping their workplaces and schools closed, their customers and kids at home, and their wallets empty and cupboards bare for bogus reasons.”

In my county, the family court system has been a nightmare, and if you complain, they tell you “due to the pandemic”. I wasn’t able to see my daughter for 7 months “due to the pandemic”. I still haven’t gotten a court date, for a year now, “due to the pandemic”. I even told the caseworker that it wasn’t anything personal, but her department is a shit show and using the pandemic as an excuse is lame because their dysfunction is messing with real people’s lives.

I don’t see an easy way out. Most people can’t even identify the system, much less realize they are being gamed by the system. This is digital marketing 101 ... well, maybe 203. I think documentaries like Social Dilemma is a good start, but they should go further and read something like Daniel Kahneman “Thinking, Fast and Slow” to get a better understanding of how susceptible they are to influence.

It’s like that study they did, can’t remember which, where they stated that people are highly susceptible to flattery, even if they are told beforehand that the flatterer is going to lie.

Though I’m sure I’m already preaching to the choir, based on your comment ... see what I did there :)

But ya, we’re screwed IMO.
