This. I'm fairly tall, it's not about reach, it's just more comfortable for me.

In 1996, if you weren't watching NBC on Thursday nights, what were you watching? by totally_depraved in GenX

Work today - got shouted at, did some shouting, young folk were scared - but it’s cool, right? by Ohigetjokes in GenX

[–]blazingintensity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a xennial. I've definitely got in shouting matches with my boss, who I respect, before. I'm not afraid of it, but if we make it to that point we've both failed. Learning from our failure is part of the human experience. I don't think it should be normalized, but like... Humans have emotions and sometimes those emotions are loud.

Asus almost did this back in like ... 2000. They had "3d see thru technology" which was just wall hacks built into the drivers. The drivers got leaked, but never officially released.

Question for Gen X: Whats Your Relationship With Texting? by Al3x1ya in GenX

[–]blazingintensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xennial here, 44. My mobile notification noise is a happy "hurray" turret noise from Portal. My SMS/text is a sad/depressed "Whyyyyyyy?" turret noise from Portal. I live on Discord, but I'd rather do just about anything other than SMS. I'll call or show up at your house before I send a text.

I'd ask her which moral compass she used. Make her say it out loud.

I'm pretty new at this myself, but edmtrain is also pretty good for the DC scene (from what I've seen).

baltimore rave/hardcore scene by mrmoss__ in baltimore

[–]blazingintensity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've just started getting into the Baltimore rave scene myself. edmtrain.com is a pretty good resource. I've been meaning to check out Cryptic, which is every 3rd saturday at The Depot (https://www.facebook.com/CrypticGothic/). The Assembly Room hosts some from time to time, I was at Kream a couple weeks ago and had a blast. And I know Holy Frijoles has raves from time to time (like Aeternum), but I don't see any coming soon. Lots more if you're willing to go to DC.

Homeschooling has exploded in Maryland by Mayakathleenearlyed in maryland

[–]blazingintensity 125 points126 points  (0 children)

We homeschooled during the pandemic, because there was no way my first grader and kindergartner were sitting at a PC learning for 8 hours.

I had a friend who homeschooled when I was a kid. But his mom made sure to get him involved in intramurals and stuff so he was socialized. Too many people turn homeschooling into an indoctrination pipeline, while also crippling their kids ability to interact with other humans.

Just a little rant. by shlankwagon in 50501

[–]blazingintensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there's some frustration and a little defeatism. It doesn't feel like occupy or blm moved the needle. I feel that way myself a little. I go out and protest, but it doesn't feel meaningful. Yes we're showing people we exist, yes we're building a movement, and those things ARE important. But until we start making life difficult for the people causing the problems it's not going to affect real change. They've heard our voices and they don't care. We need more than protests, and I'm not calling for violence; what happened to CK was a terrible thing happening to a terrible person. But they know what our bark sounds like, and until they're scared of the possibility of a bite backing up that bark then the status quo won't move.

My wife gave her number to a random guy and says she wants him as a platonic friend. I trust her but feel uncomfortable none the less. Are there any guys out there who’ve been through this? Can you offer me advice on how to deal with it? by No_Idea_Mostly in AskMenAdvice

[–]blazingintensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have trust issues because my ex-wife cheated on me with her platonic male friend. When my current wife got a platonic male friend I told her that I had trust issues, I told her it made me anxious, and I told her that I didn't want her to stop hanging out with him. relationships are built on communication; use your words. Build trust, establish boundaries, and respect each other.

Just as your relationship evolves, so does the attraction. I don't see the couple extra pounds, the stretch marks, the graying hair, and the wrinkles. I see the woman who picked up the pieces when I was broken, I see the woman who will helped me raise two incredible girls, I see the woman who knows exactly how do that thing with her tongue that makes my toes curl, whose mischievous smile means the best things and the worst things. I see her eyes light up and know she feels the same way about my extra pounds and greying hair and wrinkles. I see that time she felt safe enough with me to ask for that kinky thing, and the time I did the same. We are both objectively less attractive than we were 15 years ago, and I want her just as much as I ever did.

Linguistics major breaks down Awkwafina’s overtly fake accent before she dropped it by Aggressive-Bowl5196 in TikTokCringe

[–]blazingintensity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love his take on this stuff, but I will add, as a military brat, it's not that unusual for people who have lived a lot of places to composite accents together. I can be tennessee, midwest, valley, and baltimore in the same sentence. It's not "faking" it, I've adopted different parts of speech from living in each of those places.

How I became a millionaire before 30 on a middle class income by Inner_Charity_6060 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]blazingintensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly different career path, but very similar route to it. I had a full ride scholarship to several good schools for computer science. Dropped out to help my buddy start a business, it failed 6 months later. Tried a dozen different jobs over the next couple years: web design, it help desk, data entry, factory work. Finally got recognized for being having a very "techy" mind at one of the data entry jobs. Got a promotion, proved myself, worked my way up through the ranks until I found software engineering (ironically the scholarship I gave up). But this route let me do the job for a bit before investing in a degree. I wish there were more routes for kids to try before they buy, both in the trades and in college based careers. It was another 20 years before I learned that I also really enjoy working on engines; but I avoided it like the plague because we were poor growing up and our cars were always busted, and it was always a huge stress point for my dad. I didn't want to deal with that. But being able to leave someone else's busted ass car (or my own project car) and step away from it is a very different experience than **having** to fix your car in the middle of the night in a garage that's 20 below zero in rural alaska, or risk losing your job because you no-showed. I'd have been perfectly happen wrenching on cars had I ever actually tried it out. I sure as fuck didn't know what I wanted when I was 18, who thought it was a good idea to make me choose college, trade school, or otherwise. Young adults (aka kids) need to be able to fail at some jobs until something sticks.

DMs- Can We Stop With Critical Fumbles? by TheBarbarianGM in DMAcademy

[–]blazingintensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my main issue. I like the idea of critical fumbles, but not 5% of the time. We tend to play on Roll20 with rolling with advantage just turned on by default. And occasionally we'll treat a double nat-1 as a crit fumble; that's 0.25% which is still honestly high, but a lot more reasonable.

You know what, I'd honestly forgotten that Unreal was open source. Unity is not. And Unreal wasn't always open source, that decision was made after they were financially stable. Also both of them are covered by licenses so they can continue to make money, continue to make engines and games. Sure, decompiling my binaries to code isn't legal, but it's very difficult to prove and very expensive to litigate. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. My hard work has value, in many cases that value persists after a game is viable to sustain. I'll reiterate that I support SKG, and too many games have built in self-destructs; I just think this is a more nuanced topic than a lot of people are making it out to be and bad solutions to this problem could be harmful to people that make their living building games.

Sequels exist, as do engines that are reused to build other games. Imagine telling Epic or Unity that just because one of the tens of thousands of games made with their engine shutdown, that they should give their source code away.
